The release also introduces first-party Java and Rust hosting integrations, but both packages are prerelease. Standalone dashboard persistence works differently, so its launch mode and storage setup matter.
What persists in the Aspire dashboard
When an AppHost starts the dashboard, persistence defaults to Run. Aspire saves resource snapshots and telemetry to a versioned SQLite database, allowing you to use the run selector to switch between the live run and completed historical runs. Historical runs are read-only.

The dashboard retains up to ten runs per application and prunes the oldest as new runs start. Within those runs, the default limits are 100,000 entries per category for console log messages, structured logs, and traces. These are bounded retention limits, not unlimited archives; older entries are removed when a category exceeds its limit.
Choose persistence based on how you launch the dashboard
| Launch mode | Default and option | Storage setup |
|---|---|---|
| Dashboard started by an AppHost | Defaults to Run persistence, retaining up to ten runs per application. | Uses a versioned SQLite database in the application data directory. |
| Standalone dashboard | Defaults to temporary None persistence. To resume data after a restart, use a stable application name and select Resume. | For a containerized dashboard, mount persistent storage at ASPIRE_DASHBOARD_DATA_DIRECTORY. Keep the application name, data directory, and persistence mode consistent between restarts. |
For the Aspire persistence documentation, use the settings that match how you start the dashboard. A standalone dashboard left at None should not be expected to preserve data across restarts.

Protect persisted dashboard data
Resource snapshots and telemetry can contain sensitive values. The SQLite database has no independent encryption or authorization layer, so anyone with access to the database files may be able to read their contents. Aspire restricts the application data directory to its owner on Unix, but does not set or validate Windows ACLs.
- Restrict access to the data directory using your operating system’s permissions.
- Protect backups and copied database files to the same standard as the original.
- Do not treat dashboard persistence as a production telemetry store. Aspire describes the dashboard as a development and short-term diagnostics tool, not a production telemetry backend.
Java and Rust hosting are available as prerelease packages
Aspire 13.6 adds Aspire.Hosting.Java and Aspire.Hosting.Rust. Both are prerelease integrations, so their APIs may change. They provide language-specific ways to add applications to an Aspire AppHost, with different toolchain coverage.

Terminal and REPL workflows add interactive operations
The release adds experimental TerminalService APIs for AppHost-created terminals. A terminal can appear in a dashboard dock, an interaction dialog, or a separate window. Because these APIs are experimental, account for possible changes before depending on them.
Opt-in WithRepl() integrations open bundled clients for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, Redis, and Valkey. They work in run mode and use each resource’s actual credentials with full write access. Treat them as convenient interactive operations—not read-only diagnostic views—and take care when issuing commands that modify data.
Upgrade to Aspire 13.6
- Review the Aspire 13.6 release notes and breaking changes, especially if your project uses MongoDB, the Cosmos DB emulator, Azure Front Door, custom connection-string consumers, or experimental terminal APIs.
- Update the Aspire CLI itself by running
aspire update --self. - From your repository root, run
aspire updateto update the project’s Aspire packages. - Build and run the application, then check integrations affected by the release changes.
Changes to check include automatic TLS for local MongoDB servers when a certificate is available; the Linux-based vNext Cosmos DB emulator becoming the default; Azure Front Door origin-name changes that may require cleanup; portable connection-string environment-variable aliases for stricter deployment targets; and experimental terminal types moving namespaces. Check the release notes for the details relevant to your project before updating.
