If your ARK: Survival Ascended server shows a different build from your game client, players may see a version-mismatch message or be unable to join. The reliable repair sequence is to update the client, stop the server, update or validate the dedicated-server files, and start the server only after SteamCMD finishes successfully. Back up the save and configuration first, because validation repairs program files but does not verify the world data.

A mismatch does not, by itself, mean that your world is corrupted or that you should wipe it. If a hosting provider has not released the patch yet, waiting for its rollout is the correct fix.

What an ARK server version mismatch means
A dedicated server and every connecting client must be on compatible builds. After a patch, Steam can update the client before the server, the server before the client, or neither copy if the update command targets the wrong installation. The result is usually described as ARK server version mismatch, dedicated server not updating, or players cannot join after a patch.
The error identifies a software-version disagreement, not save damage. A server can advertise an older build even when SteamCMD reported success if your launch script starts a second installation, if the update stopped for lack of disk space, or if the host has not deployed the patch to rented servers.

Public guidance on the exact compatibility rule is not fully consistent. Community reports say some minor updates tolerate a temporary difference, while major updates generally require both sides to update. One report treated client build 47.4 and server build 47.2 as normal during a transition; that is an anecdote, not an official rule. Treat the server-list version and the client’s current version as the practical check, and update both whenever a patch is available.
Do these checks before changing the server
Back up the complete game state
Stop or schedule a maintenance window before making a backup. Save the world data, tribe data, player data, and configuration files. Keep the backup outside the live server directory so a failed update cannot overwrite both copies. The ArkToolbox update guidance specifically distinguishes these files from the installed program files: SteamCMD validation can replace damaged binaries, but it does not test whether your world save is intact.

- Copy tribe and player data.
- Copy server and gameplay configuration files.
- Record the active map, mods, launch arguments, and the folder used by your production start script.
Do not restore the backup merely because a mismatch appears. Restore only if a freshly updated and validated server still fails on the same build and you have ruled out a client, path, login, storage, or rollout problem.
Confirm which installation is actually running
Find the executable or launch script used to start the live server, then compare its directory with the directory that SteamCMD updates. Community reports describe a common failure mode in which SteamCMD updates a second copy while the production script continues launching the old copy. The advertised build therefore never changes, even though the update command appears to complete.

Check scheduled tasks, service definitions, control-panel startup fields, and shell or batch scripts for an old path. Make the update and the launch process point to the same installation before trying another patch.
Check free disk space
A full drive can stop an update or leave a partial installation. Verify free space on the volume that contains the server files and on any temporary-storage volume used by SteamCMD. If space is low, stop the server, remove only known-unneeded files or move backups elsewhere, then run the update again. Never delete save, tribe, player, or configuration files as a shortcut.
Standard repair procedure for a self-hosted server
Follow these steps in order. The order matters: updating only one side, or restarting while SteamCMD is still writing files, can preserve the mismatch.
- Update the client completely. On each affected computer, let Steam finish every ARK update before launching the game. On a console, allow the system update to finish, then restart the console. If Steam shows a queued download, paused download, or pending restart, resolve it first.
- Restart Steam or the console. The Supercraft Host troubleshooting sequence includes a client restart after the patch. This clears a client that is still holding an older build in memory or has not refreshed its install state.
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly. Use the host panel’s stop action or the same service control you normally use. Do not run an update while the server process is writing the save.
- Run a full SteamCMD update and validation. For the dedicated-server target covered by the cited guides, the command is:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2430930 validate +quit
Run it from the SteamCMD installation that controls the live server, or otherwise specify the live installation in the way your existing setup requires. Let the process reach a clean completion; closing the window early can leave an incomplete patch. - Read the result instead of trusting the exit alone. Confirm that SteamCMD downloaded or checked the expected files and did not stop at a login error, disk-space error, network failure, or path pointing to another copy. Validation takes longer than a plain update because it compares installed program files. It does not validate the world save.
- Start the server only after SteamCMD has finished. Starting early can lock files or make the control panel report an old build. Once the update is complete, start the server normally and wait for it to finish booting.
- Compare the advertised server version with the client. Refresh the in-game server list and check the version shown for the server. Test with one fully updated client before inviting the rest of the players.
A validation is useful when an update was interrupted, files may be damaged, or the server reports an unexpected build. For a routine patch on a healthy installation, one guide says validation is not required every time; a plain update is faster. Use the comparison below to choose.

