Space travel can make it harder for astronauts to sleep at a biologically well-timed hour, and can reduce sleep duration and quality. The body clock does not simply reset in orbit: astronauts must follow mission schedules while living in an environment with unusual light cues. On the International Space Station (ISS), the crew sees 16 sunrises each day as the station orbits Earth about every 90 minutes.
Why space can disrupt the sleep cycle
The circadian rhythm is the body’s internal timing system, which helps regulate when a person feels alert and when they feel ready to sleep. On Earth, daylight and darkness are important cues for that system. In orbit, the ISS passes through day and night repeatedly during a single Earth day, so the view outside does not provide a simple, stable light-dark pattern.

Mission schedules add another challenge. Work, training, and critical operations can require crew members to sleep or wake at times that do not match their body clock. NASA identifies irregular schedules, sleep-pattern disruption, and circadian desynchronization as risks to performance and health. The problem is therefore not just sleeping in a spacecraft; it is getting sleep at a time and in conditions that support the body’s rhythms.
How much do astronauts sleep in space?
There is no single current average that applies to every astronaut or mission. In a 2001 study of five astronauts on two Space Shuttle flights, sleep averaged about 6.5 hours per day. The researchers assessed sleep using questionnaires and actigraphy, and reported scheduled rest-activity cycles 20 to 35 minutes shorter than 24 hours. These results describe a small Shuttle sample, not all astronauts today. NASA Technical Reports Server: study abstract

NASA’s later ISS summary says astronauts slept significantly less during flight than in the first week after returning to Earth. In NASA’s 2023 summary of the Sleep-Long research, about one in five sleep episodes aboard the station was circadian-misaligned. During those episodes, astronauts slept nearly an hour less and reported poorer sleep quality. That finding concerns the episodes examined in that ISS research, not a universal fraction for every crew or mission. NASA: Spaceflight research
What sleep disruption can mean for performance
In the five-astronaut Shuttle study, researchers observed neurobehavioral performance decrements and diminished subjective sleep quality. They also found reduced amplitude in the body-temperature rhythm and urinary cortisol timing that appeared misaligned with the imposed sleep-wake schedule. Polysomnography showed more wakefulness and less slow-wave sleep in the final third of sleep episodes; after return to Earth, REM sleep was markedly increased. The study’s small sample and two-mission setting limit how broadly those observations can be applied. NASA Technical Reports Server: Shuttle sleep study

NASA’s 2023 station summary also reports that sleep sessions of six hours or less were associated with slower psychomotor speed, higher stress, and greater tiredness. These are reported associations, rather than proof that short sleep alone caused each outcome. NASA frames sleep loss, circadian desynchronization, and work overload together as risks for performance decrements and adverse health outcomes. NASA: Spaceflight research
What makes sleeping in a spacecraft difficult?
- Unusual light cues: The frequent sunrise-sunset cycle in orbit does not provide the same stable daily light-dark signal people experience on Earth.
- Work schedules: Operational demands can shift sleep timing, including around critical activities.
- Sleep environment: NASA considers lighting, temperature, airflow, noise, carbon dioxide, private sleeping quarters, and restraints as factors that can affect rest.
- Individual variation: NASA’s sleep guidance accounts for personal habits as well as circadian timing, so a schedule or environment may not affect every crew member in the same way.
How NASA works to protect astronaut sleep
Sleep schedules and preparation
NASA describes setting sleep and wake times before launch and during flight, with schedules that account for circadian timing and individual habits. Sleep education and preparation can include information about lighting, diet, exercise, and sleep aids. The aim is to protect a reliable opportunity for sleep within the demands of the mission.

Private quarters and environmental controls
Designated crew quarters give astronauts a private place to sleep. NASA’s sleep guidance also considers temperature, airflow, noise, carbon dioxide, and sleeping restraints, all of which can shape the conditions in which crew members try to rest.
Adjustable lighting
NASA describes Solid-State Light Assemblies on the station that can be adjusted in spectrum and intensity, with settings intended to support alertness, circadian resetting, or sleep. NASA TechPort also describes a dynamic-lighting project addressing circadian misalignment and sleep. Those descriptions establish the intended purpose of the systems and project, not a guaranteed result for every astronaut. NASA TechPort

Separately, NASA reports that the European Space Agency’s Circadian Light investigation tests automated, gradual changes in LED spectrum and day-to-day variation to study effects on circadian rhythm, sleep, stress, and well-being. This is an investigation of potential effects, not evidence by itself that the lighting program has already improved sleep. NASA: International Space Station research explorer

NASA describes sleep education and cognitive behavioral techniques among possible approaches, and says melatonin or caffeine may be considered under flight-surgeon oversight. Medication is ground-tested for each astronaut before flight. In the 2001 Shuttle study, alternate-night administration of 0.3 mg melatonin did not improve sleep. That result does not establish that melatonin is ineffective in every setting, but it does not support presenting it as a proven universal fix. NASA Technical Reports Server: Shuttle sleep study

What the evidence does—and does not—show
Studies and agency summaries show that sleep disruption and circadian misalignment have been observed in spaceflight, and that shorter or poorly timed sleep can coincide with reduced alertness and greater tiredness. However, the figures come from different settings: a small Shuttle study and later ISS research. They should not be combined as though they describe the same group of astronauts.
NASA and ESA describe lighting approaches that are used operationally or being investigated, but the cited project descriptions do not establish a single lighting intervention as a guaranteed remedy. NASA’s broader guidance instead points to a combination of scheduling, preparation, sleep environment, adjustable lighting, and individually supervised behavioral or medical approaches.
