Choose AutoPay if you want AT&T PREPAID to handle renewals automatically or your account qualifies for an unlimited-plan discount. Choose manual payment if you prefer to submit every renewal yourself and can reliably pay by the due date. AT&T advertises savings of up to $15 per month on unlimited plans, but that is not a guaranteed discount for every plan or account.
How AutoPay and manual payment differ
| Factor | AutoPay | Manual payment |
|---|---|---|
| When payment happens | AT&T processes payment one day before a monthly plan’s due date, or one day before a non-monthly plan’s balance expires. | You submit payment when it is due to keep service active. |
| Effort and control | Renewals are handled automatically using an enrolled payment method. | You initiate each payment, giving you direct control over when to submit it, but you must remember the deadline. |
| Potential unlimited-plan savings | AT&T says eligible unlimited-plan customers can get up to $15 off per month. The amount and eligibility depend on current plan and account terms. | The cited AT&T guidance does not establish that manual payments receive the AutoPay discount. |
| Risk if you miss payment | Automatic processing can reduce the chance of forgetting a renewal, but the payment method must be available for the charge. | AT&T says service can be turned off if you do not pay when due. An unpaid number may be reassigned after 60 days. |
These timing, discount, and service statements come from AT&T’s PREPAID support page, last updated March 18, 2026: AT&T PREPAID AutoPay support.

When AutoPay is the better choice
- You do not want to track a monthly due date or non-monthly balance-expiration date.
- You have an unlimited plan and your account confirms an AutoPay discount that makes the arrangement worthwhile.
- You are comfortable with AT&T processing the charge before the renewal date, including payment for the plan, auto-renewing add-ons, taxes, and fees.
AT&T describes the savings as “up to $15 off per month” for an unlimited plan. Treat “up to” as a maximum, not a promise: check your plan and account’s current terms before estimating your bill. The support guidance does not identify the exact discount for every currently offered PREPAID plan.

When manual payment is the better choice
- You want to decide whether and when to submit each renewal rather than have a stored payment method charged automatically.
- You can reliably pay by the due date or balance-expiration date.
- You prefer not to enroll a payment method for automatic charges.
Manual payment takes more attention: AT&T says you need to pay when due to keep service. If you miss the payment, service may be turned off; AT&T also says an unpaid number may be reassigned after 60 days. See the AT&T PREPAID AutoPay support page for its current service guidance.

How to make the choice for your account
- Check your plan and account for the actual AutoPay discount, if any. Do not assume you will receive the maximum advertised amount.
- Confirm your preferred payment method is accepted in the channel you will use.
- Consider whether an automatic charge one day before renewal suits your budget and preferences.
- If you choose manual payment, set a reminder early enough to pay by the due date or balance-expiration date.
