Choose the ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme if you prioritize a higher performance ceiling, a 1080p/120Hz screen, Windows launchers, or direct access to PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass. The better fit depends on which exact models you compare: Ally Z1 and Steam Deck LCD are entry-level options, while Ally Z1 Extreme and Steam Deck OLED are the more relevant premium comparison.

Which one has better gaming performance?
The Ally Z1 Extreme has the higher peak-performance ceiling on paper: its Zen 4 CPU and RDNA 3 graphics configuration has 12 compute units and is specified for up to 30W operation. Steam Deck uses an older Zen 2/RDNA 2 platform with eight graphics compute units. That difference makes the Ally the stronger candidate when maximizing frame rate or settings is the priority, but it is not a universal measure of what a player will see in every game.
Actual results depend on the game, power mode, resolution, settings, firmware, and software optimization. The Ally’s 1920×1080 display also asks the hardware to render more pixels than the Deck OLED’s 1280×800 panel. A comparison is most useful when both devices are tested in the same game at stated wattage and comparable resolution and settings; specifications alone cannot settle sustained performance or noise.

How do the screens differ?
Choose the Ally for resolution and refresh rate
The Ally’s 7-inch 1920×1080, 120Hz panel favors sharper output and a higher refresh-rate ceiling. That can suit games that benefit from smoother motion, provided the game and the device’s performance mode can deliver it. A 120Hz specification does not mean every demanding game will run at 120 frames per second.
Choose Steam Deck OLED for contrast and a larger panel
The Deck OLED has a slightly larger 7.4-inch display with a 1280×800 resolution. OLED technology gives it a different visual advantage: strong contrast and deep blacks. Its lower resolution is also a different workload from the Ally’s 1080p panel, so screen specifications should be considered alongside performance rather than as an isolated ranking.
Battery life: capacity is not runtime
ASUS lists a 40Wh battery for the Ally, while Valve lists a 50Wh battery for Steam Deck and estimates roughly 3–12 hours of gameplay depending on use. The figures are not directly comparable runtime guarantees: battery capacity alone does not predict hours of play, and Valve’s range varies with workload. Brightness, game demands, performance settings, and other usage conditions affect how long a charge lasts.
If extended unplugged sessions are a deciding factor, look for a test of the specific model and game at the settings you expect to use. The available manufacturer figures establish battery capacity and Valve’s broad usage-dependent estimate, not a single equivalent runtime for both devices.

SteamOS or Windows: which fits your library?
Steam Deck is the more integrated Steam handheld
Steam Deck is built around SteamOS and Valve’s handheld interface, making it a natural fit for players who primarily buy and launch games through Steam. Its console-like presentation is a central part of the experience. If minimizing Windows desktop interaction and setup is important, this integration is a meaningful advantage.
Ally supports a wider set of PC storefronts directly
The Ally runs Windows 11. ASUS lists support for Steam, EA App, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy 2.0, and Android apps in its ROG Ally launch announcement. That makes it the more straightforward choice if you want Windows launchers or Game Pass access on the handheld. Windows flexibility can also mean more desktop-style setup than a purpose-built gaming interface.
For a Steam-only library, Deck’s integrated approach is usually the simpler match. For a library spread across PC stores or a subscription that depends on Windows, Ally’s compatibility is the more important distinction.

Valve emphasizes performance, ergonomics, and battery life as design goals for Steam Deck OLED, and the SteamOS handheld interface contributes to a more console-like flow. Publicly available information does not establish comparative measurements for grip comfort, suspend/resume reliability, fan noise, or control quality between the Ally and Deck OLED, so those points cannot be responsibly ranked from the listed specifications alone.

Consider the games you play as well as the controls you prefer. For games designed around a mouse or desktop interface, either handheld may involve navigating menus differently from a conventional console. If touchpads, analog sticks, or the shape of the device are decisive, try the exact model in person where possible rather than assuming one design suits every hand.

Both devices can be expanded with microSD storage, making a card a practical way to add space for a game library. Steam Deck has a high-speed microSD slot; check the exact device’s supported card specification and the card’s capacity and UHS rating before buying. A microSD card is convenient for added storage, but it should not be treated as a substitute for checking the speed and capacity of the internal drive when choosing a configuration.
Docking and accessory needs can change the total cost of ownership. Confirm compatibility and current pricing for any dock or accessory you plan to use; the specifications here do not establish a like-for-like accessory price or a universal performance result when docked.

Match the tier before comparing prices: Ally Z1 with Steam Deck LCD is an entry-level comparison; Ally Z1 Extreme with Steam Deck OLED is the more relevant premium comparison. ASUS’s $699.99 U.S. figure for the Z1 Extreme Ally was its 2023 launch price, not a current market quote. Current prices, stock, seller condition, warranty, and country availability vary and are not established here.
- Compare the exact processor tier: Ally Z1 and Z1 Extreme are not interchangeable configurations.
- Compare the exact Deck generation: Steam Deck LCD and Steam Deck OLED differ in display and hardware details.
- Check current local listings for seller condition, warranty, and availability before judging value.
- Include storage expansion or other accessories only if you actually need them.
Which handheld should you choose?
Choose Steam Deck OLED if
- Your games are mostly in Steam and you want a cohesive handheld interface.
- You value an OLED screen and SteamOS integration more than the Ally’s higher resolution and refresh-rate ceiling.
- You want a 50Wh battery and prefer Valve’s usage-dependent estimate as a reference, while recognizing runtime varies by game and settings.
Choose ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme if
- You want the stronger peak-performance specification and are willing to tune power and graphics settings for the game.
- You want the Ally’s 1080p/120Hz display.
- You need Windows storefronts or PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass access directly on the device.
Neither spec sheet resolves the value question without current, local pricing and the exact configurations on offer. Decide first whether SteamOS simplicity or Windows compatibility is more important, then compare the matching model tiers and their current terms.
