The best ARK weapon depends on what you are doing and how far your survivor has progressed. A spear or bow keeps a new character alive, a crossbow adds dependable damage and taming utility, the Longneck Rifle becomes the best deliberate single-target firearm, the Pump-Action Shotgun dominates cramped close-range fights, and the Assault Rifle is the sustained-fire choice once ammunition production is reliable. Tek weapons belong to specialized end-game roles rather than a universal “best” slot.
Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This progression applies broadly to ARK: Survival Evolved and its remastered ARK: Survival Ascended. Exact engrams, balance, maps, mods, server rates, and PvE/PvP rules can change the practical answer, so use the recommendations as a decision framework rather than a fixed tier list.

What “best weapon” means in ARK
ARK’s arsenal moves from primitive melee tools and bows to crossbows, firearms, explosives, mounted weapons, and Tek technology. The weapon that looks strongest on paper can be the wrong choice if you cannot produce its ammunition, repair it after a cave run, or use it accurately at the intended range.
Evaluate a weapon on these factors before calling it the best:
#1 Best Overall
- Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame, train, ride and breed the 100+ dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground Build your character's strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems
- Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
- Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
- Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts
- Purpose: damage, taming, harvesting, mobility, defense, or siege.
- Availability: survivor level, engram, crafting station, and required materials.
- Ammunition: projectile type, crafting ingredients, stack size, and how quickly you can manufacture it.
- Handling: range, accuracy, draw or reload time, recoil, spread, and whether a scope helps or hurts.
- Survivability: durability, repair cost, and the consequences of losing the item on a death run.
- Quality: primitive craftables compete with Ramshackle, Apprentice, Journeyman, Mastercraft, and Ascendant items from loot or blueprints.
- Ruleset: PvE, PvP, caves, bosses, map-specific engrams, mods, and unofficial multipliers all alter priorities.
Most weapons deteriorate and require periodic repair. Ammunition is also learned separately from the weapon engram, so unlocking a gun does not automatically give you the ability to make its bullets.
Best weapon progression at a glance
The table is a practical path for a mostly unmodded survivor. “Station” means the normal crafting location for the weapon or its tier; maps and mods may alter this.

Keep a backup melee weapon even after firearms become available. It costs less to use against a stray dodo or harvesting target and remains useful when ammunition is exhausted.
Stage 1: first spawn and primitive survival
Start with a spear or other primitive melee weapon
A spear is the sensible first defensive tool because it is cheap, immediately available, and usable before you have a Smithy. Primitive melee weapons are also safer for finishing a weakened creature when you do not want to spend an arrow. Carry more than one if you are traveling: durability loss can leave a survivor unarmed at exactly the wrong moment.
Add a bow as soon as materials allow
The bow changes early survival from trading blows to controlling distance. Fiber, wood, and thatch are common enough that a bow is normally an early craft, and Stone Arrows support both hunting and defense. Draw time, stamina, and projectile drop still matter; fire from a stable position instead of trying to shoot while sprinting around a hostile creature.
Do not discard melee when the bow is crafted. Early ammunition is limited, and a bow is inefficient for routine harvesting or a target already within striking distance. A two-slot primitive loadout—melee weapon and bow—covers more situations than either item alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrimitive-stage mistakes to avoid
- Firing every arrow at a creature that can simply be avoided.
- Taking a low-durability weapon into a cave or long shoreline trip without a spare.
- Assuming a ranged weapon replaces armor, food, stamina management, or a retreat route.
Stage 2: metal tools, crossbow, and taming utility
Upgrade to a crossbow at the Smithy tier
The crossbow is the first major ranged upgrade for most survivors. It delivers a stronger shot than the primitive bow and is easier to use for measured attacks against medium threats. Its greatest value is utility: tranquilizer ammunition makes it a core taming tool, not merely a damage weapon.
Bring normal arrows for damage and tranquilizer ammunition when a tame is planned. Knockout work requires patience: allow torpor to build between shots, watch the creature’s health, and avoid panic-firing when a target is close to death. A crossbow also works from a mount or elevated position, although movement and line of sight still affect accuracy.
Carry a pike or sword for close defense
A pike gives useful reach and a sword offers dependable close damage once resources permit. Choose based on what you can replace. A high-quality drop can make either excellent, but a fragile item with an expensive repair bill is a poor everyday tool for routine travel.

Why this is not a universal dominance claim
Crossbow-and-pike is a practical survival and taming package, not a promise that it wins every map or server matchup. Official rates, creature levels, player armor, building rules, and modded weapons can move the breakpoint at which firearms become worthwhile.

