You can ask questions about data in a ClickHouse database in ordinary language by connecting an AI agent to the ClickHouse MCP server. The agent can inspect available tables, turn a question into a SQL query, run it, and explain the returned rows. This is a way to use an AI assistant as an interface to your database—not a built-in ClickHouse chatbot, and not a guarantee that the answer or query is correct.

How plain-English questions reach your ClickHouse data

The workflow uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect an AI agent with tools exposed by a ClickHouse MCP server. The server provides access to database operations; the agent uses those tools in response to your question.

  1. An MCP client connects the AI agent to the ClickHouse MCP server.
  2. The agent discovers the tools it is allowed to use, such as listing databases and tables or running a query.
  3. You ask a question in natural language. The agent may inspect the schema, construct SQL, and call a query tool.
  4. The agent presents an answer based on the rows returned by the database.

ClickHouse describes a tool called run_select_query as one that “can be used to run a SQL SELECT statement against a ClickHouse database.” The article also says the MCP server handles connection and authentication logic. See ClickHouse’s overview of building AI agents with MCP.

What you can ask

A question such as “Tell me something interesting about UK property sales” illustrates the idea: the agent can use the database’s available schema to find relevant data, query it, and summarize the result. ClickHouse’s article also gives “What’s the biggest GitHub project so far in 2025?” as an example prompt. These are examples of the interaction pattern, not evidence that every database contains the necessary data or that an agent will interpret every question correctly.

What to check before trusting an answer

The natural-language prompt is an interface to query generation. The result depends on the data, schema, generated SQL, and the agent’s interpretation of the returned rows. The cited ClickHouse article demonstrates a query workflow but does not report an accuracy benchmark or error rate.

  • For consequential analysis, inspect the SQL the agent generated and confirm that it filters, groups, and measures the data as intended.
  • Check the returned rows and definitions in the underlying tables rather than treating the assistant’s summary as the database result itself.
  • Make sure the database actually contains the data needed to answer the question; an articulate response cannot fill gaps in the source data.

Scope database access deliberately

An MCP server may expose multiple tools, and an agent should not automatically receive every operation simply because it can connect. ClickHouse’s article notes that some framework integrations let developers explicitly select allowed tools as a security feature. Limit access to the databases, tables, and operations needed for the task, and prefer read-only query access for an agent intended to answer questions. Tool discovery and controls vary by framework and configuration; MCP alone does not establish that generated SQL is correct or safe.

What this setup does—and does not—provide

This pattern lets an AI agent use ClickHouse data through tools, then communicate the query result in natural language. It does not turn ClickHouse itself into a conversational assistant, guarantee correct answers, or establish that all agent frameworks expose tools or permissions in the same way. Treat the generated query and the model’s explanation as things to verify, especially when decisions depend on the result.
