ASUS ProArt PA40SU Is a USB4 M.2 Enclosure With Active Cooling—Not a Complete SSD

The ASUS ProArt PA40SU is an empty USB4 NVMe enclosure with a four-level fan—not a complete external SSD. Here are its compatibility requirements, performance limits and ideal use cases.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ASUS announced the ProArt PA40SU on April 21, 2026. It is an empty, reusable enclosure for a user-supplied M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD, combining a USB4 40Gbps interface with a four-level smart fan and thermal pad for sustained workloads. The SSD is not included, so capacity and practical speed depend on the drive, computer, cable and workload.

ASUS’s announcement and product page position it primarily for creators moving large video, photo, audio, 3D and backup files.

What the PA40SU actually is

An enclosure contains the USB-to-NVMe bridge, cooling system and case. You provide the internal M.2 drive. That makes the PA40SU different from a complete portable external SSD, which arrives with storage already installed and normally carries a single-unit warranty.

#1 Best Overall
ASUS ProArt PA40SU SSD Enclosure - USB4 40 Gbps, USB-C, Tool Free Installation, NVMe SSD Support, Smart Cooling, Ultraslim, Compatible with Windows 11 and macOS, 1 Year Warranty
  • USB4 technology with USB-C connector to deliver blazing-fast up to 40Gbps data transfers
  • Four-level smart cooling fan ensure consistent low-noise, high-speed performance
  • Tool-free design with push-to-open mechanism for quick SSD installation or removal
  • USB-C interface compatible with high-speed NVMe SSDs (2230/2280)
  • Exclusive ProArt SSD Dashboard offers real-time monitoring through a custom UI

Modularity lets you reuse an older NVMe drive, replace the drive later or choose your own capacity. It also means the total cost includes both the enclosure and a compatible SSD. ASUS’s compatibility FAQ says the drive must be an M-key NVMe PCIe model in 2230 or 2280 format, with support listed up to 4TB. SATA M.2 drives are not supported, and ASUS says PCIe AHCI-based M-key SSDs are unsupported.

Why the active fan matters

Fast NVMe drives can heat up during long writes. Once a drive reaches its thermal limits, it may reduce speed to protect itself. The PA40SU’s four-level smart fan and thermal pad are intended to delay or limit that throttling, rather than make a short copy instantly faster.

Workloads that can benefit

  • Editing or exporting large video projects
  • Moving multi-hundred-gigabyte media libraries
  • Creating system images and repeated backups
  • Scratch-disk use
  • Large RAW-photo or 3D datasets

ASUS claims its internal testing moved up to 2,960GB continuously in 30 minutes without throttling. That is a manufacturer test result, not an independent benchmark; ASUS does not specify every SSD, host system, ambient temperature or test setting. The listed 18.2dB(A) fan figure is likewise an ASUS specification, not an independent acoustic measurement.

USB4 performance: what 40Gbps does—and does not—mean

USB4’s advertised 40Gbps is the link rate between the enclosure and a compatible host. It is not a promise of 40Gbps of file throughput (nor a guaranteed 5GB/s sustained transfer). Results depend on:

  • The installed SSD, including its controller, NAND, cache, free space and temperature
  • The enclosure’s bridge controller and firmware
  • Whether the computer actually negotiates USB4 40Gbps
  • The USB-C cable’s data-rate rating and certification
  • File size, sequential versus random access and filesystem overhead
  • Other devices sharing the host’s USB controller

The enclosure is backward-compatible with USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0, but those connections have lower ceilings. A USB-C socket alone does not prove USB4 support, and a charging-only or slow data cable can become the bottleneck.

SSD compatibility checklist

  • Is the drive NVMe PCIe rather than SATA M.2?
  • Is its keying M-key?
  • Is it 2230 or 2280?
  • Is its capacity no greater than ASUS’s listed 4TB limit?
  • Does its power requirement fit the enclosure’s design envelope?
  • Does the host computer have a genuine USB4 data port?
  • Is the USB-C cable rated for the intended USB4 speed?

ASUS warns that drives beyond the enclosure’s capacity or power limits may not be detected or may not receive sufficient power.

Installing the drive

The tool-free cover and Q-Latch avoid screws, but handle a used SSD carefully: back up its data first and retain any encryption recovery key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Slide the rear latch and lift off the back cover.
  2. Rotate the Q-Latch into the SSD-installation position.
  3. Insert the M.2 SSD fully into the slot.
  4. Rotate the Q-Latch clockwise to secure the drive.
  5. Reattach the cover and press until it clicks.

