If ARK: Survival Evolved appears to stop giving XP, first confirm who should receive it and whether that survivor or tame has reached its level limit. Then check the server or Host/Local XP multipliers, run a dismounted harvest or crafting test, try an Explorer Note, and update the client and server before changing a save. Those checks distinguish a real XP failure from XP being credited elsewhere, a cap, a zero or reduced multiplier, or an old mounted-XP bug.

What “ARK not giving XP” usually means
The symptom is often an XP bar that does not move after a kill, harvest, craft, mount ride, or Explorer Note. ARK awards experience to eligible recipients rather than automatically to the character you are watching. A ridden tame, the survivor, a nearby tribe member, or another eligible player can receive the award depending on the action and situation.

There are five practical explanations to separate:
- The XP went to a tame, mount, tribe member, or another eligible recipient.
- The survivor or creature is at its applicable level cap.
- An XP multiplier is reduced, set to zero, or overridden by another setting.
- The activity was indirect, so it did not award the character the amount you expected.
- The client or server is running an old build with a known mounted-XP problem.
Do not start by editing a save or raising every multiplier. A controlled test identifies the category with far less risk.
Check the XP recipient before changing anything
Survivor, ridden tame, or unridden tame
Look at the exact bar and level of the entity that performed or benefited from the action. When mounted, an action can credit the mount rather than the survivor. An unridden tame has different XP behavior from a ridden one, and a nearby tribe member may receive a share in multiplayer. Dismount before testing your own survivor.

Nearby tribe members and other players
On a server, XP can be credited to another eligible player. Ask whether a tribe mate gained a level at the moment your bar appeared unchanged. Record whether the issue occurs alone, in a tribe, or with other players nearby; that distinction is important when diagnosing an apparently missing award.
Maximum-level creatures and Meks
The official ARK experience documentation states that maximum-level creatures and Meks do not gain passive XP. If the tame is already at its applicable cap, waiting near fights or other XP activity will not move its bar. A multiplier change cannot remove a level cap.
Run a controlled XP test
Use an action whose XP behavior is documented instead of relying on a complicated battle or a shared kill. The test should be performed while dismounted and with the survivor bar visible.
- Record the starting state. Note the survivor’s current level, the visible progress toward the next level, whether you are mounted, and whether the session is single-player, Host/Local, official, or unofficial.
- Dismount. Move away from a tame or mount far enough that you can identify the survivor as the actor.
- Harvest a nearby resource. Harvesting is a documented survivor XP source. Watch the bar immediately after the action.
- Craft a simple item. Choose a low-cost recipe you can make without changing other settings. Crafting is also listed as a survivor XP source.
- Interpret the result. If either action moves the bar, the original activity or recipient—not the basic XP system—was the likely cause. If neither action moves it, continue with the cap, multiplier, and update checks.
This test avoids confusing mount XP, shared kills, delayed level-up notifications, and one-off event bonuses with a failure of survivor XP.
Check for a level cap
Compare the current level of the survivor or tame with the cap that applies to that character, creature, server mode, and any progression rules in use. A capped entity can still appear beside XP-generating activity while gaining no additional passive XP. Check the tame itself, not merely the rider: a survivor may still gain XP while a maximum-level creature cannot.

If the bar is full or the entity is at its limit, do not treat a multiplier increase as a fix. Confirm the cap first, then verify that you are watching the intended recipient. If a supposedly uncapped survivor fails the dismounted harvest-and-craft test, proceed to settings and build checks.
Verify XP settings for your game mode
Dedicated servers
Inspect the server configuration for the global XPMultiplier, the general GenericXPMultiplier, and any action-specific XP multipliers. The official server-configuration documentation lists XPMultiplier with a default of 1.0. A value of 1 provides the same experience amounts as single-player and official public servers, according to that documentation.
Values below 1 reduce awards. A value of 0, or conflicting custom settings, can make gains look absent. Check every relevant multiplier rather than assuming the global value controls every action. Save the intended configuration, restart or reload the server as required by its administration method, and repeat the controlled test.
Single-player and Host/Local
Open the game’s Host/Local Settings and inspect the XP controls in both the Basic and Advanced sections. Menu labels and available controls differ by platform and mode, so do not assume a console, PC, and hosted session expose identical options. Confirm that you are editing the settings for the world you are actually launching.
Write down the original values before changing them. Change one relevant setting at a time, launch the world, and repeat the same harvest or craft action. This makes it possible to identify an action-specific override instead of masking the cause by changing several rates at once.

