Atmospheric Water Generator vs. Dehumidifier: Which Makes More Water per kWh?

There is no universal winner between an atmospheric water generator and a dehumidifier. Compare L/kWh under matched temperature, humidity and dew-point conditions—and treat water quality separately from yield.

There is no universal winner: water output per kilowatt-hour depends on the air and the device. Many atmospheric water generators (AWGs) use the same basic refrigeration-and-condensation process as a household dehumidifier, but their yields cannot be compared fairly without matching temperature, relative humidity and dew point. A year-long field study in Tempe, Arizona, found a compressor dehumidifier collected more than twice as much water as a desiccant system in warmer, more humid conditions; the result reversed in cooler, drier conditions. It was not a controlled comparison of a household AWG with a household dehumidifier.

What does “more water for the energy used” mean?

Use either liters per kilowatt-hour (L/kWh), where more is better, or kilowatt-hours per liter (kWh/L), where less is better. These are inverse measures: 1 kWh/L corresponds to 1 L/kWh. A meaningful figure must describe the conditions under which the water was collected, particularly air temperature, relative humidity (RH) and, where available, dew point.

A rated daily output is not an efficiency comparison by itself. Ratings measured at different temperatures and humidities describe different workloads; a device can collect more water simply because the air contains more moisture. EPA says AWG production is highly dependent on air humidity and temperature. The agency’s 2019 life-cycle report includes modeled output by vendor, scale, humidity and temperature range, but those vendor inputs are not guarantees for current retail devices: EPA life-cycle and cost assessments.

How the two devices collect water

Refrigeration-based AWGs and compressor dehumidifiers

Many AWGs cool air below its dew point so water vapor condenses on a coil. Household compressor dehumidifiers use the same basic principle. EPA describes common AWGs as using condenser and cooling-coil technology like a household dehumidifier. The categories still differ in purpose: an AWG is built to collect and condition water, while an ordinary dehumidifier is built to control indoor humidity. An AWG may add filtration, disinfection and mineralization that an ordinary dehumidifier does not provide.

Atmospheric Water Generator/Pure AirWater A10/Make Water from Air
  • ✅ [Revolution] - Game-changing revolution in drinking water industry! Brings you the purest water by extracting moisture from the air and purifying the water with built-in air and water filtration system. No plumbing or piped water is needed. Just plug into a power outlet! No installation is needed.
  • ✅ [Purifying] - With built-in air and water filtration system such as PAC treatment, Ultrafiltration, carbon block filter system, and UVC-LED sterilization system, etc., it produces drinking water that tastes fresh, pure, and soft.
  • ✅ [Production Volume] - The produced water volume depends on the level of humidity in the air and the ambient temperature. Work best in areas with relative humidity levels ABOVE 40% and environmental temperature ABOVE 59°F (15°C). The maximum production volume is 2.64 Gallon (10L) each day (with the temperature of 86°F and humidity of 80%).
  • ✅ [Healthy] - Free from contaminants like heavy metal, pesticides, and other impurities found in ground or surface water. Say goodbye to chlorine and chemicals from urban water supply system. The water tank is made of Food-grade PP (Polypropylene). Say goodbye to plastic bottles and reduce your carbon footprint. Help reduce the humidity level in the room.
  • ✅ [Easy and Convenient] - Can also be connected to solar pannels (paired with a power station or battery bank), makes it a perfect water source for homes, RVs, trailers, boats, off-grid or emergencies during natural disasters.

Desiccant systems

A desiccant system captures moisture in a material that attracts water vapor, then releases that moisture for collection. It is not the same collection technology as a compressor unit, so a comparison needs to identify which type of dehumidifier is involved. The field evidence below shows why “dehumidifier” alone is not a sufficient description of the technology.

What the available performance figures show

A conditional compressor-versus-desiccant result

A year-long outdoor study in semi-arid Tempe, Arizona, compared electric-powered compressor and desiccant dehumidifiers. When average run-cycle RH was above 30%, temperature above 20 °C and dew point above 5 °C, the compressor system harvested more than twice as much water. Under the study’s cooler, drier thresholds—average RH below 30%, temperature below 20 °C and dew point below 5 °C—the desiccant system performed more favorably. These are conditional findings from one deployment, not universal cutoffs or a direct test of a named AWG against a household dehumidifier. See the study record indexed by PubMed.

A single AWG energy figure

A 2022 study of an AWG under hot, humid climate conditions reported annual-average energy use of 2.25 kWh/L for its tested device and setup. That is a device- and study-specific result, not a category-wide efficiency rating. The study also reports substantial variation with operating conditions: performance analysis of an AWG under hot and humid conditions.

Why modeled production is not a product guarantee

A 2023 PLOS Water paper modeled production for three AWGs using U.S. historical weather data from 1985–2019. The authors found strong geographic and seasonal variation and reported minimal viability over a large portion of the country under their model and device assumptions. Individual testing of each device was outside the empirical study, so its results are not a same-condition efficiency test or a promise of current product output: the U.S. AWG production benchmarks.

How to compare actual products

  1. Match the conditions. Look for energy and water measurements taken at comparable air temperature, RH and dew point. If a manufacturer omits those conditions, its figure cannot support a like-for-like efficiency comparison.
  2. Compare measured ratios. Prefer L/kWh or kWh/L over daily output alone. Check that the energy figure and water yield refer to the same operating period and conditions.
  3. Check the technology. Identify whether each device uses compressor refrigeration or desiccant capture. Do not assume a result for one type applies to the other.
  4. Look beyond a peak rating. Daily and seasonal results can differ as local weather changes. Modeled output and laboratory or field results are useful only within their stated device and conditions.
  5. Separate collection from drinking-water treatment. Compare the reservoir, materials, filtration, disinfection, maintenance requirements and evidence supporting any claim that the output is potable.
  6. Choose for the job. If the goal is humidity control, compare dehumidifiers on that task. If the goal is drinking water, consider only a system designed for water collection and treatment, with relevant water-quality evidence.

The available studies do not establish one controlled, same-conditions comparison of a named household AWG against a named household dehumidifier. For that reason, they cannot identify a universal best device or settle how much water a particular unit will make per kWh in a reader’s home.

Collected water is a separate question from efficiency

More collected water does not automatically mean safer drinking water. EPA’s three-month evaluation of a commercial Watergen GEN-350 examined untreated condensate and produced water. Opportunistic pathogens were not detected in weekly samples, but high heterotrophic plate counts were found in treated water. The report also notes that airborne contaminants can dissolve in condensate and that microbial growth may occur in plumbing and stored water. Those findings concern the evaluated unit and do not certify other AWGs or make ordinary dehumidifier condensate potable. Read the EPA microbial water-quality evaluation.

The Tempe field study also found differences in collected-water quality before filtration: compressor-collected water had higher measured conductivity, turbidity and some metals near or above U.S. EPA secondary drinking-water standards, while desiccant-collected water had significantly lower conductivity, metals and turbidity. These measurements describe the study’s collected water before post-treatment; they do not establish whether a particular device’s final treated water is safe or unsafe.
