Start with the built-in tutorial, tune your controls, practice a single-player scenario, and only then join a server. Arma Reforger is built around communication, map reading and deliberate movement rather than run-and-gun speed. New players get a better first session by learning the interface and radio habits before entering a heavily modified event.

Arma Reforger is available on PC and consoles. Steam’s published requirements, listed in 2023, are a practical baseline for the Windows version, but updates can change performance. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a high or stable frame rate in large battles or modded scenarios.

Leave additional free space for Workshop downloads, updates and temporary files. Xbox and PlayStation 5 editions support mods, according to Bohemia Interactive’s support information, but console storage and performance limits can differ from PC. Treat the requirements and console behavior as update-sensitive rather than permanent guarantees.

Your first session: the safest order
- Install and launch the game. Allow the initial update to finish before subscribing to Workshop content. A partially updated client can fail to load scenarios or connect to servers.
- Complete the tutorial. From the main menu choose
Play > Tutorial. Bohemia’s Getting Started page notes that you may need to scroll through the Play entries to see it. The tutorial introduces movement, weapons, interaction and the basic battlefield flow; do not skip it if this is your first military simulation. - Set controls and audio. Open
Main Menu > Settings > Controls. Bind movement, stance changes, weapon handling, map, inventory, push-to-talk and radio actions to keys or buttons you can reach without releasing movement. Adjust master, effects and voice levels so team communications remain intelligible. - Try a single-player scenario. Use a short scenario to practice reading the compass and map, moving between cover, resupplying and identifying friendly positions. This is a low-pressure place to learn the interaction prompts that are easy to miss in a live match.
- Join a suitable server. Open the Multiplayer tile and begin with an official server or a community server whose description says it welcomes beginners. Read the description before connecting; communities can impose different rules, mod requirements and communication standards.
Expect your first match to feel slower than a conventional shooter. Move with a purpose, check the map before crossing open ground and tell your squad when you are lost or need a waypoint. Arma Reforger is designed around cooperation; a short practice session is more useful than immediately joining a large, heavily modded event.
Understand the main ways to play
Steam describes single-player, co-op and multiplayer play. Bohemia Interactive presents Conflict as a core battle mode and Game Master as the tool for creating and running scenarios for other players. The Enfusion creator ecosystem and Workshop add community-made missions, assets and features.

There is no authoritative published player-count statistic in the available official material, so do not assume a server’s capacity or activity from a general number. Use the in-game listing and the community’s own description for the current situation.
How to find and join a server
- From the main menu select the Multiplayer tile.
- Review the server name, description, player activity and any visible mod indicators. Prefer an official or clearly beginner-friendly listing for your first live game.
- Read the rules before selecting Join. Look for voice-chat expectations, team-killing policies, map or faction restrictions and whether the server runs a scheduled event.
- If the listing requires Workshop content, note every required item and its dependencies before connecting. A missing dependency can stop the scenario from loading even when the main mod appears installed.
- Join and wait for the connection and content checks to finish. Do not repeatedly cancel and retry while the client is still downloading.
- Once spawned, locate your squad, open the map and identify the current objective before moving. Ask where the squad is going rather than striking out alone.
If the connection fails
- Missing or mismatched mods: leave the server, inspect the Workshop entries and install the complete dependency chain. The client and server must use the same required mod set.
- Scenario not found: confirm the download completed, restart if the mod manager is retrying, and check whether the scenario appears in the Scenarios list.
- Repeated timeouts: try an official or lightly populated server to separate a local connection problem from a particular server issue. Avoid changing several settings at once; record which server produced the error.
- Unclear rules: read the description or community information before rejoining. A technical connection does not mean the server permits unrestricted play.
Install Workshop missions and mods without creating a mess
Bohemia’s Workshop guidance describes community-created missions, assets and features. Workshop content is not automatically an official endorsement, and quality, maintenance and compatibility belong to the individual creators.

Player installation workflow
- Open the Workshop tile from the main menu.
- Find the scenario or asset and inspect its description for dependencies, supported platforms and installation notes.
- Subscribe to or download the primary item and every dependency it names. Downloading only the visible scenario is a common cause of missing-content errors.
- Wait for each download to finish. If the mod manager reports a retry, allow it to complete or restart the game before testing the scenario.
- Open the game’s Scenarios list and confirm that the downloaded scenario is visible and selectable.
- For Game Master sessions, use the Entity Browser’s modded-asset filters to verify that the expected objects are available.
- Keep a small, known-good set of mods while learning. Add new content one item at a time so a failure can be traced to a specific change.
Rules for joining modded servers
A server can require a precise collection of Workshop items and versions. Keep the server’s list separate from unrelated experiments, and remove or disable obsolete content if the client reports conflicts. If an event organizer publishes a list, preserve the exact Workshop IDs and dependency order in your notes instead of relying on memory.
When a scenario disappears after an update, first check whether the creator has published a compatible revision. Do not assume that reinstalling the same item will fix a broken dependency; the server may have changed its required set.

