The U.S. Army identifies the M68 Close Combat Optic (CCO) as its standard-issue red-dot sight for the M4/M16. The M150 Rifle Combat Optic (RCO), sometimes used on the same weapon systems, is a separate 4× magnified optic—not a red dot. Available official sources describe these optics and their intended roles, but do not establish current Army-wide issue rates.
Which red-dot sight does the Army use?
The Army’s PEO Soldier equipment portfolio identifies the M68 Close Combat Optic as the standard-issue red-dot sight for the M4/M16. It is a unity-power electronic aiming device, meaning it has no magnification. The Army says it supports target acquisition while allowing a Soldier to keep both eyes open and maintain situational awareness.

The M68 product page names COMP M2 and COMP M4/M4S configurations. Its figures are Army-listed sight-only specifications, not independent measurements:

How the M68 differs from the M150 RCO
The M150 Rifle Combat Optic is a distinct optic listed for M4, M16 and M249 weapon systems. It is battery-free and provides 4× magnification. Its reticle supports range estimation and bullet-drop compensation; PEO Soldier describes accurate engagement capability from 300 to 600 meters for trained operators.
| Feature | M68 CCO | M150 RCO |
|---|---|---|
| Optic type | Electronic red-dot sight | Magnified rifle combat optic |
| Magnification | None | 4× |
| Battery dependence | Electronic sight; the cited page does not state a battery-free design | Battery-free, according to PEO Soldier |
| Listed platforms | M4/M16 | M4/M16/M249 |
| Stated role | Rapid target acquisition while maintaining situational awareness | Magnified aiming, range estimation and bullet-drop compensation |
Their overlapping platform listings do not make them interchangeable models of one red-dot sight. The Army descriptions outline intended functions, not a controlled performance comparison or proof that one optic is universally better.

What is known about Army issue rates?
A 2011 U.S. Army Infantry article reported that about 85 percent of M4 carbines in the distribution context it described were issued with a CCO; the remaining weapons were issued with the four-power M150 RCO. It also said M240 machine guns were issued with the M145 Machine Gun Optic. That is a historical snapshot, not a current Army-wide allocation rate. The cited official equipment pages do not provide a current force-wide distribution count.

That procurement milestone is not a count of current inventory or sights still in service. Separately, the FY2015 Army budget justification described an improved optic combining the M68’s close-range rapid-acquisition role with magnified capabilities associated with the M150 and M145. That historical program description alone does not establish what is fielded now or in which configuration.

Do Army M17 and M18 pistols come with red dots?
A 2020 Army article on M17/M18 training says the pistols came with tritium sights and had a removable slide plate that allowed a red-dot sight to be installed. This establishes that the platform permits an optic installation; it does not say that all M17/M18 pistols are issued with red dots.

What the Army’s optic descriptions do—and do not—establish
- The M68 CCO is the Army-identified standard-issue red dot for M4/M16 platforms in PEO Soldier’s equipment portfolio.
- The M150 RCO is a separate, battery-free 4× optic listed for M4/M16/M249 systems.
- Other weapons and roles may use other optics; the M68 is not described as the sole optic across the Army.
- Historical purchasing and distribution figures should not be read as current inventory or issue rates.
