Atlassian Data Center vs. Cloud: Security, Control, and Maintenance Compared

Data Center offers customer control of infrastructure with customer-run operations; Atlassian Cloud manages platform maintenance. Compare security responsibilities, administration differences, and the affected-product timeline.

Atlassian Data Center gives your organization more control over the infrastructure and more operational responsibility; Atlassian Cloud handles platform maintenance and upgrades, while leaving customers responsible for their own configuration, access governance, and plan choices. Neither deployment model is categorically more secure or cheaper. The right fit depends on your security and compliance requirements, operating capacity, administration needs, and the product’s lifecycle horizon.

What is different about Data Center and Cloud?

Data Center is self-managed: you choose where it runs and how it is operated. Cloud is managed by Atlassian for platform maintenance and upgrades, but it is not a hands-off security or governance arrangement. In both models, customers must make decisions about access, configuration, and how the service fits their organization.

Area Data Center Cloud
Infrastructure Runs on customer-selected infrastructure; deployments may use a single node or a cluster. Atlassian’s shared-responsibility guidance describes customer-run environments. Atlassian operates the platform and performs required maintenance and upgrades during scheduled maintenance windows, according to Atlassian’s migration comparison.
Patching and upgrades Your team is responsible for applying security fixes and managing product maintenance. Atlassian performs platform maintenance and upgrades. Premium and Enterprise customers can select release tracks; qualifying sandboxes receive changes before production.
Backups Your team is responsible for maintaining backups as part of operating the deployment. Atlassian automates disaster-recovery backups. Creating site backups for your own needs remains a manual task.
Availability approach A single-node setup is simpler but has a single point of failure. A cluster uses multiple application nodes and specialized components such as a load balancer to support high-availability needs. The cited comparison describes Atlassian-managed platform operations; it does not establish a like-for-like availability outcome against a particular customer’s Data Center design.
Identity and administration Customer teams configure and operate identity and access controls for their environment. Cloud SSO requires Enterprise or Atlassian Guard Standard, according to Atlassian’s administration comparison. Check the entitlement for the specific product and plan.

How do security and control compare?

Data Center: more direct infrastructure control, more duties

Data Center can suit organizations that need to select and operate their infrastructure, including running it on a private network. That control comes with work: Atlassian’s shared-responsibility guidance assigns customers tasks such as promptly applying security fixes, configuring network protections, managing access, maintaining backups, and conducting audits. Its examples include WAF or VPN protections and MFA or SSO, alongside encryption and access controls.

These are responsibilities, not proof that Data Center is inherently more secure. The security result depends on the organization’s threat model and how well its environment is configured and maintained.

Cloud: Atlassian operates the platform, customers govern their use

Atlassian’s maintenance and upgrade work reduces the need for customers to operate the underlying platform, but customers still need to govern identities, permissions, configuration, and their own backup requirements. Release tracks and sandboxes are available to Premium and Enterprise customers; verify the options for your plan before relying on them for change management.

Compare each model against your actual compliance obligations and operating capability. A requirement for infrastructure control, by itself, does not establish that a self-managed deployment will meet a particular compliance need; likewise, vendor operation does not remove customer governance responsibilities.

What can change for administrators during a Cloud move?

Migration can affect authentication, apps, workflows, and resources that have ownership or cross-project behavior. Atlassian’s administration comparison documents plan-dependent SSO, restrictions on workflow XML imports, and differences involving ownership of cross-project boards and filters. A feature’s presence in Cloud does not guarantee that a specific Data Center configuration or operating process will transfer unchanged.

Audit before choosing a target

  • Authentication and identity requirements, including SSO entitlement and how users are managed.
  • Marketplace apps and whether their Cloud versions support the functions your teams rely on.
  • Custom workflows, including any workflow XML imports or behavior that depends on them.
  • Cross-project boards and filters, their owners, and the teams that depend on them.
  • Backup procedures, release-control needs, and operational processes tied to the current Data Center environment.

Confirm behavior and entitlements for each product and plan with Atlassian’s current documentation before setting a migration scope.

What does the Data Center lifecycle mean for planning?

Atlassian’s announced phase-down applies to affected Data Center products, not every product bearing the Data Center name. The policy page excludes Bitbucket and Bamboo Data Center from the announced end of life and gives Jira Align Data Center a separate status. For affected products, the published dates are:

  • March 30, 2026: The phase-down began. New customers can no longer purchase new subscriptions for affected Data Center products or new Marketplace Data Center apps.
  • March 30, 2028: Existing customers may purchase new subscriptions, Marketplace apps, and expansions for affected products through this date.
  • March 28, 2029: Affected products reach end of life; subscriptions and associated Marketplace apps expire and become read-only.

Atlassian says, “You will have three years from this date to prepare, test, and migrate from Data Center to Atlassian’s cloud platform.” Treat that as the published migration window for the affected products, not as a guarantee of a particular migration path or of extended maintenance. Atlassian mentions exceptional extended maintenance after end of life, but it is not guaranteed to every customer.

Check the support status of each release too

The end-of-life schedule is separate from support for an individual release. Atlassian’s support policy says it supports releases for two years after the initial feature or Long Term Support (LTS) release, subject to that policy. Atlassian also states: “Atlassian does not provide support for releases that have reached their end of support (EoS) date.” Check the relevant release’s EoS date rather than assuming a product’s overall lifecycle date determines whether that release is supported.

How should an organization choose?

  • Consider Data Center when direct infrastructure control is a defined requirement and your organization can operate the deployment, security controls, backups, and maintenance. Include the affected product’s end-of-life timeline in the decision.
  • Consider Cloud when Atlassian-managed platform maintenance fits your governance model and your plan covers the required identity, release, and administration capabilities. Validate apps and configuration-dependent behavior before committing to a migration.
  • Do not decide on security or cost alone. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal security winner or a fixed cost winner. A meaningful cost comparison depends on user count, product mix, hosting footprint, Cloud plan, Marketplace apps, and migration effort; security depends on requirements and implementation.
