For a quick private session, use the official Arma 3 Launcher. For a persistent server, install the standalone server with SteamCMD. Choose FASTER2 when you want a Windows administration panel, Arma3Sync when your community already distributes a fixed repository, or managed hosting when you would rather pay for someone else to handle updates, networking and hardware. There is no universal winner: the right launcher depends on whether you value speed, scripting control, repeatable profiles or minimal maintenance.

Which Arma 3 launcher fits your server?
These tools do different jobs. The official launcher is a convenient way to start a small server from a machine that already has Arma 3 installed. SteamCMD gives a clean, scriptable standalone installation for a server that must run continuously. FASTER2 adds a Windows graphical administration layer around SteamCMD and server profiles. Arma3Sync is mainly a community-repository client, while managed hosting trades infrastructure control for convenience.

Use the table as a starting decision, not as a performance ranking. Server tick rate, mission scripting, mod complexity, player count and host hardware can matter more than the launcher.
Prepare the machine before installing anything
Hardware baseline
Bohemia Interactive’s dedicated-server documentation gives the following guidance for a server installation. It is baseline documentation, not an independent benchmark for a particular mission or player count.

A heavily scripted mission, many simultaneous players, or several server instances can require more headroom than those figures. Leave free disk space for the server files, Workshop content, logs, updates and backups rather than treating the storage figure as a complete capacity plan.
Software, access and records
- Choose Windows or a modern Linux distribution supported by the dedicated-server documentation. The graphical launcher and FASTER2 paths are most natural on Windows; a headless or scripted installation is usually easier to maintain with a standalone server.
- Have administrator access to the host, permission to install the server files, and a separate location for configuration, profiles and backups.
- Record the exact Arma 3 build, Workshop item IDs, mod versions, startup parameters, mission files and network rules. This inventory is the fastest way to reproduce a working installation after an update.
- Decide whether players connect only on a local network or from the Internet. Internet access adds host-firewall and router configuration work.
- Keep the server’s mod set and every client’s mod set aligned. A missing item, different version or different load order can produce mismatch or missing-content errors.
Option 1: Start with the official Arma 3 Launcher
This is the quickest route for a small private session or for testing whether a proposed mod list starts correctly. It is not the most convenient choice for a server that must run unattended, survive reboots or host several profiles.

- Open the Arma 3 Launcher.
- Open Parameters, then All Parameters, and select the Host section.
- Tick Server.
- Open the Mods tab and select the mods required by the mission.
- Press Play to start the server with that selection.
Use this path to validate a mod collection, demonstrate a mission to a few friends or run a short-lived session. The host machine is also doing client-side work if you play on it, so monitor CPU, memory and disk activity before inviting a larger group.
What this route does not solve
- It does not automatically make an Internet server reachable. Configure the host firewall and router forwarding when players are outside the local network.
- It does not replace disciplined version management. Every player still needs the same required mods and compatible versions.
- It is not a profile-management system for several independent servers. Move to a standalone installation or FASTER2 when you need repeatable named profiles, scheduled administration or multiple instances.
Option 2: Install a standalone server with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is the most transparent and scriptable path. Keep the dedicated-server files separate from the Arma 3 client, then manage configuration, profiles, startup parameters and updates explicitly. This separation makes it easier to run the service after a client update, copy a profile to another machine or maintain more than one instance.

Build a repeatable installation
- Create a dedicated server directory with enough free space for the base files, Workshop content, missions, logs and backups. Keep it separate from the desktop game’s installation.
- Install the standalone Arma 3 server package through SteamCMD, following the current package and authentication requirements for your operating system.
- Create a profile structure for server configuration, missions, administrator settings and logs. Use a different profile directory for each independent instance.
- Write down the exact Workshop item IDs and the order in which the server loads them. Have players use the same list and versions.
- Define the startup parameters and test the server locally before exposing it to the Internet.
- Automate or document updates. Take a backup of configuration and mission data before changing the server build or a large mod collection.

Parameter names are case-insensitive. Quote any value containing spaces. Keep a copy of the complete startup definition with the profile so a restart or migration does not depend on somebody remembering an old command line.
Networking and exposure
Permit the server executable through the host firewall and forward the selected port on the router when Internet players must connect. If the server appears locally but not to remote players, check those two layers first, then confirm that the host’s public address and any provider-level firewall allow the same port. Do not copy a port number from an unrelated guide: treat it as a value that must match your current build and network configuration.

Why SteamCMD is the long-term choice
- You can run the same documented profile after a reboot without opening the game client.
- Configuration files, scripts and logs remain inspectable, which makes troubleshooting easier.
- Separate directories allow multiple missions, mod sets or server instances without overwriting one another.
- You can choose when to update and retain backups for recovery instead of letting a client-side update change a live session unexpectedly.
The trade-off is operational work: you are responsible for patching, mod synchronization, firewall rules, backups and diagnosing failures.
Option 3: Manage a Windows server with FASTER2

