ASP.NET Web Forms TextBox Visible=”false”: What It Does

ASP.NET Web Forms Visible="false" removes a TextBox from the rendered response. Learn when to use ReadOnly or HiddenField instead.

In ASP.NET Web Forms, Visible="false" prevents an <asp:TextBox> from being rendered into the response. The browser receives no TextBox element for that request—not an input hidden with CSS—so client-side JavaScript cannot find or read it.

Why is the TextBox missing from the page?

Visible is a server-side setting. When it is false, ASP.NET omits the control’s HTML while rendering the page. An ordinary Web Forms TextBox normally renders as an HTML input type="text"; with Visible="false", that input is not sent to the browser.

<asp:TextBox ID="SecretValue" runat="server" Visible="false" Text="server value" />

As a result, the element is absent from the page’s DOM. Browser code such as document.getElementById("SecretValue") cannot retrieve it, and the TextBox’s value is not posted by the browser as a form field. This behavior applies to ASP.NET Web Forms, not ASP.NET Core Razor syntax.

Does Visible=”false” mean display:none?

No. CSS hiding leaves an HTML element in the response and DOM, where scripts can generally access it. Web Forms Visible="false" suppresses rendering on the server. There is no TextBox markup for the browser to hide.

Choose the setting based on what the value must do

Approach HTML sent to browser JavaScript access Posts with the form Client can change value? Use it when
Visible="false" No TextBox markup No; no element is present No TextBox value is posted No browser-side value to change The control should be omitted from the response
ReadOnly="true" Yes; a visible TextBox Yes Yes; its value is sent on postback The user cannot edit it through the read-only control, but do not treat client-provided data as trusted The value should be displayed and submitted without normal editing
<asp:HiddenField> Yes; a hidden form field Yes Yes Yes; a user can inspect and modify it The value needs to round-trip through the form, and the server validates it

Keep a value visible but not editable

Use ReadOnly="true" when the user should see the value and the TextBox should remain in the page. Microsoft documents that a read-only TextBox value is sent back on postback, while the server does no processing for a read-only text box.

<asp:TextBox ID="DisplayValue" runat="server" ReadOnly="true" Text="server value" />

Read-only display is not a security boundary: data sent from a browser must not be trusted merely because the control was marked read-only.

Round-trip a value without displaying a text box

Use <asp:HiddenField> when a value must be included in the submitted form without appearing as visible text.

<asp:HiddenField ID="RoundTripValue" runat="server" Value="server value" />

A hidden field is still delivered to the browser and submitted with the form. Users can inspect or alter it, so validate any submitted value on the server; never use a hidden field to protect a secret or authorize an action.

Check the rendered page when behavior is unexpected

  • If Visible is false, look for the control in the server-side code and its rendered response, not for a CSS display:none rule.
  • If client-side code needs to access the value, the control must be rendered; choose a visible read-only TextBox or a HiddenField according to whether it should be displayed.
  • If the value must be posted back, do not rely on a TextBox whose Visible property is false; use a rendered control and validate the received value.

Microsoft’s Web Forms server-controls guide describes Visible as a server-side visibility setting: an invisible control is not sent to the browser. The Microsoft TextBox documentation also notes that text is HTML-encoded when rendered, which does not change the omission behavior when Visible is false.
