Backblaze’s Q1 2026 data does not prove that bigger hard drives are inherently more reliable. It does show that, in the company’s production fleet that quarter, drives of 20TB and larger had a lower reported annualized failure rate (AFR) than the fleet overall: 0.85% versus 1.24%. That’s a useful reason to compare exact drive models rather than assume capacity predicts reliability—but it is not a home-PC or NAS buying test.
What Backblaze’s 341,000-drive study found
In a release published July 9, 2026, Backblaze said its Drive Stats program analyzed more than 341,000 production hard drives across its global storage cloud. For Q1 2026, it reported a 1.24% fleet-wide AFR, down from 1.42% in Q1 2025. Its 20TB-and-larger drives had a 0.85% AFR across more than 86,000 units. Backblaze also reported a 1.39% lifetime AFR across hundreds of millions of drive-days. Read Backblaze’s Q1 2026 Drive Stats release.

AFR is an annualized fleet or model statistic for a reporting period. It is not the percentage chance that a particular drive will fail during the coming year, nor a promise about how long any individual unit will last.

This quarter’s figures do not support a simple rule that larger drives fail more often: Backblaze’s 20TB+ group had a lower reported AFR than its full fleet. But the comparison describes Backblaze’s deployed equipment and operating conditions, not a randomized sample of retail drives used in homes. It also does not show that capacity caused the difference or establish a universal reliability ranking by capacity.

Backblaze reported model-level differences too. Its 22TB WDC WUH722222ALE6L4 had a 0.38% AFR, with more than 45,000 units in the fleet. Its 24TB Toshiba MG11ACA24TE had a 0.22% AFR, but Backblaze identified that result as coming from early deployment and said it would track the model as the cohort matures. That 0.22% figure should not be read as a proven long-term rate.
The release also noted zero failures among 1,026 HGST HUH728080ALE600 8TB drives and one failure among 1,087 Seagate ST12000NM000J 12TB drives in its quarter’s highest-performing model list. These are observations from Backblaze’s fleet, not guarantees or direct comparisons of consumer products.

Why fleet reliability numbers do not settle a consumer purchase
- The population is different. Backblaze reports on its own production fleet, not every retail HDD or a representative sample of drives in desktop PCs and NAS systems.
- One quarter is not a lifetime. AFR annualizes failures for a stated period; it does not forecast an individual drive’s lifespan. Backblaze’s remaining original 4TB HGST drives fell below the report’s reporting-table thresholds after more than 106 months of service, but that observed fleet history is not a lifespan estimate for a new purchase.
- New cohorts have limited history. The early-deployment caveat on the 24TB Toshiba model matters: a low observed rate can change as a model accumulates more service time.
- Some failures are outside the dataset. Backblaze says drives that fail before completing their first day in production are not captured; it describes such day-one failures as uncommon given its qualification process.
- The report does not cover your buying constraints. It does not establish current retail price, warranty terms, noise, power use, workload suitability, interface, or compatibility with a particular PC or NAS.
How to choose a hard drive without overreading the study
- Compare exact model numbers. Brand and capacity alone are too broad. If reliability data is available, check which model it covers, how many drives are represented, the reporting period, and whether the model has been deployed long enough for the result to be informative.
- Match the drive to its workload. Check the manufacturer’s workload rating and intended use. A desktop drive, a NAS drive and a drive designed for another operating environment are not interchangeable just because they share a capacity.
- Verify device compatibility. Confirm physical size, interface, supported capacity and any NAS or system compatibility requirements for the exact drive and device.
- Compare warranty and current cost. Use current product and retailer information to check warranty coverage and calculate price per terabyte. The Backblaze release does not establish either for retail models.
- Keep a separate backup. Even a drive with a low observed AFR can fail. Reliability statistics are not a substitute for an independent copy of important files.
What the study proves—and what it doesn’t
It proves only a narrow, useful point: in Backblaze’s Q1 2026 production fleet, the 20TB+ cohort recorded a lower AFR than the fleet overall, and individual models had different observed results. It does not prove that larger retail hard drives are inherently safer, that capacity causes reliability, or that one model will outlast another in your PC or NAS. Use the figures as one context for model-level comparison, then make the purchase decision from the exact product’s workload fit, compatibility, warranty and current price.
