Repair is usually worth considering when a waterproof jacket has a local fault or has stopped beading water on the outside. Clean and dry it according to its care label before assuming the waterproof membrane has failed. A small tear, broken zipper or detached seam tape may be repairable; widespread delamination or damage that prevents the jacket from working as intended is a stronger case for replacement.
First identify what has failed
Outer fabric is wetting out
If the jacket’s face fabric looks soaked—often first at cuffs or under pack straps—but water is not entering through a visible hole or seam, it may have “wetted out.” Dirt and body oils can reduce the durable water repellent (DWR) coating, allowing the outer fabric to saturate. That can make the jacket feel cold and clammy even while its waterproof membrane still blocks liquid water. Patagonia explains the distinction this way: “DWR is an extra protective coating; the membrane is the workhorse.” Patagonia’s care guidance and GORE-TEX care guidance both recommend care before concluding that the garment has failed.

A specific hole or tear leaks
A small puncture or tear can often be covered temporarily with an adhesive fabric patch. GORE-TEX describes this as an immediate, non-permanent fix to preserve waterproof integrity until the garment can reach an authorized repair center. Avoid an unsealed sewn repair: needle holes can compromise waterproof protection unless they are properly sealed.

These are reasonable candidates for a professional assessment when the damage is localized. The GORE-TEX UK repair service lists tears, broken zippers, detached seam tape and worn fabric among possible repair jobs. The service’s scope and availability are regional, and the provider must assess the specific garment.

The inside is peeling or the laminate is delaminating
Peeling of the inner lining from the laminate, especially across a broad area, is a serious warning sign. The GORE-TEX UK service excludes excessive delamination, and Patagonia’s UK/Europe repair information says delamination that causes the interior lining to peel cannot be repaired. DWR treatment cannot fix this kind of structural damage; ask the maker or repair provider whether the jacket can be restored before spending money on it.
Try cleaning and reproofing before replacing
- Check the garment’s care label. Use its washing and drying instructions, and check the manufacturer’s care guidance if you are unsure which products or heat settings are suitable.
- Wash and dry the jacket as directed. GORE-TEX recommends washing and drying with heat as the first care step. Follow the jacket’s own instructions rather than applying heat that its label prohibits.
- Test whether water beads. If beading returns, the problem was likely the DWR performance rather than a failed membrane. If water still does not bead after washing and drying, reproofing may help. Patagonia recommends a PFAS-free option and names Storm Eco Proofer; product formulations and instructions can change, so check the current treatment label and confirm compatibility with your jacket.
- Reassess for leaks. If water enters through a particular seam, hole or damaged component, pursue a repair assessment rather than repeatedly applying DWR. Reproofing restores water repellency at the surface; it does not repair a tear, failed zipper or delaminated laminate.
Patagonia’s guidance says, “If water still doesn’t bead up on your shell after a wash and dry, then it’s time to re-proof it.” The sequence matters: washing first can remove the grime that interferes with DWR, and it avoids treating surface wetting as proof that the membrane is leaking.

When is repair the better choice?
Repair is a strong option when the fault is limited, the rest of the jacket remains in good condition, and a provider believes it can restore the performance you need. That may mean a patch for a minor tear, or professional work on a zipper, seam tape or worn section. Ask whether the repair is temporary or permanent, what waterproof performance to expect afterward, and whether the provider accepts your brand and model.

For a small tear, a patch kit can be useful in the field or while arranging service, but treat it as temporary unless the manufacturer or repairer confirms otherwise. For structural repairs, do not assume a service covers every jacket or every type of damage: get an assessment and quote before committing.

When does replacement make more sense?
Replacement becomes more sensible when delamination is extensive, the garment has broad deterioration, or the damage cannot be repaired or restored to the function required for its intended use. GORE-TEX defines a product as beyond useful life when it is damaged or worn beyond the possibility of restoration to fully functional waterproof, windproof and breathable condition. That is a more useful test than age alone: a jacket’s remaining value depends on its condition and the demands of the activity for which you need it.
If the jacket is still sound but no longer suits your use, compare it with a replacement that meets the same needs. If the repair would leave it unreliable for the conditions you face, the lowest quote is not necessarily the best value.

Compare the real repair and replacement options
There is no universal repair-cost percentage that says when every jacket should be replaced. Compare the actual quote and likely result with the cost and suitability of a replacement. Include shipping, turnaround, the jacket’s overall condition, and how well the repair is expected to restore waterproof function.
- Repair quote: Ask what work is included and whether further damage discovered during inspection could change the price.
- Shipping and time: Add round-trip shipping and consider whether you can be without the jacket during the repair.
- Expected result: Confirm whether the repair restores waterproof protection, is mainly cosmetic, or is only a temporary fix.
