If your ASUS laptop is slow on Windows 11, first check whether the slowdown affects the whole system or just one app, and whether it began after an update, happens at startup, or appears mainly when the laptop is hot or under load. Then use Task Manager and MyASUS to find evidence before changing settings or buying anything. Common causes include unfinished updates, startup or background apps, low storage, heat, malware, and hardware limits.
Why is your ASUS laptop running slowly?
The right fix depends on the pattern. A slow boot points you toward startup activity; sluggishness throughout the day can involve CPU, memory, disk, storage, heat, or the demands of the apps you use. ASUS also notes that hardware specifications, including processor frequency, memory capacity, and whether the laptop uses an HDD rather than an SSD, can affect performance (ASUS system-performance guidance).

- Only one app is slow: Check that app’s workload and resource use before changing Windows-wide settings.
- Startup is the main problem: Review startup apps and their impact.
- Everything slows down under load: Look for sustained CPU, memory, or disk use in Task Manager.
- It slows down when hot or fans are loud: Check ventilation and workload.
- The change began recently: Check Windows Update status and whether a restart is required.
For a useful comparison, connect the laptop to its power supply, restart if Windows requests it, and temporarily disconnect external drives, printers, dongles, memory cards, and other peripherals. If a feature update is downloading or installing, ASUS recommends waiting for it to finish before troubleshooting further.

Inspect CPU, memory, and disk activity
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, review CPU, Memory, and Disk columns. Select a column heading to sort by that resource.
- Open Performance to see whether CPU, memory, or disk activity remains high while the laptop feels slow.
- Close an app only if you recognize it and are not using it. Avoid ending unknown processes, drivers, security tools, or system services.
A brief spike can be normal, particularly during startup or an update. Look for resource use that stays high while the slowdown is happening, and identify the associated app before taking action. Microsoft recommends checking resource use as part of diagnosing poor performance (Microsoft performance guidance).

Separate startup delays from ongoing sluggishness
To review apps that launch with Windows, go to Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps. Task Manager shows each app’s startup impact. Disable only items you recognize and do not need to start automatically; leave unfamiliar entries, drivers, and security software alone. Startup apps can affect boot time as well as performance after sign-in (Microsoft startup-app instructions).
Check storage, updates, and malware
Review free space before deleting files
Open Settings > System > Storage to review the system drive and available space. You can inspect temporary files and remove only the categories you are comfortable deleting. Storage Sense can automate cleanup, but it operates on the system drive; its settings control when files in the Recycle Bin or Downloads folder are removed. Check those choices first if you keep files in either location (Microsoft Storage Sense guidance).

Check Windows Update and scan if malware is plausible
Open Settings > Windows Update and check whether an update is still downloading or installing, or whether Windows is waiting for a restart. Let active updates complete before judging performance. If you have reason to suspect malware, run a quick scan in Windows Security. Malware and background activity can consume system resources; Microsoft’s performance guidance includes both malware checks and resource monitoring (Microsoft performance guidance).
Check power and heat if performance drops under load
If the laptop performs poorly on battery or during demanding work, review Windows power settings and, when available, the model-specific performance or fan settings in MyASUS under Device Settings. Modes and menus vary by ASUS model; gaming ROG and TUF systems may use Armoury Crate instead.

If the chassis is hot, the fan is unusually loud, or vents are blocked, move the laptop to a firm, flat surface and keep its intake and exhaust openings clear. ASUS warns against using the laptop on soft surfaces such as beds, pillows, or sofas because they can obstruct airflow (ASUS overheating and fan guidance). A ventilated stand or cooling pad is an optional way to elevate the laptop, not a guaranteed performance fix. Do not open the case to clean fans unless the service documentation for your exact model supports it and you are equipped to do so.
Run ASUS diagnostics with MyASUS
Search Windows for MyASUS, open the app, and look for System Diagnosis. If the slow-system scenario is available, ASUS says it can check memory, the hard drive or SSD, disk space, application usage, and the fan (ASUS MyASUS System Diagnosis details).

MyASUS features depend on model support and installed ASUS System Control Interface components, so your menus or diagnostic options may differ. If a test reports a hardware error, contact ASUS support or a repair provider rather than buying a generic replacement part.
If Windows will not start, MyASUS in WinRE may offer diagnostics on supported systems. ASUS documents support for ASUS PCs with a Microsoft operating system and Intel 10th-generation-or-later or Ryzen 4000-series-or-later processors; the key combination and availability vary by model. When to restore, reset, or seek repair
If the slowdown started recently and Windows has a restore point from before it began, ASUS suggests considering System Restore. Use this only after simpler checks, and review what the recovery option changes.
A Windows reset is more disruptive. Back up personal files before starting, then read the recovery choices carefully so you understand what will be removed or retained. Windows’ performance and health tools can help identify issues to address before taking that step (Microsoft device performance and health guidance).
Seek ASUS support or a qualified repair provider if MyASUS reports a hardware problem, or if persistent abnormal heat or fan behavior remains after you clear obstructions and reduce workload. If diagnostics do not show a fault, check the exact laptop SKU and its service documentation before considering a hardware upgrade; compatibility and upgradeability are model-specific.