Full validation or a plain update?
| Option | What it does | When to choose it | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain update | Downloads the files needed for the newer server build. | A normal patch on a known-good installation with sufficient disk space. | It does not prove that older program files are undamaged. |
Update with validate |
Downloads the update and checks installed program files, replacing files that fail validation. | An interrupted update, unexplained build report, suspected missing files, or a fresh troubleshooting attempt. | It does not inspect or repair the world, tribe, player, or configuration data. |
Both options require the server to be stopped and the client to be updated. A validation can take substantially longer, so do not interpret a long period of file checking as proof that it is stuck unless the process has actually stopped producing progress or reports an error.
Use the correct Steam app target
The dedicated-server command above uses app ID 2430930. Steam community game pages may show app ID 2399830, which is a different identifier. Substituting the community-page ID into a server update command can update the wrong product or produce no useful change. Copy the server app ID exactly as shown in the command.
Command order can also matter in real-world setups. A user report described a silent no-op when the installation directory was placed before login arguments. Keep the command structure intact, authenticate first, and use the directory settings expected by your SteamCMD wrapper or host panel. If your wrapper rewrites arguments, inspect the final command it actually runs rather than the template displayed in its interface.
When SteamCMD says it is not updating
Anonymous login fails
The cited guides say anonymous login normally works for the dedicated-server app, but Steam community reports describe periods when an account that owns the game was required. This is unresolved and can change with Steam-side authentication. Try anonymous login first. If Steam rejects it, use a Steam account that owns the relevant game, subject to your organization’s security policy, and do not put credentials in a publicly readable script.

The command completes but the version does not change
- Recheck the production path and the SteamCMD target; a second installation is the most important path-related failure mode reported by administrators.
- Confirm the server was stopped before the update and restarted only after completion.
- Check free disk space on every volume involved.
- Run the same command with validation after making a fresh backup.
- Refresh the server list after startup rather than relying on a cached listing.
The update stops or repeatedly retries
Record the visible error, then correct the specific condition before retrying. A full drive, network interruption, rejected login, or a damaged SteamCMD installation requires a different remedy. One user reported success after downloading a fresh copy of the official SteamCMD ZIP and running the update again. Treat that as a recovery step when the SteamCMD client itself appears broken, not as a substitute for checking the server path and backup.
The server starts but players still cannot join
Verify that the server list advertises the same build as the updated client. If it does, test with a client that has restarted Steam and completed all downloads. If the advertised build is still old, stop the server and repeat the path, disk-space, and validation checks. If the host’s build is newer than a client that has not yet received the patch, update the client rather than rolling the server back.
Hosted servers and delayed rollouts
With a rented server, the provider controls when the dedicated-server files become available. A control panel may offer an update button, an automatic-maintenance setting, or a version selector; the exact labels vary. Use the panel’s stop function, create the provider’s backup, run its full update or validation option, and start the server only after the panel reports completion. Confirm that the selected instance and map are the ones players actually use.
If the provider has not rolled out the patch, a mismatch can persist even though your client is current. A forum user reported that a patch was not yet available to personal servers; that is a single report, but rollout lag is technically plausible. Contact the provider or wait for its deployment rather than repeatedly restarting, wiping, or restoring the world. Updating a second time cannot install files the provider has not released to that service.
Self-hosting gives you control over patch timing and the SteamCMD command, but also makes path, disk, authentication, and backup management your responsibility. A host control panel reduces command-line work but leaves you dependent on its rollout schedule and backup implementation. In either case, the safety rule is the same: preserve the save, update the correct installation, and verify the advertised build after startup.
Do not confuse a mismatch with save corruption
A version error alone is not evidence that the world is damaged. Wiping the world or restoring an old backup can destroy progress while leaving the underlying version disagreement untouched. Keep the live save in place while you work through the non-destructive checks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Consider a restore only after all of the following are true:
- The client is fully updated and Steam or the console has been restarted.
- The server was stopped before updating.
- The correct production installation was updated.
- SteamCMD completed an update and, when needed, a validation.
- Disk space and authentication problems have been ruled out.
- The host has confirmed that its patch rollout is complete.
If the server then fails with a data-specific error on the same build, use the backup made before the update and keep the failed copy for diagnosis. Do not overwrite your only backup with a second attempt.
Major and minor patches: how cautious to be
Search summaries of Studio Wildcard patch discussions use both “Major” and “Minor” labels. Check the label attached to the actual patch before deciding whether a temporary mismatch might be tolerated. Community anecdotes about minor-version tolerance are not a guarantee, and a major update should be treated as requiring the client and server to move together.
A Supercraft Host guide also mentions a planned Unreal Engine 5.8 upgrade on October 28, 2026, and a version-91 change to dedicated-server boot behavior. The guide’s dates and build details do not line up cleanly, and no official confirmation was retrieved. Do not schedule maintenance from that date alone. Verify the release announcement in Steam or on the official ARK site when the patch is actually announced; if the engine upgrade occurs, expect a coordinated client-and-server update rather than a harmless minor mismatch.

A compact decision checklist
- Client is older: finish the client download, restart Steam or the console, then test again.
- Server is older and self-hosted: back up, stop the server, run the SteamCMD command with app ID 2430930, and restart after a clean completion.
- Server is older and hosted: use the provider’s update or validation control; if the patch is not deployed, wait.
- SteamCMD reports success but the listing is unchanged: check the production path, disk space, command order, and whether the server was restarted from the updated copy.
- Anonymous login is rejected: try an owning Steam account, while protecting credentials.
- Files appear damaged or an update was interrupted: make a fresh backup and run validation.
- You are considering a wipe: stop; a mismatch alone does not justify deleting the world.
