Why Arma 3 says “Connecting failed”
Arma 3 can list a server successfully and still reject the join attempt. Seeing a server proves only that the browser received enough information to display it; it does not prove that your client matches the server’s game branch, data files, add-ons, anti-cheat policy, or network requirements.

A PBO error is a more specific case: it means the server and client are using different data.
Work through the checks below in order. The early steps are quick and affect the largest number of failed joins.

Use this order of checks
- Record the failure. Write down the server name, displayed error text, whether the server is marked official or modded, and whether BattlEye is shown as required. Do this before changing settings so you can compare results.
- Check the branch and version. Confirm that Arma 3 is running the same branch as the server. A client on the experimental-development branch cannot necessarily join a server on the normal branch, and a server or client on a different game version can be rejected.
- Match the complete mod and add-on set. Start the server through the Arma 3 Launcher, download every required Steam Workshop item, enable the required collection, and remove stale or extra mods if the server expects an exact set.
- Try the other official connection method. Use the server browser first. If the listing is missing, stale, or does not respond, use Direct Connect with the host address and port supplied by the administrator.
- Check BattlEye and filters. Make sure the server’s anti-cheat requirement matches your client. The browser can filter for non-BattlEye servers, but that is a diagnostic or server-policy choice, not a universal repair.
- Test local security and network interference. Check firewall and antivirus events, then perform a short test with a narrowly scoped exception or on a trusted network. Restore normal protection after the test.
- Repair data files. If the error names a PBO, remove the named PBO and its accompanying BISIGN file, verify Arma 3 in Steam, or redownload the relevant Workshop mod.
- Escalate with evidence. If the same server still fails, compare your results with another player or contact the administrator with the exact error and compatibility details.
Check the game branch and version first
Normal branch versus experimental-development
Arma 3 can be installed or launched from different branches. A server running one branch may reject a client running another, even when both installations otherwise appear healthy. In particular, Bohemia Interactive calls out servers on the experimental-development branch as a source of version mismatch.
Check the branch selected for your Arma 3 installation in Steam and compare it with the server’s information or the administrator’s instructions. Do not assume that an update completed on one side means the two sides are identical: the server may have changed branches, or it may be running a different build while it is being updated.
What to do after a mismatch
- Close Arma 3 and the launcher before changing the branch.
- Select the branch that the server requires, allow Steam to complete its update, and start the game again.
- If the server recently changed branch or version, wait for its administrator to finish updating rather than repeatedly reinstalling your client.
A branch mismatch is especially likely when you can join other servers but one particular server always returns you to the browser.
Make the mod and add-on set identical
Required mods are not optional
Many Arma 3 servers depend on user-generated add-ons. The server may require a specific Workshop version, a collection of several mods, or a matching set of keys and data files. Having the game itself updated is not enough if one required item is missing, disabled, or at a different revision.
Use the Arma 3 Launcher to manage the server’s required Workshop content. Download every required item, enable the collection supplied by the server, and launch from that configuration. If the server expects an exact set, disable unrelated mods for the test; an extra mod can be as incompatible as a missing one.

Remove stale or duplicate content
A mod can remain on disk after the server has replaced or renamed it. Disable old copies, duplicate entries, and collections that overlap. If one Workshop item repeatedly fails to download or loads with an error, unsubscribe and subscribe again, then let Steam redownload it before trying the server.
Do not mix a server’s current collection with an old preset simply because the names look similar. Compare the complete list and the versions or dates provided by the administrator. If only one modded server fails while vanilla servers work, focus on the collection rather than on your network.
Vanilla and modded servers require different checks

Server browser versus Direct Connect
When the browser is the better choice
The server browser is convenient because it discovers servers and displays their names, player counts, filters, and often their mod requirements. Refresh it when a listing appears stale. A stale entry can show a server that has restarted, changed its port, changed its branch, or is no longer accepting connections.
When to use Direct Connect
Direct Connect is the official fallback when the desired server does not appear or the browser entry is unreliable. Open the Direct Connect option, enter the host address and port exactly as supplied by the administrator, and attempt the join.
Direct Connect does not bypass compatibility checks. The server must be online, the address and port must be correct, and your branch, game version, mods, data files, and BattlEye state must still be compatible. If Direct Connect fails with the same message while other servers work, the address, port, or server configuration becomes more likely than a general Steam outage.

