Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly told Microsoft gaming staff that the previous Game Pass strategy sent Xbox into “freefall” declines on the balance sheet. The remark comes from an internal town hall transcript reported by Windows Central—not a Microsoft-issued transcript—and does not establish that Game Pass alone caused Xbox’s broader business problems.
What Sharma reportedly said
Windows Central reported on October 6, 2026, that Sharma addressed Microsoft gaming staff at an internal town hall. The outlet said a transcript was shared with it and verified by trusted sources. It described Sharma’s “freefall” comment as referring to balance-sheet declines under the previous Game Pass strategy. The wording is reported by Windows Central; the story does not present a full verbatim sentence from a transcript published by Microsoft.

Neither Windows Central nor the Pure Xbox recap provides an independently documented financial figure for that decline. The coverage does not establish a specific loss, percentage, subscriber count, or financial calculation attributable to the strategy.

The report describes Xbox as having declined earlier in 2026 in hours spent, players, and revenue, and says Sharma described hours spent as stabilized. That context is not proof that Game Pass alone caused those difficulties, nor does “freefall” mean Xbox was bankrupt.

Windows Central’s reporter suggested the comment likely referred to damage on both sides of Call of Duty and Xbox Game Pass. That is the reporter’s interpretation, not a separately established causal finding or a confirmed explanation from Sharma.
Return to growth was about first-party games
Sharma reportedly said Xbox had “started to return to growth” and described results as “more than 2 to 3 times what we were.” Windows Central later clarified that the chart discussed those remarks in relation to first-party games Xbox owns and publishes. The figures should not be read as a company-wide revenue growth rate or evidence that every Xbox metric improved.

The same report attributes a claim of a 30% increase in positive brand sentiment over the past year to Sharma. It does not provide the underlying survey, sample, or methodology, so the figure cannot be independently assessed from the coverage.
What the reported reset could mean for Game Pass and consoles
Windows Central frames the town hall as part of a wider reset focused on reinvesting in Xbox Series X|S, and paying closer attention to fans and franchises. Sharma reportedly alluded to more flexible Game Pass choices, but the report does not establish specific new tiers, prices, or terms.

Sharma also reportedly called next-generation Xbox “Helix” a “family of devices,” while saying the console would come first and that more details would follow as plans developed. That is a description of a developing plan, not confirmed hardware specifications or a final product lineup.
Her stated ambition was “a billion daily active people.” This is a goal, not a current Xbox user count. The same reported remarks put the strategic emphasis on reaching players wherever they play and building around Xbox’s fans and franchises.

Pure Xbox also recapped the remarks, but says it drew on Windows Central’s transcript rather than an independent primary record. Read the Pure Xbox recap.

Neither page reviewed here supplies a Microsoft-issued transcript, audio, or official confirmation of the “freefall” wording. The most defensible takeaway is therefore a reported internal assessment of Xbox’s prior strategy, alongside plans for a broader reset—not a quantified public financial disclosure or proof that Game Pass was the sole cause of the business’s declines.
