Both Argos CI and Percy integrate with Playwright, but they fit different existing workflows. Argos’s documented path adds a reporter and explicit argosScreenshot() calls; Percy supports percySnapshot() and a documented drop-in route for existing toHaveScreenshot() assertions. Choose by how your team wants to establish baselines, review changes, gate pull requests, and debug failures—not by headline price alone.
How Argos and Percy connect to Playwright
Argos: reporter plus explicit snapshot calls
Argos’s Playwright quickstart installs @argos-ci/playwright, adds the Argos reporter to the Playwright configuration, then calls argosScreenshot(page, "homepage") where a test should capture a page. CI uploads use an ARGOS_TOKEN; the quickstart also notes GitHub Actions OIDC or tokenless authentication as options. See the Argos Playwright Quickstart.
For pull-request comparisons, Argos says a build on the default branch must first establish a baseline. Until that exists, pull-request builds are marked orphan. Plan that initial default-branch run as part of setup rather than treating the first PR as a normal comparison.
The quickstart also documents uploading Playwright failure screenshots and traces when Playwright’s corresponding recording options are enabled. Argos’s product page describes deterministic pixel diffing and PR review features; those are vendor descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Argos product page.

Percy: explicit snapshots or an existing-assertion route
Percy’s Playwright package documents percySnapshot(page, name), run under percy exec with a project token. It also documents a drop-in configuration that routes existing Playwright expect(...).toHaveScreenshot() assertions into Percy without changing the assertion calls. The README says this drop-in requires @playwright/test 1.49 or later, so check the installed version before adopting it. Percy Playwright package.
In the drop-in mode, Percy’s documentation says the visual verdict moves to its review UI and describes an optional CI reporter gate that fails on changes. The README also describes behavior for an empty project and committed Playwright baseline PNGs; test baseline seeding in a disposable project before routing a production suite through it.

Which workflow is the better fit?
| Decision point | Argos CI | Percy |
|---|---|---|
| Snapshot code | Documented quickstart adds reporter and explicit argosScreenshot() calls. |
Use percySnapshot(), or the documented drop-in route for existing toHaveScreenshot() assertions. |
| Baseline setup | Quickstart says a default-branch build establishes the baseline for normal PR comparisons; earlier PR builds are orphan. | README describes empty-project handling and committed Playwright baseline PNGs. Verify the behavior in a disposable project before adoption. |
| PR verdict and gate | Quickstart describes a pull-request check and review/approval flow. | Drop-in documentation describes review in Percy and an optional reporter gate that fails on changes. |
| Debugging evidence | Quickstart documents Playwright failure screenshots and traces when recording is configured. | The reviewed package documentation describes snapshot and review flow; it does not establish equivalent trace-upload behavior. That is not evidence that Percy lacks the capability. |
Estimate migration from actual tests
Count where screenshots are captured, which tests use toHaveScreenshot(), and whether tests run in multiple workers or machines. Percy’s drop-in may preserve existing assertion calls, while Argos’s documented route calls for explicit helper calls. Neither fact alone predicts migration effort: framework versions, fixtures, custom snapshot wrappers, and CI configuration matter.

Decide whether diffs block merges
Set the policy before turning on a CI gate. If visual changes should block a merge, test the accepted-change path as well as the failure path: reviewers need to know how approval updates the baseline and how the next build consumes it. If changes are initially advisory, keep the check visible without making it a merge blocker until the team has a stable review routine.
Stabilize rendering before comparing vendors
Visual diffs are meaningful only when captures are reproducible. Argos’s quickstart recommends disabling LCD text and font hinting in Chromium to reduce differences between developer machines and CI. Percy documents capture options including full-page capture, freezing animated images, custom CSS, and ignored regions. For either service, standardize fonts, browser environment, animation behavior, and dynamic test data; otherwise environmental changes can look like product regressions.

What the published prices do—and do not—tell you
Argos materials show $100/month for Argos and $599/month for Percy on the Argos comparison page. The page does not establish when those price figures were captured. An Argos-authored article by co-founder and CEO Greg Bergé, published August 11, 2026, describes Argos Pro at $100/month with 35,000 screenshots included and calls $599/month Percy’s cheapest known tier, with the figures described as of July 2026. The article says Percy no longer publishes pricing. These are time-sensitive vendor claims, not independently verified quotes. Argos pricing article.

A practical selection and rollout checklist
- Inventory the suite: record Playwright version, screenshot assertions and helper wrappers, CI provider, and whether tests are distributed.
- Test the baseline lifecycle: for Argos, run a default-branch build before expecting ordinary PR comparisons. For Percy’s drop-in, test empty-project and committed-baseline behavior in a disposable project.
- Run a representative pull request: check where diffs appear, who can review them, and whether the CI result is advisory or blocking.
- Exercise debugging: deliberately produce a visual change and a test failure, then inspect the available diff and artifacts. For Argos trace and failure screenshot uploads, ensure the relevant Playwright recording settings are on.
- Stabilize capture conditions: align browser, fonts, animation policy, and test data across local and CI runs.
- Recheck commercial terms: confirm current plan availability, included screenshot volume, and overage rules directly with each vendor before committing.
Or skip the browser setup
For one-off captures, previews, or automation that needs an image or PDF rather than a pull-request visual-regression workflow, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request and bills only clean shots. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Argos or Percy’s baseline-review workflow. See ScreenshotNeo.
Example cURL call (replace the URL with the page to capture):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