BattlEye errors and anti-cheat compatibility
BattlEye-protected servers can reject a client when anti-cheat initialization or policy does not match. The server administrator controls whether BattlEye is required, so a player cannot make an incompatible policy work simply by refreshing the browser.
First identify whether the target server requires BattlEye and whether your client reaches the BattlEye initialization stage. If the server browser offers a non-BattlEye filter, use it only to test whether the failure is specific to protected servers or to understand the server’s access policy. Disabling or avoiding BattlEye is not a general fix and may prevent access to the server you actually want.
If every BattlEye server rejects you but non-BattlEye servers work, report the exact initialization or kick message to the server administrator. Include your Arma 3 branch and mod list; anti-cheat failures can coexist with a version or add-on mismatch.
Firewall, antivirus, and router interference
Bohemia Interactive states that some antivirus programs and firewalls can prevent the game from starting or hamper multiplayer operation. It also notes that some routers and firewalls identify Steam multiplayer server queries as spam traffic. This can produce a failed join even when ordinary web browsing works.
Perform a controlled security test
- Check the firewall and antivirus event logs for a blocked Arma 3, Steam, or BattlEye process.
- Add a narrowly scoped exception for the game and Steam components only if your security software supports it. Do not disable protection permanently.
- Retry the same server without changing the branch or mod set, so the result tells you whether the security layer was involved.
- If possible, test on a trusted alternate network. A successful join there points toward the original router, firewall, or network policy.
- Restore the normal firewall and antivirus rules after testing, then create only the minimum exception needed.
Router interference is more plausible when the browser cannot discover servers, Direct Connect also fails, or every server is affected. It is less likely when one server fails while several unrelated servers work with the same client and network.

Fix a PBO or BISIGN data mismatch
A PBO error is not a generic internet failure. Bohemia Interactive defines it as a situation in which the server and client are using different data. The named PBO identifies the package that the connection check considers inconsistent.
Repair the client copy
- Note the exact PBO filename in the error.
- Close Arma 3 and the launcher.
- Delete the named PBO and its accompanying BISIGN file from the relevant game or mod folder.
- Verify Arma 3’s files in Steam, or redownload the Workshop mod that owns the file.
- Start the launcher with the corrected mod collection and retry the same server.
Deleting only an unrelated file will not solve a PBO error, and repeatedly deleting files without verifying or redownloading them can leave the installation incomplete. Keep the filename and mod name when reporting the problem.

If your client is clean and other players report the same PBO mismatch, the server may be using an incorrect or outdated copy. Only the administrator can update, clean, or redistribute the server’s data. Send the exact PBO name, your client version, and whether a verified redownload changed the result.
Why you can see a server but cannot join it
Server discovery and joining use different information. A browser response can arrive even when the subsequent game connection is blocked, the server requires a mod you do not have, or the server’s data differs from yours. The most common explanations are:
- The listing is on a different branch or game version.
- A required Workshop add-on is missing, disabled, outdated, or accompanied by an extra incompatible mod.
- BattlEye is required and its initialization or policy check fails.
- The router or firewall permits browser queries but blocks the game connection.
- The server has a PBO or other data package that does not match your client.
Use Direct Connect as a controlled comparison. If the browser and Direct Connect both fail, concentrate on compatibility, security, or the server itself rather than repeatedly refreshing the listing.
Vanilla, modded, and anti-cheat server choices

For administrators: separate a player problem from a server problem
Administrators should verify the server branch and version, the complete mod deployment, BattlEye policy, data-file consistency, and the ports and firewall rules that expose the server. A player who can join comparable servers but not yours may be reporting a server-side mismatch rather than a local installation fault.

Dedicated-server capacity depends on hardware and bandwidth. Bohemia Interactive’s FAQ describes practical scenarios ranging from 2 to 64 players; that is a planning range, not a guarantee for every mission, mod set, or machine. Measure the server’s actual workload and network capacity instead of treating the upper figure as an automatic limit.
Hosts should also provide players with one authoritative mod collection, the current branch and version, the server address and port for Direct Connect, and the BattlEye requirement. Clear instructions reduce false reports caused by an obsolete preset or an address copied from an old listing.
What to send when you need help
A vague report such as “it kicks me back to the browser” cannot distinguish a local client error from a server configuration problem. Include:
- The exact on-screen error, including any PBO, BISIGN, or BattlEye filename.
- The server name, address, and port, with the time of the failed attempt.
- Your Arma 3 branch and displayed game version.
- The complete enabled mod list and the collection supplied by the server.
- Whether BattlEye is enabled or required.
- Whether the server browser and Direct Connect produce the same result.
- Whether a vanilla server, another modded server, or another trusted network works.
- Whether Steam verification or a Workshop redownload changed the error.
This evidence lets an administrator see whether the failure follows your client, follows one server, follows a mod collection, or follows a network.

- Every server fails: check your branch, Steam files, BattlEye initialization, firewall, antivirus, and router.
