There is no verified Astra-specific YouTube Live bitrate preset in the official Astra material reviewed. Choose settings from YouTube’s recommendations for your ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate, and make sure your internet connection can sustain them. “Astra” can mean Topaz Labs Astra or Cesbo Astra; neither should be treated as a replacement for YouTube’s encoder guidance.
What “Astra” means for YouTube Live settings
Topaz Labs Astra is documented as a cloud video-enhancement and rendering workflow: upload a video, choose a model and output options, render, then download the result. Its documentation describes output up to 4K and frame interpolation from 24 to 120 FPS depending on requirements, not a live YouTube encoder configuration. See Topaz Labs’ Astra quick-start guide.

Cesbo Astra is a different product: its overview describes channels or media flows that receive content from sources, process it, and deliver it to clients, with configurable inputs and optional outputs. That overview does not establish YouTube Live bitrate presets. See Cesbo Astra’s overview. If either product is part of your streaming path, set the YouTube ingest output according to YouTube’s requirements and the capabilities of the encoder or output stage you actually use.

Choose a YouTube Live bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate
YouTube’s current English-language guide provides recommended ingest bitrates by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026, not independent test results. They are not one-size-fits-all guarantees: choose a mode your encoder supports and your stable upload connection can sustain.

| Ingest resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, the YouTube 2026 guidance recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p/60 H.264, compared with 12 Mbps for 1080p/60 AV1 or H.265. At 1080p/30, it recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Use the row matching the encoder’s actual output codec—not merely the codec of a source recording.
Balance quality against upload capacity
Check upload speed and stability, then leave headroom rather than setting video bitrate at the connection’s entire measured upload capacity. Other traffic, Wi-Fi variation, and network congestion can reduce what is reliably available. If the connection cannot sustain the target, reduce resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation. YouTube advises selecting a quality level that remains reliable on the available connection.

Set resolution and frame rate in YouTube Live Control Room
By default, YouTube detects the incoming resolution and frame rate. If you need to constrain them manually, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. The exact controls in the encoder that sends the stream depend on the software or device you use.

- Choose the output mode in your encoder. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to a matching row in YouTube’s table. Keep the output within the encoder’s supported modes and your connection’s reliable capacity.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and configure the encoder’s ingest using the stream URL and key shown for that stream. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel.
- For manual resolution selection, create a custom stream key. In the stream-key settings, enable manual settings under Stream Resolution, then select the intended mode and match it in your encoder. Otherwise, YouTube’s default detection can determine the incoming resolution and frame rate.
- Start an unlisted or private test and check stream health. Confirm YouTube is receiving the expected video and audio before making the event public.
YouTube’s API documentation treats variable resolution and variable frame rate as automatic-detection values and specifies that they must be used together. Avoid mixing an automatic value for one with a fixed value for the other when configuring through an API.

Test before going public
Test with representative motion and audio—not just a static desktop or silent opening screen—because a real event can stress the encoder and connection differently. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Watch the Live Control Room’s stream health while the test runs and verify that audio is present, motion is smooth, and the selected settings are being received.

Troubleshoot YouTube Live ingest warnings
Google’s stream-health documentation identifies configuration and delivery conditions that can affect a stream. Use the warning shown in Live Control Room to guide the fix rather than changing several unrelated settings at once.
| Warning or symptom | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bitrate too high | The encoder is sending above YouTube’s recommended level for the selected codec and mode, or above what the connection can sustain. | Confirm the codec, resolution, and frame rate; match their YouTube table row and check stable upload capacity. Lower the mode if necessary. |
| Bitrate too low | The configured bitrate is below the recommended range for the chosen mode. | Check encoder rate control and output bitrate against YouTube’s matching recommendation, while ensuring the network can sustain the increase. |
| Keyframe interval over 4 seconds | The encoder’s keyframe interval exceeds YouTube’s stated maximum. | Set the interval to 2 seconds and ensure it does not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Unsupported codec or resolution | The encoder is sending a format YouTube does not accept for the selected ingest. | Verify the codec and resolution in the encoder, then use a supported mode from YouTube’s current guide. |
| Video ingestion starvation or buffering | YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming; viewers may experience buffering. | Check connection stability, upload headroom, encoder load, and stream-health details. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection cannot deliver consistently. |
Google describes starvation as: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” A speed test is useful, but it cannot guarantee a stable connection throughout an event; run a representative test on the same network and equipment you plan to use.
