Neither is universally better. Memberships pay recurring monthly amounts from viewers who join and stay; ads can earn from a wider audience, but YouTube does not guarantee an ad will serve in every slot or to every viewer. Compare the actual net membership receipts and live-stream and replay ad revenue for your channel over the same period. You can use both.
How memberships and ads earn money
Memberships: recurring payments tied to perks
YouTube channel memberships let viewers make recurring monthly payments in exchange for channel-specific perks. That makes the payment mechanism recurring, not the income guaranteed: earnings depend on how many viewers join, how long they remain members, and the cost and effort of providing perks. YouTube does not publish a membership conversion rate specific to 24/7 streams. See YouTube’s live monetization overview.

Ads: potential earnings across more viewers
Monetized live streams can use pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads. Ads may reach viewers who do not become members, but an enabled ad slot is not a guaranteed impression. YouTube Help states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Actual delivery and revenue depend on what happens with your channel’s audience and streams; there is no reliable universal ad estimate for a 24/7 channel. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance explains the available formats and controls.

- Memberships: review member receipts, cancellations or retention, and the work or expense of delivering perks.
- Ads: use YouTube Analytics’ Live filter to examine ad revenue from live streams and replays. Consider how ad delivery and frequency affect viewing on your channel.
- Overall decision: weigh net revenue, how stable it is, how many viewers each source can reach, perk workload, and viewer experience. Membership receipts and ad revenue can change over time, so continue monitoring both.
YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries in January 2024. This is YouTube’s comparison of ad settings, not a comparison of ads with memberships, and it does not promise the same result for an individual channel or a continuous stream. YouTube Help gives the statistic and its scope.
Can you use memberships and ads together?
Yes. They are not mutually exclusive revenue sources. YouTube says automatic live mid-rolls can limit ad disruption to channel members, pause mid-rolls temporarily for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, and Stickers, and snooze ads during high-engagement moments. These controls may help balance ad monetization and the member experience, but they do not establish a universally best ad frequency or guarantee a particular revenue result. Review the current live-stream ad controls before choosing settings.

- For Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue: accept the Watch Page Monetization Module.
- For memberships and other fan-funding revenue: accept the Commerce Product Module and turn on the individual feature. YouTube notes that creators who already signed the Commerce Product Addendum do not need the new module.
- For live mid-rolls: YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls and offers low, medium, and high frequency settings. Scheduled intervals and manual insertion are also available. YouTube says scheduled or manual settings may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode; that does not establish which option will produce the best net result for your channel.
- To assess outcomes: use the Live filter in YouTube Analytics for ad revenue from streams and replays, then compare it with membership receipts over the same period.
YouTube also mentions an Elgato Stream Deck plugin as an optional way to insert ads during long broadcasts. It is not a requirement to run ads and is not evidence of higher revenue.
