Arlo Pro 6 vs. Arlo Pro 5S: Which Security Camera Should You Choose?

Arlo Pro 6 adds Bluetooth setup and USB-C charging, but Pro 5S supports SecureLink and a broader set of listed base stations. Compare compatibility before upgrading.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Arlo Pro 6 if you want USB-C charging and Bluetooth setup, and you are comfortable connecting it to Wi-Fi or using one of its two supported SmartHubs. Choose the Pro 5S if you rely on SecureLink or have a compatible older Arlo base station you want to keep using. The cameras share their core 2K security features, so compatibility and day-to-day ownership matter more than headline resolution. Pro 6 does not work with SecureLink, and its hub support is narrower than the Pro 5S’s.

Arlo Pro 6 and Pro 5S: the important differences

Arlo’s current product naming calls the newer model the Arlo Pro Security Camera 2K (6th Gen); the other camera is the Arlo Pro 5S 2K. Both are wireless 2K HDR cameras. The practical choice is less about image resolution and more about how each camera installs, charges, connects to an existing Arlo setup, and handles premium recording features.

What the shared camera specifications mean in practice

Both cameras record in 2K HDR and have a 160-degree diagonal field of view, color night vision, and 12x digital zoom. They also share an integrated spotlight, siren, and two-way audio. Those similarities are useful because they narrow the decision: if you are comparing only the headline image resolution, view angle, or core security hardware, neither model has a clear advantage in the specifications listed by Arlo.

Arlo Pro Wireless Security Camera 2K HDR (6th Gen) - 2-Cam
  • Reliable 2K Protection for Everyday Security: Monitor doors, yards, and entry points with this camera for home security. An outdoor camera with 2K HDR video, smart detection, and auto zoom with motion tracking in a simple wireless setup.
  • Arlo Secure Early Warning System Unlocks Advanced Features: Get 60-day video history, AI detection, and emergency response. A paid plan is required after trial. Live streaming and basic alerts work without a subscription.
  • Smart Detection with Custom Alerts & Event Summaries: Receive alerts that matter like a person at your door or a vehicle in your driveway. AI-generated event captions summarize activity, and keyword search helps you quickly find important activity.
  • Built for Real Emergencies for Fast Response When It Matters: Trigger emergency response directly from the app to contact police, fire, or medical services tied to your camera’s location with pre-filled details for faster access.
  • Clear Detail with Wide-Angle Coverage: Capture activity with 2K High Dynamic Range (HDR) video and a 160° panoramic field of view. See sharp video with enhanced contrast to see faces and movement clearly in any lighting, day or night.

The shared 160-degree figure is a diagonal field-of-view specification, not a promise that every installation will capture the same useful scene. Placement still determines whether a camera sees a doorway, driveway, or other area you care about. Likewise, the presence of a spotlight, siren, and two-way audio tells you those features are built into both cameras; it does not mean one of them is automatically better suited to your home. Choose based on the coverage and system arrangement you need, then make sure the mounting location and connection method work there.

Arlo’s product pages identify both as hub-optional cameras that can connect directly to Wi-Fi. That means you do not have to buy a base station simply to use either camera. It does not mean every setup has identical storage, integration, or SecureLink options: hub compatibility remains a key difference, and premium cloud features depend on the plan terms in your region.

Setup and charging: where Pro 6 has the clearer advantage

Bluetooth setup on Pro 6

Pro 6 adds Bluetooth installation. That is a setup convenience, not a different surveillance capability: both cameras still provide the shared video and security hardware listed above. If you are installing cameras yourself, or expect to add them to a system later, the newer model’s Bluetooth setup is a meaningful quality-of-life improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a new installation, consider how often you expect to repeat setup. If you are adding one camera and rarely changing your system, Bluetooth may be a modest convenience rather than a deciding feature. If you are installing several cameras or anticipate reconfiguring them, an easier installation path may matter more. The available product information establishes Bluetooth installation for Pro 6; it does not establish a different image quality or expanded security feature set as a result of Bluetooth.

