Compare performance near the router with performance in the problem area, then work through placement, mesh links, interference and wired connections.
First, find out what is actually slow
Wi-Fi performance and internet service performance are connected, but they are not the same thing. A slow result can reflect the device, its distance from the router, the band it is using, walls or other barriers, interference, or the ISP connection. Google’s speed and performance guidance recommends considering these factors rather than assuming the router is at fault.

- On the affected device, check performance near the router and again in the room where it is slow. Keep the test conditions as similar as possible.
- Check another device in the same places. If only one device struggles, the issue may be specific to that device; if several do, look at the connection or coverage.
- If results are below the level you expect from your service, contact your ISP to check the connection before replacing Wi-Fi equipment.
A strong Wi-Fi signal does not guarantee that the ISP connection is delivering the expected service, and an ISP-side slowdown will not be fixed by adding a mesh point.
Improve the router’s position
Place the router in an open, central location where practical, rather than behind furniture or in a cupboard. Elevating it and reducing nearby obstructions may help the signal reach more of the home. The best position depends on the home’s size, construction, layout and where people use Wi-Fi; Google’s placement guidance explains why there is no single ideal spot for every home.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Move the router only as far as the modem connection and cabling allow. After repositioning, repeat the tests in the rooms that were slow. A change that improves one area may not improve every area equally.
Understand the trade-off between Wi-Fi bands
Wi-Fi bands differ in range and compatibility. The FCC says that 5 GHz connections are faster but cover a shorter range than 2.4 GHz. Google notes that 2.4 GHz reaches farther than 5 or 6 GHz, that devices may choose a band automatically, and that some smart-home devices support only 2.4 GHz. See Google’s band guidance.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
In practice, a device farther from the router may have a more reliable connection on a longer-range band, while a nearby compatible device may use a faster one. Many routers manage band selection automatically, so do not assume that manually changing a setting will help. If a particular device cannot connect, check its supported bands and the router’s compatibility instructions.
Place mesh points where they can still reach the network
A mesh point cannot solve a dead zone if it is itself placed where its connection to the main router or another point is poor. Put it between the weak area and the nearest working point, in an open location and close enough to maintain a reliable upstream link.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Run the mesh system’s connection test. For Google Wifi systems, Google says the mesh test measures the connection between the router or primary Wifi point and additional points.
- If a point has a weak connection, move it closer to the primary point or nearest well-connected point rather than deeper into the dead zone.
- Keep the point in the open, then run the test again and check performance in the problem area.
A mesh point with a weak link can become a bottleneck. The right number and placement of points depend on the home and its construction; do not treat a product’s advertised coverage or a generic point count as a guarantee.
Check for interference, then test a wired connection
Nearby Wi-Fi traffic and household electronics can contribute to interference. If you suspect a particular source, move it or switch it off temporarily and compare results. Treat this as a test, not a universal fix: the effect depends on the equipment and environment.

- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
For a stationary, high-demand device near the router, Ethernet may be the more reliable answer. The FCC’s home internet connectivity guidance says a direct Ethernet connection can provide the highest speeds and alleviate Wi-Fi congestion. A cable is useful only if it can be routed safely and the device and router have suitable ports.

Know when new hardware is justified
Consider equipment only after checking the ISP connection, device capability and placement. A router upgrade may help when the router or client device is the limiting factor. A mesh system or range extender may help with a persistent coverage gap, but an added point still needs a sufficiently strong connection and suitable placement.