For a 2230 drive, reposition the Q-Latch to the smaller mounting point. ASUS’s installation instructions say to rotate the latch to the correct position and push it down. Do not force the latch or cover.

After installation: operating system and filesystem

ASUS lists Windows 10, Windows 11 and macOS 14.4 or later. That is the published support range, not a guarantee that every Linux distribution or older macOS release will have identical behavior. Basic USB mass-storage support can be broader, while ASUS dashboard and support utilities may have narrower compatibility.

A new or erased drive may need initialization, partitioning and formatting before it appears. exFAT is generally the practical choice for sharing a drive between Windows and macOS; NTFS is primarily Windows-oriented without extra Mac software, while APFS is the natural macOS choice but less convenient on Windows. Reformatting destroys existing data.

Monitoring and practical limitations

The ASUS ProArt SSD Dashboard can monitor SSD status, health and performance, according to the product page. However, ASUS notes that some SSD manufacturers’ toolkits may not expose complete SMART information through a portable enclosure. Do not assume every vendor utility will work normally over USB; try the ASUS dashboard or an appropriate third-party utility instead.

Physical design and protection

The PA40SU measures 124.8 × 46.5 × 13.5mm and weighs 127g. It has a Stealth Black finish, USB-C connector, 5V DC power requirement and storage-temperature range of −40–60°C. ASUS highlights a protective sleeve with a hook attachment. Neither the product materials nor secondary coverage establish an IP water-resistance rating or formal drop certification, so the sleeve should not be treated as ruggedization.

Availability and price

Availability is regional. ITdaily reported Benelux availability from May 2026, while Pokde reported Malaysian availability by the end of June 2026 and no announced local price. A Micro Center search result showed $99.99, reduced from $119.99, with in-store-only availability at one surfaced location. That is a retailer snapshot, not a confirmed global MSRP; check the current price, currency and stock in your market.

Who should buy it?

  • Creators who already own a compatible NVMe SSD and regularly sustain large transfers
  • Users with a real USB4 40Gbps host and an appropriate cable
  • People who value replaceable storage and tool-free installation
  • Buyers who want active cooling and dashboard monitoring

Who should skip it?

  • Anyone wanting a ready-to-use external SSD with storage included
  • Owners of computers limited to USB 3.x who do not plan to upgrade
  • Users who need certified water or drop protection for field work
  • People who require completely silent operation
  • Light users transferring mostly small files, for whom a cheaper USB 3.2 enclosure is sufficient

How it compares with alternatives

Alternative When it makes more sense Main trade-off
Conventional USB 3.2 NVMe enclosure Older computers, lower-cost everyday storage Lower interface ceiling
Complete portable external SSD Plug-and-play use and one-device warranty Less modular; storage is not user-replaceable in the same way
Passive USB4 enclosure Silent operation Potentially more thermal throttling during long writes
Rugged external SSD Travel, outdoor and field production Usually less modular

ASUS’s ROG Strix AIOLOS is another enclosure with a dedicated SSD dashboard identified in ASUS support documentation, but it belongs to a gaming line. Do not infer speed, price or protection differences without checking its current model page.

Troubleshooting

The SSD is not detected

  1. Confirm it is an M-key NVMe PCIe drive, not SATA or PCIe AHCI.
  2. Verify the 2230/2280 size and supported capacity.
  3. Check Q-Latch position, full insertion and the 2230 mounting point if applicable.
  4. Use a host port that supports data and a properly rated cable.
  5. Check the drive’s power requirements.

The drive appears in firmware but not the operating system

Initialize and partition it, assign a drive letter in Windows or mount it in macOS. Formatting may be required after backing up existing data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance is lower than expected

Check USB4 negotiation, cable rating, host limitations, SSD temperature, cache exhaustion, free space, workload type and USB-controller sharing. Compare sequential and random tests rather than treating one benchmark as universal.

The fan does not change short-copy speed

That is normal. Cooling is most useful when sustained writes or repeated workloads heat the SSD enough to throttle.

Verdict

The PA40SU is most compelling as a modular USB4 enclosure for sustained creator workloads: it accepts a replaceable 2230 or 2280 NVMe drive, adds active cooling and avoids locking the buyer to a fixed capacity. Its value depends on already having—or budgeting for—a capable SSD, USB4 computer and suitable cable. Buyers seeking silent, rugged or immediately usable storage should choose a different category.
