Choose ARMSX3 if you want to emulate PS3 games on a compatible Android ARM64 device; choose RPCS3 if you want to use a supported computer platform. ARMSX3 is an Android port built from RPCS3 upstream code, not a separate emulator lineage. Neither name alone tells you whether a particular game will run well: check the exact title and current build before choosing a device or investing time in setup.
What is the difference between ARMSX3 and RPCS3?
The practical difference is where you want to run the emulator. ARMSX3 targets Android ARM64 devices, while RPCS3 is the upstream project with builds for several computer platforms. ARMSX3’s repository says it uses RPCS3 upstream code and includes ARM64 improvements; RPCS3’s project blog also documents work on ARM64. That relationship does not make the two builds interchangeable or guarantee identical compatibility on every device.

ARMSX3’s build instructions identify arm64-v8a and ARMv8.2 targets. These are build-target details, not proof that any particular phone is powerful enough or will run a given game smoothly. The available project material does not provide controlled handset benchmarks.

Which emulator should I use for my device?
Choose ARMSX3 for Android
If your goal is to use an Android ARM64 device, ARMSX3 is the Android-focused option in this comparison. Check its official repository for the current build and setup instructions. Treat device support and game performance as separate questions: matching the build target does not establish that a handset can run a specific title well.

Choose RPCS3 for a computer
If you want to use a computer, start with the official RPCS3 download page, which lists Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, and Android. Platform availability can change, so consult that page for the current builds rather than relying on older FAQ wording. The RPCS3 FAQ was edited on April 29, 2020 and lists Windows and Linux; it is useful setup documentation, but its platform list is not a current inventory.
How do I check whether my game will work?
Compatibility is title-specific. RPCS3 directs users to its official compatibility list, whose entries describe games tested with the emulator. Check the exact game and the current information before choosing a platform. Do not assume a status for RPCS3 automatically predicts how the same game behaves in ARMSX3: the ARMSX3 repository reviewed here does not publish an equivalent title-by-title list, and the projects target different builds and hardware.

The RPCS3 FAQ says some commercial titles work while others still need development. Its system-requirements section is historical, not a current specification: it says requirements were not fully known and could change substantially during development. Use current project materials and game-specific status rather than treating that 2020 statement as a device recommendation.
What do I need to set up ARMSX3 or RPCS3?
ARMSX3
- Check the Android build and setup instructions: use the ARMSX3 repository to confirm the available build and its stated requirements.
- Obtain PS3 system software: ARMSX3 requires PS3 firmware and does not include it. Follow the emulator’s setup instructions and obtain system software through Sony’s official channel.
- Check your intended game separately: do not treat the ARM64 build target as a promise of game compatibility or performance.
RPCS3
- Select the build for your platform: consult the official download page.
- Follow the project’s setup guide: the RPCS3 FAQ points new users to the quickstart guide.
- Check the game’s status: use the compatibility list for title-specific tested information.
What about controllers?
A physical controller is an optional input choice, not a prerequisite established for either emulator here. RPCS3’s FAQ documents gamepad and keyboard input and local multiplayer with up to seven controllers. That information does not verify any particular controller model—or every Android controller—with ARMSX3. If physical input matters on Android, confirm compatibility for your specific controller and ARMSX3 build before buying it.

Bottom line: which one should you use?
Use ARMSX3 when Android is the device you intend to use, and RPCS3 when you want a supported computer build. Then check the exact game’s current status and the setup requirements for that build; project lineage, platform availability, and ARM64 targeting do not by themselves establish how well a game will run.
