Its recommended baseline is a 3.5 GHz quad-core processor with 4 GB of RAM. Those figures are not a promise that every mission, player count or mod collection will run well. Arma 3 server performance is usually constrained by simulation work—especially AI and mission scripts—so CPU behavior, RAM headroom, network quality and workload matter more than a simple parts list.

Bohemia Interactive’s Dedicated Server documentation gives two reference points:
| Specification level | CPU | Memory | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 2.4 GHz dual-core | 2 GB RAM | An entry-level baseline for running the dedicated server software, not a guaranteed player or mission capacity. |
| Recommended | 3.5 GHz quad-core | 4 GB RAM | A stronger baseline for a typical installation, still not a workload guarantee. |
The figures come from Bohemia Interactive Community’s Dedicated Server documentation. The available publication result does not establish a page revision date, so treat them as the official published baseline rather than a promise about every current hardware platform or game build.

Neither document provides a universal formula such as “X GB per player” or “Y GB for every 100 mods.” Mission scripts, AI counts, terrain, connected users, modifications, logging and other services running on the machine can change demand substantially. A server that meets the recommended line can still run poorly with a script-heavy operation, while a lightly populated cooperative mission may work acceptably on less capable hardware.
How much RAM does an Arma 3 server need?
For a dedicated server installation, start with the official 2 GB minimum and 4 GB recommended figures. Think of these as memory available to the server process under a modest workload, not as a capacity guarantee. The documentation does not establish a player-count, mod-count or mission-type RAM chart, so assigning a fixed amount per player would be guesswork.

At the minimum, the operating system, file cache, logs, mod files and any control panel or monitoring tools compete with the game server for memory. If the machine also hosts voice chat, a web panel, backups or another game, the 2 GB figure leaves little headroom. Memory pressure can lead to paging and erratic response even when the server process itself appears to fit.
When to plan more headroom
- Large or heavily scripted missions: More mission state and script activity can increase the working set.
- AI-heavy scenarios: AI entities add simulation state and may increase both memory and CPU demand.
- Large modification collections: Mods add files and may add scripts or assets loaded during a mission; there is no official universal RAM multiplier.
- Multiple instances: Each separate server instance needs its own memory, in addition to the operating system and management tools.
- Headless-client arrangements: A headless client is another running process or machine and must be budgeted separately from the main server.
Monitor actual use during the busiest mission rather than sizing from the lobby count alone. Leave enough unused memory for the operating system and short-lived spikes; otherwise a server can look healthy at startup and degrade after a long session or mission transition.
What CPU do I need for an Arma 3 server?
The official minimum is a 2.4 GHz dual-core CPU, and the recommended baseline is a 3.5 GHz quad-core CPU. For Arma 3, however, GHz and core count do not tell the whole story. Server simulation performance is the key consideration: a processor that completes the main simulation work quickly can outperform a model with more total cores but weaker per-core performance.

Why simulation performance matters
Bohemia’s Basic Server Config File guidance says the server is capped at 50 FPS and warns that below 20 FPS may indicate an overloaded server, potentially because of mission complexity. Its explanation is direct: “When running slower, it always uses all available CPU processing power to maintain the smoothest possible gameplay.” In practical terms, a busy server can consume the processing time available to it while still falling behind its intended update rate.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Server FPS is not the same as the client FPS shown on a player’s computer. It reflects how quickly the dedicated server advances simulation and communicates state. A low value can produce delayed AI reactions, sluggish scripts and late network updates even when individual players have powerful graphics cards.
What to look for when selecting a CPU
- Strong per-core or single-thread performance for the main simulation workload.
- Sustained clock speed under server load, rather than a short boost that quickly throttles.
- Additional cores for operating-system tasks, multiple instances, a headless client or other services.
- Stable virtualization performance if the server runs in a virtual machine; a provider’s advertised vCPU count does not by itself reveal the underlying CPU share.
Do not promise a player capacity from a processor’s advertised GHz. The same CPU can perform differently depending on mission scripts, AI density, mods, virtualization limits and background workloads.
Understanding the 50 FPS limit and the 20 FPS warning
Bohemia’s configuration documentation states that a dedicated server does not run above 50 FPS. Its startup-parameter documentation likewise describes a default dedicated-server and headless-client FPS limit of 50. A higher limit can mean more frequent network messages and more frequent simulation of entities and AI, but the documentation says the practical effect may or may not be noticeable. Raising a cap is therefore not a guaranteed performance fix.
Use the numbers as diagnostics:
- Near 50 FPS: The server is reaching its documented ceiling; this does not prove that every mission component has spare capacity.
- Between 20 and 50 FPS: Observe the trend during peak AI activity, large spawn events and mission transitions.
- Below 20 FPS: Treat it as a possible overload condition. Investigate mission complexity, scripts, AI, mods, CPU limits and competing processes.
Record server FPS during the worst part of the operation, not just immediately after startup. Averages can hide brief but disruptive drops.

Mission, AI and mods can outweigh the hardware label
Arma 3 capacity is workload-dependent. Two servers with identical CPUs and RAM can support different experiences because their missions ask the simulation to do different work.
Mission scripts
Frequent polling loops, large trigger systems, pathfinding requests and poorly optimized scripts can consume simulation time. If server FPS falls when a particular objective starts, compare the mission’s script activity before replacing hardware.
AI population
More AI generally means more entities to simulate. Complex behaviors, vehicles and large simultaneous engagements can create peaks that a quiet staging area never reveals. Test the heaviest expected encounter.
Mod collections
Mods can change loading time, memory use and script activity. The official requirements do not state a RAM allowance per mod, and mod file size alone does not predict CPU cost. Keep the server and every client on the exact required mod set and test updates before a scheduled event.
Connected users
Player count affects network traffic and the number of player-controlled entities, but it is not a standalone sizing equation. A smaller group in an AI-dense mission can be harder to run than a larger group in a simple scenario.