Simple Pistol as an optional bridge
The Simple Pistol is learned at level 34 and uses Simple Bullets. It fires six shots before reloading and is useful against weak-to-mid-range opponents, particularly players without heavy armor. Its low commitment can make sense if you already have the materials and want a sidearm for emergencies.
It is not usually the best long-term investment. The Longneck Rifle becomes available one level later and fills the deliberate single-shot role more effectively. Bullets, metal, and repair resources spent on a pistol may be better reserved for the rifle unless your server settings make the pistol unusually cheap.
When a pistol still makes sense
- You need a compact backup while your main weapon is reloading.
- Your group has a surplus of Simple Bullets but not the materials for advanced ammunition.
- You are fighting lightly armored targets where rapid follow-up shots matter more than maximum damage per shot.
Stage 4: Longneck Rifle and tranquilizer work
Why the Longneck is the default mid-game recommendation
The Longneck Rifle is learned at level 35 and is described by the ARK Official Community Wiki as having the highest damage per shot of any non-Tek gun. That makes it the strongest general recommendation for deliberate single targets: hunting valuable creatures, taking a carefully aimed PvE shot, or punishing an exposed player.
Its efficiency comes from controlled shots rather than a high rate of fire. You can carry fewer rounds than an automatic weapon and still solve many encounters, provided you have time to aim and a safe firing position.
Scope limitations and tranquilizer trade-offs
The rifle’s scope has sway. Crouching or going prone can reduce movement, but it does not remove the limitation. More importantly, the scope is incompatible with tranquilizer darts; attaching or using the scope changes the ammunition behavior so it cannot serve as a normal scoped knockout rifle. Carry a crossbow for taming, or configure the Longneck without the scope when tranquilizing is the priority.
This is why a “best gun” answer that ignores taming is incomplete. A survivor who hunts and tames needs a precise lethal option and a separate, controlled knockout option.
Use it efficiently
- Fire from cover or a raised platform rather than standing in melee range.
- Keep ordinary and tranquilizing ammunition clearly separated in storage.
- Repair before a long expedition; losing durability during a boss or cave run is more expensive than repairing at base.
- Use a crossbow when the target is moving unpredictably or when losing a rifle would be unacceptable.
Stage 5: fabricated close-range damage
Pump-Action Shotgun for caves and cramped fights
The Pump-Action Shotgun unlocks at level 55 in the Fabricator. It is an upgraded shotgun that fires more shots between reloads, making it the close-range workhorse for caves, tight corridors, and encounters where a creature can reach you before a longneck shot is safely lined up.
Shotguns reward distance discipline. Their spread and pellet behavior mean that a point-blank blast and a shot taken at the edge of effective range are not equivalent. Use it when you can control the engagement, not as a universal replacement for a rifle.

Account for shells, reloads, and durability
Simple Shotgun Ammo costs more operationally than primitive arrows, and repeated blasts can consume a large reserve during a cave expedition. Reload timing is also a tactical issue: fire enough to stop the immediate threat, then reload behind cover instead of emptying the weapon while surrounded. Higher-quality versions hit harder but can demand substantially more resources to repair.
For a balanced cave kit, pair the shotgun with a melee weapon and a crossbow. The shotgun handles sudden close threats, the melee weapon avoids wasting shells on weak creatures, and the crossbow preserves a quiet, controlled option.
Stage 6: automatic fire and heavy options
Assault Rifle for sustained fire
The Assault Rifle unlocks at level 58 and uses Advanced Rifle Bullets. Its official entry describes a 40-round magazine that can be discharged in five seconds, followed by a 2.5-second reload. That tempo is valuable when you must maintain pressure on a moving target or defend a position, but it also makes ammunition disappear quickly.
Choose the rifle only when your production chain can support it: metal for the weapon and repairs, gunpowder, and a steady supply of Advanced Rifle Bullets. In a resource-poor solo world, a Longneck and shotgun combination often solves more encounters per ingot and per crafting trip.
Understand its role in PvE and PvP
In PvE, automatic fire is useful for a high-health threat that cannot be safely approached, but many routine creatures do not justify the bullet cost. In PvP, magazine capacity and reload windows matter alongside armor, cover, latency, and team coordination. A rifle that is excellent in a base defense may be wasteful while roaming the map.
Rocket launchers and mounted weapons
The broader roster includes rocket-propelled weapons and mounted weapons such as ballista and catapult turrets. Treat these as siege or specialized tools rather than everyday carry items. Their ammunition, setup time, weight, and risk of collateral damage make them encounter-specific. Take them when the planned raid, defense, or structure target justifies the cost.
Stage 7: Tek and end-game specialization
Tekgrams are a real requirement
End-game Tek weapons require the relevant Tekgrams; ordinary weapons do not have that same Tekgram gate. Unlocking a Tek item therefore depends on boss progression and the specific engram, not simply on reaching a high survivor level.
Tek equipment is strongest when it solves a defined problem: a boss preparation route, a high-end PvP role, a map-specific traversal challenge, or a late-game encounter with enough Element access to sustain use. It is not automatically the best option for inexpensive hunting or everyday taming.
Build an end-game mix instead of one “ultimate” gun
A sensible late-game kit normally combines a reliable firearm, a close-range option, taming utility, and whatever explosive or Tek item the next encounter requires. Keep a reserve loadout in storage so a death does not erase every advanced weapon you own. The right mix depends on whether your next objective is a cave, a boss arena, a raid, or a long taming expedition.

