Game Master is Arma Reforger’s live, multiplayer mission-directing mode. An authorized host or administrator opens the Game Master interface, places units, vehicles, objectives and other assets, and changes events while players respond on the ground. It is not merely a scenario editor used before a match begins: the scenario is built and managed in real time.

You can play alone, join an existing server, or host a new session. Exactly who may direct the mission depends on the server’s permissions, while platform, crossplay, filters, region and available mods affect which servers and assets you can use.

What Game Master does in multiplayer
Game Master turns one participant into a live scenario director. The official Game Master reference describes it as a real-time experience for curating events, placing assets or exploring by yourself. Bohemia Interactive’s 1.0 release material similarly explains that players can edit scenarios and manage events as they unfold, guiding others through a changing battle.
In a normal session, players receive an environment and situation, then move, fight, communicate and complete objectives. The Game Master can alter that situation while it is happening: reinforce an area, introduce a vehicle, create an objective, move a unit, or stage a new encounter. The result can be a tightly guided operation, an improvised battle or a sandbox in which the group explores the terrain.

The exact catalogue of units, vehicles, structures and objectives depends on the selected terrain, scenario, server configuration and installed mods. Game Master therefore does not guarantee that every asset seen in another session will be available on your server.
What you need before starting
Arma Reforger
To use Game Master multiplayer, you need Arma Reforger installed on a supported platform. The mode is part of the game rather than a separate application or subscription.

A compatible session
For online play, choose a server running a Game Master scenario. A server may be public, password-protected, community-operated or privately hosted. Its rules can determine whether you join as an ordinary player, receive Game Master rights, or remain in a player-only role.
Platform and mod considerations
Bohemia Interactive supports public matches as well as milsim communities. Mods are supported on Xbox and PlayStation 5, although storage capacity and performance limits can differ from PC. A server that uses mods can require you to download them before joining, and a platform or crossplay restriction can prevent a server from appearing in your browser.

How to join or host a Game Master session
The official tutorial presents three choices after you select a terrain: Play for a solo session, Find server to join a network game, or Host to create a multiplayer session. The practical multiplayer flow is:
- Open Multiplayer. Use the server browser when you want to join an existing game, or select Host when you want to create one.
- Choose the scenario and terrain. Select a Game Master scenario and a terrain offered by that server or by your host configuration. The choices shown can change with installed mods and server settings.
- Decide how you will participate. Join as a regular player, or claim the Game Master role when the server grants it to you. Do not assume that connecting to a server automatically gives you director controls.
- Load into the session. Once connected, players spawn into the mission while the authorized Game Master opens the directing interface and prepares the first event.
- Build the situation during play. The Game Master selects available assets, places them and adjusts events as the group advances. Players then act on the changing situation rather than following a completely fixed pre-game script.
How the Game Master interface works
Opening and using the Asset Browser
The official tutorial opens the Asset Browser with Tab. From there, the Game Master selects available units, vehicles, objectives and other objects, then places them into the world. Asset names, categories and placement options depend on the scenario and content enabled on that server.
Placing or moving a player unit
The same tutorial identifies Space as the placement or teleport action for a player unit, depending on the context. This lets the director put a unit into the scene or move it to a chosen location when the scenario requires it. Use such controls carefully: moving players without warning can undermine navigation, immersion or a mission’s agreed rules.
Directing rather than simply spawning
Effective Game Master play is a sequence of decisions, not a contest to place the largest number of objects. A director can introduce a threat when the group is ready, create a reason to move, reinforce a failing defense or end an encounter that has reached its purpose. The players remain responsible for tactical decisions; the Game Master shapes the circumstances in which those decisions matter.

Who is allowed to be Game Master?
Permissions are controlled by the server. Bohemia Interactive’s official Game Master reference states that the Server Host, or the player declared as Server Admin, always has access to the Game Master interface.
On a public or community server, access can depend on the scenario and the server’s permission setup. An administrator may reserve the role for staff, assign it to approved players, or configure a session in which participants can play but cannot direct events. Consequently, being connected to a Game Master server is not proof that you can open the interface.

On a community server, check its rules or ask an administrator rather than repeatedly attempting to claim the role.
Listen server or dedicated server?
Bohemia’s hosting documentation distinguishes a player-hosted listen server from a dedicated server. Both can run multiplayer, but they suit different groups.

Bohemia’s support information also confirms that hosting can be local or arranged through third-party providers. A listen server is usually the shortest path for friends who want to play immediately. A dedicated installation is more appropriate when players need a stable address, scheduled access or a service that remains available without the administrator’s game client running.
Game Master compared with Conflict and Combat Ops
Bohemia’s Boot Camp material identifies Conflict, Combat Ops and Game Master as the three primary modes. They are not interchangeable labels for the same type of match.

Choose Game Master when you want a person to react to the group and author events live. Choose Conflict when the appeal is sustained competition between sides over the islands. Choose Combat Ops when you want a solo or cooperative mission against AI without a human director continuously editing the battlefield.

Open the server browser from Multiplayer and use its filters before concluding that no suitable Game Master session exists. Bohemia’s support guidance notes that visibility can differ because of:

- platform restrictions;
- ping or latency limits;
- region settings;
- crossplay configuration;
- the server’s password, capacity or current online state; and
- required mods or other server-specific content.
For example, a console player may not see a PC-focused server if crossplay is disabled, while a low-ping filter can hide a server hosted farther away. Clear or widen filters one at a time, then refresh the list. If a community advertises a server outside the browser, verify its platform, crossplay policy and mod requirements before trying to connect.

Before players deploy
- Confirm whether the session is private, public or community-run.
- State who has Game Master authority and whether players may request changes.
- Check the terrain, scenario and mod set so the available assets match the intended mission.
- Explain the broad objective without revealing every event the director may introduce.
While the mission is running
- Use the Asset Browser to add assets with a purpose: an objective, a reinforcement, a new route or a consequence of player actions.
- Leave players enough time to understand and react to each change.
- Keep the scale appropriate to the group and the server’s performance.
- Communicate major changes when surprise would otherwise look like a technical error.
When the session ends
End the scenario when its objective has been achieved, the group has reached a clear stopping point or the server’s agreed schedule is over. If the session will continue later, record the terrain, scenario, mods and hosting arrangement so players can find the same type of game again.
Troubleshooting common multiplayer problems
The server is not listed
Clear browser filters, check region and ping settings, confirm crossplay compatibility, and verify that the server is online. A mod requirement or platform restriction can also remove it from your results.
You joined but cannot open Game Master
This is normally a permissions issue rather than a missing keybind. Ask the Server Host or declared Server Admin whether the scenario grants you access. Public servers may intentionally limit the interface to staff or approved directors.
Friends cannot connect to a hosted session
Confirm that the host started the session through Multiplayer > Host > Host new server, that the session is discoverable under its chosen visibility settings, and that all players meet the same platform, crossplay and mod requirements. If the host closes the game, a listen server tied to that client also ends; a dedicated server avoids that dependency.

Tutorial examples are tied to their scenario and terrain. Check that you selected the same type of session and that no mod or server configuration changed the available content. The tutorial’s documented controls are Tab for the Asset Browser and Space for placing or teleporting a player unit in the relevant context.
The practical answer
Game Master multiplayer works by separating the people who experience the mission from the authorized player who shapes it. Start through Find server or Host, load a Game Master scenario, obtain host or administrator permission, and use the Asset Browser to create and adjust events while others play. A listen server is quickest for a small private group; a dedicated server is better for a persistent community service. If you instead want fixed competitive warfare or cooperative AI missions, Conflict and Combat Ops provide those different structures.
