What kind of replacement can Asurion send?
Asurion says its goal is to replace a covered phone with the same make and model, but availability can affect what is supplied. A replacement may be like-kind rather than identical, and Asurion says it may differ in color, brand, model, or features. Its FAQ states: “Claims may be fulfilled with a new or refurbished replacement device.”

That describes possible claim outcomes; it does not establish which condition applies to your particular phone. The official information does not give a percentage of replacements that are refurbished, so there is no supported rate to use when guessing.
Can the phone or its packaging tell you?
Cosmetic wear, startup behavior, or the package it arrived in may prompt questions, but these are not definitive tests of whether a device was refurbished. Asurion’s public information does not establish a universal refurbished label, packaging convention, or device-lookup method that proves a particular replacement’s history. Do not treat a like-new appearance—or visible wear—as confirmation either way.

How to verify the status of your specific replacement
- Review your claim documents. Check the replacement or fulfillment paperwork and any plan-specific terms for a description of the device supplied.
- Contact the claim provider or plan administrator. Use the contact information associated with your claim and ask whether the replacement issued for that claim was new or refurbished.
- Have your claim details ready. Share the information needed to identify the claim and the replacement phone. Ask for confirmation tied to that specific device rather than a general explanation of the replacement policy.
Plan terms and claim arrangements can vary, so the administrator for your coverage is the appropriate source to clarify what applied in your case.
What Asurion’s certification checks do—and don’t—show
Asurion describes certified replacements as having a smooth startup and update process, limited cosmetic wear, a working battery and ports, warranty documentation, and successful activation. These are practical checks for the condition and usability of a replacement. They do not, on their own, establish whether your phone was refurbished or new.

If you have not completed the claim yet
Before accepting an offered replacement, compare its make and model, key features, and the terms that apply to your plan. Ask the claim provider what device is available and whether its condition is specified. Do not assume you are entitled to a particular model or a new device unless the governing terms or the provider confirm it. Asurion also cautions that accessory compatibility is not guaranteed.