USB-C versus magnetic charging

Pro 6 uses a USB-C connector, while Pro 5S uses Arlo’s magnetic charging connection. The difference matters if you already have charging cables or mounts: do not assume a Pro 5S magnetic charging accessory will fit Pro 6. Arlo confirms USB-C accessory compatibility on the Pro 6 product page; check the individual accessory’s supported-model list before buying. The Pro 5 spec sheet, updated July 13, 2026, is a relevant reference for Pro 5S accessory details.

Think of charging as an ownership and accessory question, not a reason to assume existing accessories transfer. If your current setup includes magnetic charging cables or mounts, the Pro 5S connection may be more convenient to retain. If you prefer USB-C, want Pro 6’s charging connector, or are buying compatible accessories from scratch, Pro 6 may fit better. Arlo’s product information confirms Pro 6 works with its USB-C accessories, but compatibility should be checked accessory by accessory; a similar appearance or a shared brand name is not enough to establish fit.

Battery life: treat both numbers as estimates

Arlo states that Pro 6 offers “up to 15% more battery life” than Pro 5S. This is a manufacturer comparison, not an independently verified test result. The Pro 5S product page lists “8 months,” but that is also a manufacturer estimate, not a promised interval. Actual runtime depends on settings and use, and the available information does not establish a universal number of months for either camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the claim as a directional reason to favor Pro 6 if reducing charging frequency is important, not as a guarantee that it will last a particular amount of time in your home. Activity levels, configuration, and how the camera is used affect battery drain; a busy entrance and a quiet yard should not be expected to produce identical runtime.

The phrase “up to” matters: it describes the top end of Arlo’s comparison, not a guaranteed improvement in every home or under every camera setting. Arlo’s support comparison, updated August 14, 2025, gives the 15% claim; no independent comparative battery test is available here to verify it. Treat the Pro 5S figure of eight months in the same way—as a product-page estimate rather than a schedule you can count on.

Before making battery life the deciding factor, consider how much motion the camera is likely to encounter and how inconvenient it would be to recharge it. A camera facing a high-traffic entry may have a different runtime from one watching a quieter area. The reliable comparison is that Arlo claims a potential battery-life improvement for Pro 6, while Pro 5S’s page states an estimated eight months; neither figure guarantees your actual charging interval.

Check hub and SecureLink compatibility before replacing a camera

Pro 6 is not a universal upgrade for an older Arlo system. Arlo’s comparison says that Pro 6 does not support SecureLink and supports only SmartHubs VMB5000 and VMB4540. The Pro 5S product page lists VMB4000, VMB4500, VMB4540, and VMB5000, and describes SecureLink support. Verify support for the exact camera SKU and region before purchasing, as well as current firmware and compatibility information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arlo characterizes Pro 6 as having “increased compatibility and more installation flexibility than Arlo Pro 5.” That is Arlo’s description of the broader Pro 5 model comparison, not a promise that Pro 6 works with every older hub: the model-specific compatibility limits above still apply. Owners of Arlo Home Security systems that depend on SecureLink should not treat Pro 6 as a drop-in replacement.

Arlo Pro Wireless Security Camera 2K HDR (6th Gen) - 3-Cam

The apparent tension is easy to miss: Pro 6 may offer more installation flexibility in some respects, including Bluetooth setup and direct Wi-Fi, while having a narrower list of supported SmartHubs than Pro 5S. “More flexible” should not be read as “works with every Arlo base station.” Arlo’s published comparison says Pro 6 does not support SecureLink, and its product page lists only SmartHubs VMB5000 and VMB4540. If you already own another base station, check its model number rather than relying on the general product family name.

A hub is optional for either camera: Arlo’s product FAQs say both can connect directly to Wi-Fi. That can suit a new installation without an existing base station. A hub may still matter if you want to retain an established system, use a supported local-storage arrangement, or keep a SecureLink setup; check the exact hub and camera support rather than assuming that every hub feature is shared.