When FASTER2 is the practical choice
- You operate on Windows and prefer a panel to hand-editing every configuration file.
- You maintain several communities, missions or mod collections and need named profiles that can be cloned.
- You want to import a working launcher preset instead of rebuilding the mod list manually.
- You still want access to the underlying server configuration and command-line options rather than a completely opaque hosted service.
A safe FASTER2 workflow
- Install the tool and point it at the intended SteamCMD and Arma server locations.
- Create one profile for a known-good baseline before adding experimental mods.
- Import or define the Workshop collection, then compare its item IDs with the list distributed to players.
- Set server configuration, mission parameters, difficulty and any headless-client settings for that profile.
- Clone the profile for a second mission or test branch instead of editing the production profile in place.
- Use the update checks deliberately: back up configuration and note the previous working build before applying a large update.
- Start the server, inspect its browser-visible mod list and test a client connection before announcing the profile.
FASTER2’s cited project page is a forum listing, not a guarantee of a current release or ongoing maintenance. Confirm the current download source, supported Arma build and authentication behavior before making it the foundation of a public operation. If the project stops tracking a game update, fall back to the standalone SteamCMD workflow rather than leaving your server on an unmaintained tool.
Option 4: Use Arma3Sync for a fixed community repository
Arma3Sync is relevant when a unit already distributes a controlled repository and expects members to use the same launcher workflow. Its documented installation guide covers the launcher-options panel, executable path, run parameters, performance controls and additional parameters.
Good use cases
- A clan or organized operation publishes one approved repository and wants every member to pull that same structure.
- The group has existing Arma3Sync instructions and a maintainer who verifies repository contents after game updates.
- You need a community distribution layer, not a general-purpose replacement for server configuration and network administration.
The available installation material is old, so treat Arma3Sync as a legacy or community option. Verify that it works with the current Arma 3 build, operating system and repository before making it the primary recommendation for new users. A repository client does not remove the server operator’s responsibility for profiles, ports, backups or a matching server-side mod set.
Option 5: Choose managed hosting
Managed hosting removes much of the SteamCMD, patching, port-forwarding and hardware work. Community reports describe hosts with built-in Steam Workshop workflows and control panels that simplify mod installation, but those reports are anecdotal. They do not establish a current provider’s price, uptime, locations, support quality or contract terms.

Questions to answer before paying
- Can the panel install and update the exact Workshop items your mission requires, including privately maintained content where applicable?
- Can you download configuration, mission files, logs and backups, or are they trapped in the panel?
- Can you choose the server region, CPU and memory allocation, and run more than one profile?
- Does the provider expose the startup parameters you need, including a custom port, password and mission directory?
- What happens when a mod update breaks the mission? Ask whether you can pin, roll back or restore a backup.
- Are there limits on player slots, mod storage, transfers, restarts or support response times?
Choose this route when your group values a working panel and predictable operations more than direct access to hardware and scripts. Verify every feature and current price on the provider’s own site; do not infer a service level from an anecdotal community post.

Keep mods, DLC and profiles compatible
Synchronize the complete mod set
Server and client lists must agree on required Workshop items and versions. Distribute one authoritative preset or written list containing item IDs, and record when it was last tested. When a player reports a missing-content or version-mismatch error, compare the IDs and versions first; changing unrelated startup settings will not repair a missing client dependency.
Check DLC restrictions
Bohemia’s Spotrep warns that some DLC data, including Contact data, is not fully multiplayer compatible and recommends hosting it only for special use cases. Re-check DLC and mod compatibility before publishing a preset, particularly when a mission depends on assets that not every player owns or can use in multiplayer.
Separate production and test profiles
Maintain a known-good production profile and a separate test profile. Apply game or mod updates to the test profile first, connect with a clean client, and record the result. With SteamCMD or FASTER2, cloning a profile gives you a practical rollback point; with the official launcher, keep an exported or written mod list so you can reconstruct the session.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The server starts, but nobody outside the house can see it
- Confirm that the server process is running and listening on the port selected in its startup parameters.
- Allow the executable and selected port through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Forward that same port on the router to the server’s local address.
- Check any upstream firewall or provider security group.
- Test from a connection outside the local network; a local test alone does not prove Internet reachability.
Players receive a mod or missing-content mismatch
- Compare the server’s Workshop item IDs with the client’s list.
- Check that both sides have completed updates and are not using different copies of a mod.
- Confirm load order and mission dependencies, not just the number of enabled mods.
- Remove a newly updated item in the test profile to identify whether that update introduced the mismatch.
A previously working profile fails after an update
Stop changing several variables at once. Restore the last backup or cloned profile, note the game and mod versions, then update one component at a time in the test environment. If a GUI tool no longer supports the current server build, start the standalone server directly with the documented parameters while you evaluate a replacement administration tool.

Check CPU, memory, disk activity and log growth while the mission is running. Compare the load with the documented baseline rather than assuming the launcher is the cause. Reduce mission or mod complexity in a test profile, then retest with the same player count. A launcher can organize files and parameters, but it cannot compensate for inadequate hardware or an inefficient mission script.
Players can connect but the mission does not load correctly
Verify the -mpmissions path, mission file name, profile directory and required mod dependencies. Check that the mission is present on the server and that clients have the content it references. If the issue appeared after changing profiles, compare the old and new startup definitions line by line.
A practical decision path
- Testing tonight? Use the official Arma 3 Launcher, select Server under Parameters > All Parameters > Host, select the Mods and press Play.
- Running a persistent or scripted service? Use a standalone server with SteamCMD, explicit profiles, documented parameters, firewall rules and backups.
- Running Windows with several profiles? Add FASTER2 if its current build supports your Arma version and you want GUI administration, cloning and Workshop automation.
- Already part of a repository-driven unit? Use Arma3Sync only after confirming current compatibility and following the unit’s maintained repository instructions.
- Do you want minimal infrastructure work? Compare managed hosts, verify their current limits and retain copies of your own configuration and mission data.
Whichever path you choose, document the software versions, Workshop IDs, startup parameters, network rules and backup location. That record is what turns a one-time working session into a server you can recover and maintain.