Can a headless client improve performance?
A headless client can move AI calculations away from the main dedicated-server instance. It is a workload-scaling option, not a substitute for adequate server hardware and not a hosting plan.
The mission must support it
Offloading is not automatic. The mission must be adapted so that the relevant AI work is extracted from the server and executed on the headless client. Without that mission-side design, adding a headless client may provide little benefit or create synchronization problems.
When it is worth considering
- Your operation is consistently AI-heavy and the main server is CPU-bound.
- You can modify or choose missions designed for headless-client use.
- You have a reliable second process or machine and can monitor both instances.
- The network path between the server and headless client is stable and low-latency.
Budget CPU, RAM and administration for the headless client itself. Test failover behavior: if it disconnects, the mission should handle the loss without leaving AI unmanaged or scripts stalled.
Self-hosting versus renting a managed Arma 3 server
There are two practical hosting paths. Self-hosting gives you control over the machine; managed hosting trades some control for simpler operations. Neither is universally faster. Compare the actual limits and controls in the plan or hardware you are considering.
| Factor | Self-hosting | Managed game-server hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware control | You choose and can upgrade the physical or virtual machine. | You receive the provider’s allocated CPU and RAM; check whether resources are dedicated, shared or capped. |
| Configuration access | Full access to files, startup parameters, logs and operating-system settings. | Access varies by control panel and plan; confirm that required parameters and mod tools are available. |
| Maintenance | You handle operating-system updates, security, backups and recovery. | The provider may handle platform maintenance, but game, mission and mod administration remains your responsibility unless explicitly included. |
| Network location | You select the data-center or home connection, subject to your own options. | Choose a location near most players and verify latency, bandwidth policy and protection against outages. |
| Scaling | Add CPU, RAM or another instance when you can provision it. | Scaling depends on available plans and whether migration is supported. |
| Cost pattern | Up-front hardware and electricity or a recurring virtual-machine bill. | Recurring subscription; prices and resource limits vary by provider and are not established here. |
Before renting, ask for the CPU model or performance policy, guaranteed RAM, storage limits, mod and mission upload support, backup retention, access to logs, restart controls, data-center choices and cancellation or migration terms. A low monthly price is not useful if the plan throttles the CPU during peak periods or blocks the parameters your mission requires.
Best Value
Self-hosting is attractive when you already own suitable hardware, need complete control or want to run several services. Renting is often simpler when you need a public location, predictable administration tools or a server online without maintaining your own machine. In either case, test the exact mission and mod set.
A practical sizing process
- Define the peak scenario. Write down the maximum simultaneous players, AI count, mission type, mod collection, number of server instances and whether a headless client is planned.
- Start with the official floor. Reject machines below 2.4 GHz dual-core and 2 GB RAM unless you have a specific reason and controlled test; use 3.5 GHz quad-core and 4 GB RAM as the published recommended starting point.
- Add headroom for the operating environment. Account for the operating system, logs, management tools, backups and any other services sharing the machine.
- Validate CPU behavior. Run the heaviest mission segment and observe server FPS, CPU saturation and throttling. Pay attention to the main simulation thread, not only total CPU percentage.
- Validate memory behavior. Watch usage through mission start, large spawns, transitions and long sessions. Investigate paging or steadily rising usage.
- Test the network path. Have players from the intended regions connect during peak activity. Check latency stability, packet loss and whether the host’s upload policy changes under load.
- Repeat after updates. New missions, scripts, mods or server builds can change the workload. Re-test before a major event.
Troubleshooting an overloaded server
Server FPS drops below 20
- Reproduce the drop and note which mission event was running.
- Temporarily remove optional mods or reduce AI to identify the workload driver.
- Stop unrelated services and check whether a virtual host is enforcing CPU limits.
- Review scripts and mission settings for excessive polling or entity creation.
- Only after identifying the bottleneck, consider a faster CPU, more guaranteed CPU share or a headless-client redesign.
Players report delay while server FPS looks healthy
Check network latency, packet loss, upload saturation and geographic distance. A server can maintain simulation speed while a poor network path delays updates. Also verify that clients use the required mod versions and that no single client is generating unusual traffic.
Memory usage keeps climbing
Check logs, mission transitions and scripts for a leak or unbounded entity creation. Confirm that the operating system is not swapping. Adding RAM may postpone failure but will not fix a process that continually consumes memory.
A headless client makes things worse
Confirm that the mission actually assigns AI to it, that both instances use compatible files and parameters, and that the connection is stable. If synchronization or network traffic becomes the new bottleneck, revert to the simpler arrangement and optimize the mission first.
Bottom line for choosing a server
Use 2 GB RAM with a 2.4 GHz dual-core CPU only as the official minimum baseline. Use the 4 GB RAM and 3.5 GHz quad-core recommendation as a starting point, then size for simulation performance, mission complexity, AI, mods, connected users and other services. Monitor the 50 FPS ceiling and the possible overload signal below 20 FPS. If AI dominates the workload, a mission-compatible headless client can help, but it requires mission changes and its own resources. Whether you self-host or rent, verify CPU limits, guaranteed memory, configuration access, network location, backups and mod support against the exact operation you intend to run.
