Aspect ratio describes a video’s shape; resolution describes how many pixels make up its frame. For example, 16:9 is a widescreen shape, while 1920 × 1080 is a pixel resolution that uses that shape. YouTube supports both widescreen and other formats, so choose the frame shape for your content first, then select a resolution that suits its detail and intended viewing.
Aspect ratio and resolution mean different things
Aspect ratio: the frame’s shape
Aspect ratio compares a frame’s width with its height. A 16:9 frame is wider than it is tall; square and vertical frames have different proportions. Aspect ratio does not tell you how many pixels the video contains.

Resolution: the frame’s pixel dimensions
Resolution is usually written as width × height. For example, 1920 × 1080 is a resolution. Dividing the width by the height gives 16:9, so this is a 16:9 video. Resolution describes pixel dimensions, not the frame’s proportions by itself.
How 1080p and 16:9 differ
“1080p” refers to a resolution class, commonly 1920 × 1080. “16:9” describes the shape. They are related in that 1920 × 1080 has a 16:9 ratio, but they are not interchangeable terms. YouTube’s recommended 16:9 dimensions include several resolutions:

| Resolution | Common label | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|
| 1280 × 720 | 720p | 16:9 |
| 1920 × 1080 | 1080p | 16:9 |
| 2560 × 1440 | 1440p | 16:9 |
| 3840 × 2160 | 2160p / 4K | 16:9 |
These dimensions are YouTube recommendations, not a requirement that every video must be 16:9 or 1080p. A 1280 × 720 and a 1920 × 1080 video share the same shape but have different pixel dimensions and detail.
Which format should you choose for YouTube?
Choose the shape for the content
Start with how the video was composed and how viewers are meant to watch it. Landscape footage often fits a widescreen 16:9 frame; square or vertical footage can be published in its original shape when that suits the content. YouTube supports formats beyond 16:9 and adapts its player to the video and viewer’s device. On desktop, the player may add padding around some formats.

Choose resolution to preserve useful detail
Once you have chosen a frame shape, select pixel dimensions that retain suitable detail for the source footage and intended playback. For landscape 16:9 content, for example, 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080 preserve the same ratio at different resolutions. A larger number of pixels does not change the frame’s shape.

Do not add black bars just to fill the player
YouTube advises creators not to bake padding or black bars into a video to force it into a different frame shape. The player adapts to the video; embedded bars can interfere with that dynamic adjustment. Export the video in its intended shape instead of placing a vertical or square image inside a padded widescreen canvas solely to imitate a different aspect ratio.

Frame rate and bitrate are separate export choices
Aspect ratio and resolution are not the only export settings that affect a YouTube upload. YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the frame rate at which the content was recorded, and deinterlacing interlaced footage before upload. Its recommended SDR bitrate depends on both resolution and frame-rate class.
| 1080p SDR frame-rate class | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| Standard: 24, 25, or 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| High: 48, 50, or 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s upload recommendations for the listed 1080p SDR cases, not a promise that resolution alone determines perceived quality. Keep frame rate, bitrate, source detail, and frame shape in view when exporting.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
A practical export checklist
- Decide the intended orientation and shape. Use landscape, square, or vertical according to the footage and viewing format.
- Set pixel dimensions that match that shape. For example, 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 are both 16:9.
- Preserve the recorded frame rate. Follow YouTube’s guidance to encode and upload at the frame rate used to record.
- Use the applicable bitrate recommendation. For 1080p SDR, YouTube lists 8 Mbps for 24/25/30 fps and 12 Mbps for 48/50/60 fps.
- Deinterlace interlaced footage. YouTube recommends deinterlacing before upload.
- Leave padding out of the video. Do not add bars merely to force another aspect ratio to fill the player.
