The two Hellblade games are the clearest picks if you want sound to feel intimate and spatial rather than simply loud. Xbox Wire’s 2024 interview with the Hellblade II audio team explains binaural audio as a recording approach that uses two microphones to create a three-dimensional soundscape similar to hearing with one’s own ears. SOMA makes the environment itself unsettling
SOMA is a strong choice if you want a setting that feels physically present. It takes place in PATHOS-II, an underwater facility, and developer Frictional Games describes its approach as a physically simulated world with a dynamic sound system intended to support immersion. Alien: Isolation turns sensory clues into stealth decisions
In Alien: Isolation, sound is not only atmosphere; it can affect how you play. PC Gamer’s guide describes the motion tracker as useful but risky: its sound can be heard by the alien, while its green light can be seen. You gain information about what may be nearby, but using the device can expose you. The tension of hearing the creature in the vents adds another layer of uncertainty.