Host a quick game for friends
The official host guide describes a player-hosted server started through the in-game host flow. This option is intended for a private session, a quick test with friends or a mod experiment. The host’s machine and connection must remain available for the session, so it is not a substitute for a continuously running community server.
- Open the game’s in-game host flow and choose the platform and scenario appropriate for the people you are inviting.
- Set a clear server name and a password or access rule that your group understands. Put the essential rules in the server description.
- Choose the map or scenario, team settings, AI opposition and other parameters offered by the host interface.
- Start with the vanilla configuration. Confirm that friends can join, spawn and complete a basic objective before adding Workshop content.
- Add one mod or a small, documented set, then have a clean client join and test the scenario. Record the Workshop IDs and dependencies that work.
- When the session ends, save the working settings so the next host can reproduce them instead of rebuilding the configuration from memory.
Player hosting is the right choice when convenience matters more than persistence. If the host closes the game, loses connectivity or changes machines, the session is no longer reliably available.

Choose a dedicated server when availability matters
A dedicated server runs separately from a player’s game client. Bohemia’s server-hosting documentation positions it for persistent availability, scripted restarts, remote administration and a larger community. Dedicated-server tools can be used locally or through a third-party hosting arrangement, according to the support documentation.
Plan the configuration
- Scenario and world: decide which map and scenario should load first and what rotation, if any, your community expects.
- Add-ons and mods: list every Workshop ID, dependency and version. Publish the same list that the server actually loads.
- Server parameters: define the name, access rules, gameplay settings and restart behavior in the configuration supported by your server build.
- Administration: decide who can moderate players, restart the process and change the scenario. Keep those responsibilities separate from ordinary player privileges.
- Recovery: retain a rollback copy of the last known-good configuration before applying an update.
Reliable rollout sequence
- Install the dedicated-server tools for the platform you intend to run and verify that the server starts with the expected build.
- Launch a vanilla scenario first. Test a clean client connection, spawning, basic objectives and a normal shutdown.
- Add required mods one at a time, restarting and testing after each change. A mod that works in a player-hosted session can still fail under a dedicated process because of a missing dependency or unsupported server setting.
- Document the final scenario, world, add-ons, mod IDs, dependencies and server parameters in one administrator-facing file.
- Automate or schedule restarts only after a manual restart succeeds. Check that the server returns to the intended scenario and that clients can reconnect.
- Announce the exact mod list and rules to players, then test a clean client join before opening the server to a wider community.
Do not publish the administrator password in a public server description or chat channel. Restrict access to the people who need it and rotate it after staff changes.
Become an administrator and use the admin list safely
The administrator reference documents an in-game login command and admin-list settings. The command is entered with the actual password in place of the explanatory text:
#login [the admin password]The bracketed words above are a variable, not literal text to type. Use the password configured for the server, then apply the administrative actions available to your role and server build. Keep the password private; anyone who obtains it may be able to exercise the same privileges.

Admin onboarding checklist
- Confirm the server owner has intentionally placed you in the admin list or granted the relevant permission.
- Test login on a private or maintenance session before moderating a public event.
- Learn which actions are available to your current build and document them for other staff; command availability can change with updates.
- Use the least privilege needed. A moderator who only handles disruptive players does not need unrestricted configuration access.
- Record incidents, kicks, bans and configuration changes in a shared log so another administrator can understand what happened.
- Change credentials when an administrator leaves the team or when the password may have been exposed.
Admin troubleshooting and rollback
Players cannot join after a mod update
Stop advertising the server as available, compare the server’s loaded IDs with the published list and test a clean client. If the update introduced the failure, restore the last known-good configuration and mod versions, then test again before re-enabling the changed item.
The server starts but loads the wrong scenario
Check the scenario and world entries in the configuration, including spelling and the active profile. Remove experimental entries temporarily and verify the vanilla scenario. Once the intended scenario loads, reintroduce additional settings one at a time.
Players report missing objects in Game Master
Verify that the relevant add-on is loaded and that its dependencies completed on both server and client. In Game Master, check the modded-asset filters in the Entity Browser. A downloaded package that is not activated or not required by the server will not necessarily appear in the session.
Performance degrades as the event grows
Reduce unnecessary mods and AI or scripted activity, test the scenario without custom content and compare the result with the documented baseline. Do not claim a universal player limit: no authoritative player-count figure or independent benchmark is established in the available official material. Use your own controlled tests and publish the conditions if you report them to your community.
Console-specific expectations
Bohemia’s support information confirms mod support on Xbox and PlayStation 5. Console storage, download capacity and performance headroom can differ from PC, and the available control layout is different. Console players should keep extra free storage for Workshop updates, expect longer download or rebuild times after a large mod change and follow the server’s platform requirements. A mod that is technically available on console may still be too large or demanding for a particular setup.

Session one
Finish the tutorial, set controls and audio, and complete a short single-player scenario. Write down any keybind that felt awkward and fix it before the next session.
Session two
Join an official or beginner-friendly server. Stay with your squad, use the map before moving and practice concise voice reports: your location, what you see and what you intend to do.
Session three
Install one Workshop scenario and its dependencies. Confirm it appears in Scenarios, then play it privately or with friends before joining a public modded event.
Session four
Host a private game if you want to learn administration. Start vanilla, test a clean join and only then add a single mod. If you later decide to run a community, move to a dedicated server and document every working setting.
