ARMSX2 Refresh v2.3.5 fixes a reported crash when launching PS2 games with Vulkan on Mali GPUs, while v2.3.2 added options to render below the game’s original resolution. That could help some older Pixel and MediaTek phones—but only models with Mali graphics are directly relevant, and no measured speed increase has been published.
What changed in ARMSX2 Refresh?
Android Authority reported on June 23, 2026, that ARMSX2 Refresh v2.3.5, released the previous day, fixed a crash on Mali GPUs when launching a game with Vulkan enabled. The report quoted the ARMSX2 changelog: “This should improve performance for Mali users!” That is an expectation, not a measured benchmark or a guarantee of higher frame rates. The same report says Refresh v2.3.2 introduced internal-resolution options at 0.25x, 0.5x, and 0.75x. Choosing a lower setting means the emulator renders the game at less than its original resolution. This may reduce the rendering workload on a budget phone, but it also makes the image less detailed.

Check the phone’s graphics processor, not just its brand or processor name. Many MediaTek Helio and Dimensity chips use Mali graphics, and Pixel phones with Tensor chipsets before Tensor G5 were reported to use Mali. Those devices are plausible beneficiaries of a Mali-specific Vulkan fix; that does not mean every MediaTek phone or every Pixel is covered. Android Authority’s earlier ARMSX2 coverage provides that device-family context.

If the phone uses a different GPU, or if a game crashes for another reason, this particular fix may not address the problem. The report establishes a Mali Vulkan launch-crash fix, not a remedy for every Vulkan crash. Actual results can also vary by game and device.
Which ARMSX2 release added what?
Keep the main ARMSX2 release separate from the later Refresh updates. Android Authority’s May 4, 2026, report says ARMSX2 1.0.8 improved Mali support in the main build, including graphics fixes, OpenGL behavior, and compatibility. It also lists HostFS, improved VU1 emulation, disc swapping, an FPS limit, and additional internal-resolution choices. Refresh v2.3.2 and v2.3.5 are the releases associated with the sub-native resolution options and Vulkan crash fix, respectively.

The earlier ARMSX2 build used x86-to-Arm translation, which Android Authority said could make it less performant than Arm-native alternatives such as NetherSX2. The report describes Refresh as a native release. That distinction matters when comparing builds: a graphics fix or resolution setting alone does not establish that one emulator will run every game faster.

The NetherSX2 community repository recommends Classic 3668 for Mali or less powerful devices, and Patched 4248 for more powerful devices or those with Adreno graphics. For a Mali phone, ARMSX2 Refresh is relevant if Vulkan previously caused a launch crash, while its lower internal-resolution settings offer another way to reduce rendering demands. NetherSX2’s recommended variant may also be worth considering. The best choice depends on the phone, the game, and the graphical settings you need.

Android Authority reported that the Refresh changes appeared on GitHub first and were subsequently reflected in the Play Store version. Since distribution contents can change, check the current version and release notes in the source you use rather than assuming every listing has the same build.

- Identify the GPU. Confirm whether the phone has Mali graphics; the phone brand or chipset family alone is not enough.
- Check the emulator version. Look for the Refresh build and verify that the version includes the fix or resolution settings you need.
- Test Vulkan with the affected game. If it launches, the reported Mali crash may have been addressed. A remaining crash does not prove the fix failed; the cause may differ.
- Try a lower internal resolution if performance is the issue. Compare 0.25x, 0.5x, or 0.75x with the original setting, balancing smoother play against image detail.
