Before a coding agent breaks a request into tasks, it should resolve ambiguities that could materially change the result. The Ordewell article puts the point plainly: “The most useful part of planning happens before any task exists.” That is product-specific guidance from the article’s author, who discloses building Ordewell—not evidence that every planning system works this way.
Why a planner asks before it decomposes work
An early assumption can shape several dependent tasks. If the assumption proves wrong after those tasks have been written—or after implementation begins—changing course may require revising more than the original decision. The Ordewell article’s argument is qualitative: it gives no measurements for how often rework occurs or how much time clarification saves.
The practical test is whether different answers would lead to materially different plans or outcomes. If not, a question may add friction without improving the plan. If so, clarification is most useful before the decision spreads through task descriptions and dependencies.

Research facts the agent can inspect
A planner should investigate facts available in the project rather than ask the user to supply them. The Ordewell article names the project router, configuration location, and existing dependencies as examples. These are repository questions: inspect the codebase and its configuration, then use what is found to ground the plan.

Ask about choices that change the outcome
Some decisions are not settled by repository research. The article’s examples include the storage engine, library, scope, and API shape. When plausible answers would produce meaningfully different work, ask the person who owns the requirement rather than silently choosing on their behalf.
How to ask a useful clarification question
- Ground it in evidence. Briefly say what you found in the repository or what remains unclear, so the user can see why the question matters.
- Ask one question at a time. Include a recommendation where the evidence supports one, but make clear that it is a recommendation rather than a fact.
- Wait for the answer before choosing the next question. The answer may make another question unnecessary or change which follow-up is relevant.
The article illustrates this with a question about where plan state should be stored, paired with a recommendation based on repository evidence. That is an example of the method, not a universal default for storage location.

A request that already specifies the consequential choices may need no clarification. Asking simply because a planning workflow can ask questions is not the goal; the goal is to avoid consequential assumptions.
What to do when no user is available
In a one-shot run, there is nobody to answer. The article recommends choosing the most reasonable assumption grounded in research and recording it beside the task it affects. That makes the choice visible for review instead of burying it inside the plan. An assumption should be specific enough that a reviewer can identify what would need to change if it is wrong.

From clarification to an executable plan
Ordewell’s described sequence is to clarify first, write a prose outline, and then—after confirmation—convert that outline into structured tasks with dependencies and execution settings. The outline is an intermediate checkpoint: it gives people a chance to correct the direction before the work is divided into a more detailed structure.
The project’s official repository describes Ordewell as coding-agent task-planning and orchestration software. Its listed capabilities include researching a repository, asking about vague requirements, creating an editable task plan, handling task dependencies, and execution and verification. These are descriptions of Ordewell, not independent evidence that the workflow improves outcomes across coding agents.

The repository states that Ordewell’s software is licensed under Apache License 2.0. Its project notice distinguishes the software license from the Ordewell name, wordmark, and logos, which are not covered by that license and remain the copyright owner’s property.