Weapon quality, blueprints, and loot
Primitive is only the starting quality. The official quality progression includes Primitive, Ramshackle, Apprentice, Journeyman, Mastercraft, and Ascendant. Higher-quality weapons can outperform newly crafted primitive versions by a wide margin, but they can also cost substantially more materials to craft or repair.
A strong blueprint or loot drop can therefore change your progression. A Ramshackle or Apprentice Longneck may be a better investment than crafting a primitive rifle, while an Ascendant shotgun may be powerful enough to reserve for caves and bosses rather than risk on a casual trip.
| Quality decision | Use it when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Primitive craftable | You need a dependable item immediately or can replace it cheaply | Lower damage and durability; frequent replacement |
| Ramshackle or Apprentice | The upgrade is affordable and the weapon fills a regular role | Repair cost can exceed the value of routine targets |
| Journeyman or Mastercraft | You are preparing for difficult caves, bosses, or organized PvP | Blueprint crafting may require a large resource stockpile |
| Ascendant | The encounter justifies maximum performance and replacement risk | Very high crafting and repair burden; avoid carrying it casually |
Judge quality together with durability and material cost. A damage increase that consumes your entire metal reserve may weaken the rest of your base more than it helps one fight.
Ammunition and production planning
ARK ammunition spans early stones, arrows, and bolts; Simple Bullets and shells; Advanced Rifle Bullets; and Rocket Propelled Grenades and other specialized projectiles. Each ammunition engram is learned separately from its weapon, so add the bullet, shell, arrow, or grenade engram to your progression plan.
Use a production checklist
- Identify the encounter. Decide whether the goal is taming, hunting, cave clearing, base defense, or siege.
- Choose the cheapest adequate projectile. Do not spend advanced bullets on creatures that a bow or pike can handle safely.
- Craft a reserve. Carry enough for the planned route plus a recovery margin, but store the majority at base.
- Separate ammunition types. Label ordinary and tranquilizing ammunition so a rushed reload does not produce the wrong result.
- Check repair materials. Ammunition without a functioning weapon is dead weight; repair before departure.
Unofficial servers can multiply harvest and crafting rates, which makes expensive ammunition more practical. Conversely, a low-rate solo server magnifies every bullet and shell decision.
Loadouts by activity
General PvE exploration
Carry a melee weapon, crossbow, Longneck, and enough ordinary ammunition for the route. Add a shotgun for caves or dense interiors. This combination covers harvesting, controlled shots, taming emergencies, and close defense without forcing every problem into an automatic-fire solution.

Make the crossbow and tranquilizing ammunition the center of the kit. Bring a melee backup, spare ranged weapon, food, and a way to protect the unconscious creature. Use the Longneck only in a configuration that supports the ammunition you intend to fire; the scope limitation makes a dedicated crossbow the simpler choice.
Cave runs
Use the Pump-Action Shotgun for sudden close threats, a pike or sword when shells are wasteful, and a crossbow for targets that can be engaged at distance. High-quality gear is valuable here, but replacement risk is real: carry a backup rather than your only irreplaceable blueprint item.
PvP roaming
Prioritize the weapon that matches your group’s engagement distance. The Longneck rewards patience and a clear shot, while the Assault Rifle supports sustained pressure if your bullet supply is secure. Shotguns are dangerous in confined fights. Armor, cover, movement, and reload timing can matter more than nominal damage.
Best Value
Siege and structure attacks
Rocket-propelled and mounted weapons belong in a planned siege inventory. Confirm the target, ammunition quantity, firing position, and escape route before taking them out. Their resource cost and collateral risk make casual experimentation expensive.
Common mistakes and fixes
Chasing a universal tier list
Fix: Define the job first. “Best for taming,” “best for a cave,” and “best for sustained PvP fire” are different questions.
Ignoring ammunition engrams
Fix: Learn the ammunition engram alongside the weapon and test one reload before leaving base.
Using a scope for tranquilizer work
Fix: Use a crossbow or an unscoped rifle arrangement because the Longneck scope is incompatible with tranquilizer darts.
Bringing only one weapon
Fix: Pair a ranged weapon with melee, and carry a second option when the primary has expensive repairs or a narrow range.

Equipping high quality without budgeting repairs
Fix: Compare the blueprint’s material bill with your metal and polymer reserves before crafting. Save exceptional items for encounters that justify their cost.
Assuming official progression survives every mod
Fix: Check the server’s engram overrides, loot tables, harvest multipliers, creature balance, and map-specific content before copying a progression guide exactly.
A quick decision framework
- Need immediate defense with no station? Use a spear or other primitive melee weapon and add a bow.
- Need to tame or conserve resources? Use a crossbow with the appropriate tranquilizing ammunition.
- Need one accurate shot against a valuable target? Use the Longneck Rifle, respecting its scope and ammunition limitations.
- Expect close, crowded combat? Choose the Pump-Action Shotgun and budget shells and reload windows.
- Need continuous pressure and have an ammunition factory? Use the Assault Rifle.
- Planning a siege, boss, or Tek encounter? Bring the specialized explosive, mounted, or Tek weapon required by that objective, not merely the most advanced item you own.
The strongest ARK progression is therefore layered: cheap melee for routine work, a bow or crossbow for distance and taming, a Longneck for precise single-target damage, a shotgun for confined fights, and an automatic or Tek option only when the encounter and supply chain justify it.
