To arrange monitors in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, select Identify, then drag the numbered display tiles into the same positions as your physical screens. Select Apply and move the pointer between screens to check the result. Arrangement controls where screens sit relative to one another; it does not choose whether Windows extends or duplicates the desktop.
Arrange the display tiles to match your monitors
-
Connect and turn on the monitors, and make sure their cables are connected to the PC or dock. Microsoft also recommends checking for Windows updates before changing display settings. See Microsoft’s guide to using multiple monitors.

Choose Extend or Duplicate separately
Tile placement determines the relative position of the screens. Display mode determines what Windows shows on them. Press Windows key + P to open the projection choices:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Extend gives you one desktop spread across screens, with space to move the pointer and windows between them.
- Duplicate shows the same image on each screen.
- PC screen only uses the PC’s screen, while Second screen only uses the other screen or screens.
If you want separate desktop space on multiple monitors, choose Extend; arranging tiles alone does not change the display mode.

Identify a missing display
If Settings shows only one display even though another is connected, open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and select Detect. For an absent wireless display, use Multiple displays > Connect.
Adjust an individual screen’s scale, resolution, or orientation
Select a display tile before changing its scale, resolution, or orientation so the setting applies to the intended screen. Microsoft generally recommends the option marked Recommended for scale and resolution. Using a resolution below a display’s native resolution can make text less sharp or make the image appear small, centered, bordered, or stretched. See Microsoft’s screen resolution and layout guidance.

Troubleshoot an incorrect or unavailable multi-monitor layout
The pointer moves the wrong way
Return to Settings > System > Display and compare the numbered tiles with the physical monitor positions. Drag the tiles into the corresponding left-to-right and up-and-down arrangement, select Apply, and test the pointer path again.
Windows detects the screens, but the desktop is not extended
Press Windows key + P and select Extend. Duplicate mirrors the same image instead of creating independent desktop space.

One external screen works, but adding another does not
Check the connections and try disconnecting accessories while troubleshooting possible conflicts. If the PC still cannot use multiple external displays, its graphics adapter may not support the monitor count you want; check the specifications from the PC or graphics-adapter manufacturer. Microsoft’s external monitor troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
A splitter duplicates one video signal; it does not create two independent signals for separate extended displays. Depending on the computer, a compatible docking station or a USB adapter may provide an additional video output. Check the exact PC’s ports and supported display count before choosing hardware; compatibility depends on the system.
HDR is unavailable in a particular duplicate-display setup
Microsoft documents a laptop setup in which HDR is not supported on the external display while the screens are in Duplicate mode. For that case, its guidance is to switch to Extend these displays to view HDR content on the external HDR screen. This is a specific configuration caveat, not a general requirement to use Extend. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance.
Keep window positions when monitors disconnect
Under Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays, Windows provides preferences to remember window locations based on monitor connection and to minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected. These options can help when you regularly connect and disconnect a display.