Because the menus and server configuration differ, the same symptom can require different checks in single-player, Host/Local, and dedicated environments.
Use Explorer Notes as a deliberate diagnostic
Explorer Notes provide a large XP award and a temporary experience multiplier. The documented boosts are 2x or 4x; two different boosts can stack to 8x. The boost is useful as a test only if you verify that it activated and then perform a direct survivor action.
- Collect an Explorer Note while watching for the visible multiplier timer or indicator.
- Confirm that the timer is active before doing anything else.
- Remain dismounted and immediately harvest a resource or craft a simple item.
- Watch the survivor bar and compare the result with the same action performed without the note.
If the note animation appears but the controlled action still produces no survivor XP, check the recipient, level cap, multipliers, and software build. Do not assume that collecting a note retroactively applies its bonus to an earlier mount kill or to an entity that cannot gain passive XP.
Update the game before altering saves
ARK’s XP behavior has changed across patches. The official changelog records a mounted XP-reset issue fixed in patch 171.6 and advises earning survivor XP after dismounting. It also records that patch 172.3 added 50% of mount XP to the human character. Those dated changes explain why advice written for an older build may not match a current session.

Update the client and, where you administer one, the dedicated server. Make sure both sides are on compatible builds, then repeat the same dismounted harvest-and-craft test. Updating is especially important when:

- XP stopped working after a server migration or version change.
- The failure happens only while riding.
- Other players on the same server report different XP behavior.
- A note, mount, or survivor receives an unexpected amount after a patch.
Back up or copy the relevant save before making configuration changes. A version update and a controlled retest are safer first steps than repeatedly editing progression data.

“My survivor’s XP bar does not move”
Dismount, harvest one nearby resource, and craft one simple item. If neither action gives XP, inspect the survivor’s level, then XPMultiplier, GenericXPMultiplier, and action-specific settings for the active mode. Verify that the world is using the settings you edited and update the client and server before retesting.
“My tame is not getting XP”
Check whether the tame is at its maximum level and whether it is ridden. Maximum-level creatures do not gain passive XP. If it is not capped, determine whether XP is being credited to the survivor, a different tame, or another eligible player. Test the survivor dismounted first, then test the tame under the same settings.

Do not use a mount kill as the first diagnostic because mount and survivor awards can differ. Dismount and perform a direct harvest or craft. If survivor XP works on foot, the original result was a recipient or mount-distribution issue. If the behavior matches the historical mounted-XP failure, update the server and client and retest.
“An Explorer Note gave no XP”
Verify the temporary 2x or 4x indicator, then perform a direct action while dismounted. A note’s boost is temporary; collecting it does not prove that a later shared or mount action credited your survivor. If the timer is absent, treat the collection as unsuccessful and check the note interaction and current build before drawing conclusions.
“XP works for one activity but not another”
That pattern points to an action-specific multiplier or an activity whose XP recipient differs from the survivor. Keep the working action as a control, inspect the setting tied to the failing action, and change only that setting before repeating both tests.

Historical rate events are not proof of a current setting
Studio Wildcard announced permanent double harvesting, experience, and taming rates in 2016. That announcement is a dated rate change, not evidence that every platform, map, or privately configured server currently uses a doubled XP value. For a present-day diagnosis, rely on the values displayed in Host/Local Settings or the active server configuration, and record the build and mode alongside them.

What to record if the problem remains
A useful report lets an administrator or support team reproduce the exact test. Include:
- Platform and game edition.
- Map name.
- Single-player, Host/Local, official server, or unofficial dedicated server.
- Client and server build numbers.
- Whether the missing XP affects the survivor, a ridden tame, an unridden tame, or a tribe member.
- The current level and whether the entity may be capped.
- The values of
XPMultiplier,GenericXPMultiplier, and any action-specific multipliers you can inspect. - The exact controlled action used: dismounted harvest, simple craft, Explorer Note test, or another documented source.
- Whether an Explorer Note timer appeared and whether another player or tame gained the XP.
These details separate a level-cap limit from a recipient mismatch, a local menu override, a server configuration, and a version-specific bug without requiring destructive save edits.
