There is not enough information to tell whether your Ascon implementation is correct or the first of its kind: the title does not identify the code, the algorithm variant, or the tests it passed. The benchmark for a current claim is NIST SP 800-232, the final Ascon-based lightweight cryptography standard published on August 13, 2025. A defensible assessment must name the exact function and standard version, then provide evidence of conformance.
What does “Ascon implementation” mean?
Ascon is not a single function. NIST SP 800-232 specifies four: Ascon-AEAD128, Ascon-Hash256, Ascon-XOF128, and Ascon-CXOF128. An implementation may support one or several of them, so “I implemented Ascon” does not establish which behavior should be checked.

The version matters, too. Earlier submitted Ascon designs are not necessarily compatible with the final NIST standard. The Ascon C project documents changes between the submitted design and SP 800-232, including a change in endianness and updated initial values. A project that correctly implements an earlier variant may therefore fail to conform to the final standard.

Identify the exact target
Record the implementation’s source revision, programming language, target platform, and each claimed function. State explicitly whether the target is NIST SP 800-232 or an earlier Ascon submission; the unqualified label “Ascon” is not precise enough for a conformance claim.

Check against the standard and test vectors
Use SP 800-232 as the normative specification, and compare the implementation’s outputs with the NIST-standard known-answer test (KAT) files provided by the Ascon C reference repository. Record which test files and cases were run and the result. A reference implementation is a useful cross-check, but resemblance to its code—or agreement on a few sample inputs—does not by itself demonstrate conformance.
Describe the limits of testing
Report the tested function variants, input cases and boundary conditions, test-vector source, platform, and compiler or toolchain. Distinguish functional output checks from any claimed implementation-level or security properties. Passing KATs is valuable evidence, but it does not prove that every requirement is met.
The ACVP Ascon testing document is an Internet-Draft, not a final normative standard. It says its tests do not cover the additional requirements in section 4.3 of SP 800-232. Passing those tests alone therefore cannot support an unrestricted “fully correct” claim.
Can you claim it is the first?
Not without defining “first” narrowly enough to compare like with like. For example, a claim might concern the first publicly released implementation in a named language of one specified SP 800-232 function. It should identify the scope and support the priority claim with dated, publicly verifiable evidence.
The Ascon project’s collection of implementations is a useful starting point for comparisons across software and hardware, but the collection cautions that entries may be outdated or incorrect. Inclusion in a catalog is not proof of conformance, and a catalog cannot establish that no earlier implementation exists. Avoid a broad first claim unless you can substantiate its scope and comparison.
Separate conformance from other claims
“Correct” and “best-performing” are different claims. If discussing multiple implementations, compare the targeted standard version and function, functional conformance and KAT coverage, language and platform, and any security protections such as side-channel resistance that are actually claimed and evidenced. NIST’s selection process considered third-party analysis, implementation, and benchmarking; performance results do not replace conformance evidence.

Without its repository or code, revision, claimed variants, target platform, and test results, neither correctness nor priority can be verified. The accurate conclusion is conditional: if it targets SP 800-232, meets the applicable requirements, and has documented test evidence, you can make a scoped conformance claim. Whether it is first remains a separate historical claim requiring a defined scope and dated comparisons.