Direct Wi-Fi can avoid a hub purchase, but it does not erase the difference between the models. Pro 5S is the listed choice when SecureLink matters, while Pro 6 is an option for direct Wi-Fi users who want its USB-C and Bluetooth features. If your current system uses a base station, find out whether you depend on that hub for the way you currently connect or store video before deciding that direct Wi-Fi is an equivalent replacement for your existing arrangement.

A quick compatibility check

  1. Identify the model number printed on your existing Arlo base station or SmartHub. Compare it with the supported model numbers in the table and Arlo’s current product information.
  2. Determine whether your cameras or Arlo Home Security setup rely on SecureLink. If they do, Pro 6 is not the compatible replacement; consider Pro 5S or confirm an alternative connection plan with Arlo.
  3. If you intend to use a hub, verify that the exact camera model and regional SKU are supported. Do not infer support from a similar model name or from another camera generation.
  4. If you plan to connect directly to Wi-Fi, confirm that the intended installation location has suitable wireless coverage and that this connection method meets your storage and system needs.

This check is especially important when replacing only one camera in a larger installation. The fact that an existing camera works with a particular base station does not establish that a newer camera generation does too. For Pro 6, the SmartHub models listed are VMB5000 and VMB4540; for Pro 5S, the product page lists VMB4000, VMB4500, VMB4540, and VMB5000, along with SecureLink support. Verify the latest official compatibility details for your model and region before placing an order.

What works without a paid Arlo plan?

Arlo says basic live viewing and motion notifications remain available without a paid subscription. Premium features such as cloud video storage, interactive notifications, and video object detection require a paid Secure plan after the trial. That distinction matters if you expect to review recorded clips after an event: do not assume that a camera’s motion alert also means you have ongoing cloud video storage without a plan.

Trial length, plan features, and subscription costs can change and may differ by country. Check the current plan terms for your location before choosing a camera, especially if recorded footage or object detection is central to how you intend to use it. The product pages describe plan-dependent features but do not establish permanent pricing.

Arlo Pro Wireless Security Camera 2K HDR (6th Gen) - 1-Cam

  • Clear Detail with Wide-Angle Coverage: Capture activity with 2K High Dynamic Range (HDR) video and a 160° panoramic field of view. See sharp video with enhanced contrast to see faces and movement clearly in any lighting, day or night.

In practical terms, ask yourself what you need the camera to do after it sends an alert. If your priority is opening a live view when you receive a motion notification, Arlo says those basic functions remain available without a paid plan. If you want stored cloud clips to review later, interactive notifications, or video object detection, expect those premium features to depend on a paid Secure subscription after the trial. Do not treat “motion notifications available” as proof that cloud recording is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The subscription question applies to both models, so it is not a reason to choose Pro 6 over Pro 5S or vice versa. It is part of the overall cost of owning either camera if you want premium recording and detection features. No fixed plan price is quoted here because Arlo’s current terms may vary by country and change over time. Check Arlo’s plan details for your location, including what is covered after any trial ends, before you make a purchase.

Ownership costs and accessories to check

There is no dependable fixed price comparison here: current camera prices, bundles, sale offers, availability, and plan costs can change by date and region. Compare the listings available where you live, and include the likely accessory and subscription costs in your decision. A lower camera price does not necessarily mean lower ownership cost if you need a different charging accessory or a paid plan for the features you expect to use.

For accessories, match the exact generation and connection type. Pro 6 uses USB-C, and Arlo’s product page confirms compatibility with its USB-C accessories. Pro 5S uses magnetic charging accessories. Before buying a charging cable, mount, or other add-on, inspect the accessory’s own supported-model list; do not assume Pro 5S accessories automatically fit Pro 6 or that an accessory sold for a similar Arlo camera works with either one.

Likewise, do not count a hub as a required purchase for either model, since both can connect directly to Wi-Fi according to their product FAQs. But do not omit one from your budget if your chosen setup depends on a supported SmartHub or on maintaining a current system arrangement. The total cost depends on what you already own, what features you expect, the subscription terms in your country, and the exact accessories you need.

Which camera should you choose?

