ASUS AiMesh can extend WiFi coverage across more of your home, but it does not automatically make your internet connection faster. The speed you get depends on the link between the main router and each node, node placement, your home’s construction, your client device, and the exact router models and firmware. ASUS’s own guidance puts it plainly: “Mesh WiFi is not really faster, but goes farther.” ASUS Canada explains the distinction as general mesh guidance, not as a speed test of a particular AiMesh setup.
Does ASUS mesh WiFi make your internet faster?
Usually, the main reason to add AiMesh is to bring a usable signal to rooms a single router does not cover well. It does not raise the speed provided by your internet plan, and a mesh node does not guarantee the same peak throughput as a device connected directly to the main router.

Mesh can improve the experience in a distant room if the alternative is a weak or unreliable connection. But in an area that already has strong WiFi, a mesh system may not improve peak speed; a single router may be the simpler choice when coverage is already adequate. ASUS characterizes mesh’s main benefit as range rather than speed in its whole-home mesh WiFi FAQ.

Do not treat the combined or advertised WiFi rate on a router’s packaging as a prediction of the internet speed you will measure on a phone or laptop. The result is constrained by the internet connection, client radio, router and node capabilities, and the wireless or wired path between them. The cited ASUS support material provides setup guidance, not independently measured model-by-model speed comparisons.

What determines speed at an AiMesh node?
Backhaul: the link between router and node
A node must communicate with the main AiMesh router, either over WiFi or Ethernet. With wireless backhaul, the node’s location and the quality of that inter-router signal matter: distance and walls can weaken it. A node placed where it receives a poor signal may extend the network name without delivering a strong connection to clients. ASUS describes AiMesh as assessing signal strength across available bands and selecting a wired or wireless path automatically in supported configurations. Its Ethernet-backhaul FAQ also describes a connection-priority option for users who want to favor the wired path.
Client devices, bands, and router capabilities
Your phone, computer, or TV must support the WiFi features and bands it is meant to use. The performance of the whole connection is limited by the weakest relevant link, whether that is a client, node, backhaul, or router. WiFi generation labels alone do not establish the speed a particular device will achieve.

Placement and building layout
Walls, floors, and the distance between units affect wireless links. Place a node where its connection back to the main router remains usable, rather than assuming that adding more nodes will fix a weak backhaul. A node can improve coverage only where it can receive a workable connection to the rest of the mesh.

| Backhaul option | When it makes sense | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet backhaul | Use it when you can run a cable between the main router and node, especially if distance or walls make the wireless link unreliable. | It avoids relying on a wireless inter-node link. ASUS says wired backhaul can free more wireless capacity for clients in supported setups; it is not a guarantee of a particular internet speed. |
| Wireless backhaul | Use it when running Ethernet is impractical. | Results depend on the signal between the router and node, available bands, placement, and configuration. On supported systems, AiMesh can select a path automatically. |
ASUS’s web-interface example identifies the first router connected to the modem as the AiMesh router and the other units as nodes. In that example, the main router’s LAN port connects to the node’s WAN port. Connection Priority is described as Auto by default; selecting WAN first prioritizes wired backhaul. Labels and available options can vary by model and software version, so follow the instructions for your equipment. See ASUS’s wired AiMesh setup guidance.

When to enable Ethernet Backhaul Mode
Ethernet Backhaul Mode is different from simply connecting a cable: ASUS says to connect all nodes to an uplink access point by Ethernet before enabling the mode. Enabling it without the required wired connections can leave nodes without an uplink. The setting is in the web interface under AiMesh > System Settings, and ASUS says support requires firmware later than 386.xxxx. Confirm that your model supports it and check its current instructions before changing the setting. In tri-band systems, enabling wired backhaul may also make the previously dedicated 5 GHz-2 band available to end devices. ASUS explains Ethernet Backhaul Mode and connection priority.
Which wireless backhaul band should you use?
On supported tri-band ASUS systems, ASUS says the 5 GHz-2 or 6 GHz band is prioritized by default as a dedicated wireless backhaul. Keeping that band dedicated makes it available for the node-to-router link rather than client devices. This is a sensible starting point when your clients do not need to use that high-frequency band.

Sharing the band between backhaul and clients can make sense when client devices need it for demanding activities such as gaming or streaming, or when nodes use Ethernet backhaul. The trade-off is that client traffic and backhaul share bandwidth, and the dedicated backhaul priority is replaced. The available bands and behavior depend on the models and configuration. ASUS’s wireless-backhaul FAQ describes the band choices.

- Identify the main router and node. The main AiMesh router is the unit connected to the modem; the other AiMesh routers act as nodes.
- Connect the cable. ASUS’s basic example connects a LAN port on the main router to the WAN port on the node. Check the instructions for the exact models and network mode you use.
- Check the backhaul path. In the web interface, review the node’s connection priority. Auto is the default in ASUS’s documented example; choose WAN first if you want to prioritize a wired connection.
- Enable Ethernet Backhaul Mode only if its requirements are met. Connect all nodes to an uplink AP by Ethernet first, then use AiMesh > System Settings if the setting is supported by your firmware and model.
If your installation uses a switch, ASUS recommends a switch supporting 10/100/1000Tbase and Cat5e-or-better Ethernet cable. Its instructions for the described AiMesh/ZenWiFi setup also caution against connecting node ports to trunk ports. Router mode, AP mode, DHCP settings, and modem restrictions can change the right topology; consult ASUS’s instructions for your scenario and check with your ISP if its modem limits connected devices. Read ASUS’s switch-based Ethernet-backhaul setup instructions.

What to check before adding another ASUS router
ASUS says compatible ASUS routers can be combined in AiMesh to extend coverage, but that does not mean every ASUS router supports AiMesh or that mixed generations retain every feature. Before buying, verify the exact model’s AiMesh support, band configuration, Ethernet port speeds, firmware requirements, and the features you intend to use. ASUS’s mesh FAQ describes combining compatible products; check the model-specific documentation for current compatibility.
WiFi 7 and MLO compatibility
ASUS documents limitations when WiFi 7 Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is used in AiMesh. Enabling MLO on the primary router can cause compatibility problems with existing nodes. In the described scenario, a node without MLO will not broadcast 6 GHz. ASUS also says MLO backhaul is available only to the first WiFi 7 node in a multi-node AiMesh setup and supports only the same model. These are feature and compatibility constraints, not a performance ranking; confirm current firmware and exact model support before building a WiFi 7 mesh. ASUS’s AiMesh setup guidance lists the WiFi 7 and MLO notes.