Choose Pro 6 if setup convenience and charging are priorities

  • You want Bluetooth installation and a USB-C charging connector.
  • You value Arlo’s stated battery improvement, while understanding it is a manufacturer claim rather than a guaranteed runtime.
  • You will connect directly to Wi-Fi or already have one of the SmartHubs it supports.
  • You are not depending on SecureLink or an unsupported older base station.
  • You are comfortable checking compatible USB-C accessories separately rather than assuming magnetic Pro 5S accessories will transfer.

Choose Pro 5S if preserving an existing Arlo setup matters

  • You rely on SecureLink, including through an Arlo Home Security setup.
  • You own one of the older compatible base stations listed for Pro 5S and want to retain that arrangement.
  • You already use Pro 5S magnetic charging accessories that you want to keep, after confirming the accessory’s model compatibility.
  • You do not need Pro 6’s Bluetooth installation or USB-C charging.
  • You want a product whose listed compatibility includes VMB4000 or VMB4500, subject to confirmation of current support for your exact SKU and region.

If you are starting fresh and do not need SecureLink, either camera can be used without a hub. In that case, compare the models on setup and charging preferences, the battery claim’s limited scope, and whether the plan-dependent features fit your budget and recording needs. Current prices, bundles, and availability vary, so check the listings for your region rather than relying on a fixed price comparison.

  • Arlo Secure Plan Trial: Premium features like 30-Day Video Cloud Storage; People, Package, and Vehicle Detection; 24/7 Emergency Response; and more, require a paid subscription after trial

If you are upgrading an existing system, start with compatibility rather than the newest feature. A camera that uses a different charging connector may be manageable; a camera that does not support the connection your system relies on is a more fundamental mismatch. If you do not rely on a hub or SecureLink, then setup convenience, charging preferences, and the subscription features you plan to use become the more useful tie-breakers.

Bottom line

Pro 6 is the better fit for buyers who want the newer charging and setup approach and can use its supported connection options. Pro 5S is the safer choice when SecureLink or a compatible older base station is part of the system you need to keep. Check hub model, SecureLink use, and plan requirements before deciding; the shared 2K camera capabilities do not resolve those compatibility questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Arlo Pro 6 worth upgrading to from the Pro 5S?

It can be if you want Bluetooth installation, USB-C charging, or Arlo’s claimed battery improvement of up to 15%. Both cameras share 2K HDR, a 160-degree diagonal field of view, color night vision, spotlight, siren, and two-way audio, so the upgrade is not a resolution jump. Do not upgrade without checking compatibility: Pro 6 does not support SecureLink and lists only SmartHubs VMB5000 and VMB4540.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Arlo Pro 6 work with my Arlo base station?

Arlo lists SmartHubs VMB5000 and VMB4540 for Pro 6, and says it does not support SecureLink. The Pro 5S product page lists VMB4000, VMB4500, VMB4540, and VMB5000, as well as SecureLink support. Check the exact model number, camera SKU, region, and current support information before buying.

Do I need an Arlo hub to use Pro 6 or Pro 5S?

No. Arlo’s product FAQs say both cameras can connect directly to Wi-Fi without a hub. A supported SmartHub may still matter for an existing system or a particular storage and connection arrangement, so direct Wi-Fi should not be assumed to preserve every hub-dependent feature.

Do I need an Arlo Secure subscription?

Arlo says basic live viewing and motion notifications remain available without a paid plan. Premium features—including cloud video storage, interactive notifications, and video object detection—require a paid Secure plan after the trial. Check current plan features and prices for your country, as terms can change.

How long does the battery last on each camera?

Arlo’s Pro 5S product page lists eight months, while Arlo says Pro 6 offers up to 15% more battery life than Pro 5S. These are manufacturer estimates and claims, not guaranteed runtimes or independent test results. Actual battery life depends on settings and use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I reuse my Pro 5S charging accessories with Pro 6?

Do not assume so. Pro 5S uses a magnetic charging connection, while Pro 6 uses USB-C. Arlo confirms Pro 6 compatibility with its USB-C accessories; check each accessory’s supported-model list before buying or reusing it.
