Are Valheim Servers Free? Free vs Paid Hosting Options (2026)

Godlike.Host is listed first among four paid Valheim hosting examples, while self-hosting still requires your own computer, power, network configuration and maintenance. This guide explains free Valheim server software, networking and how the remaining paid plans compare.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Godlike.Host is listed first here for managed Valheim hosting, with its own game panel, free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day with restore. Valheim’s dedicated-server software is free to download from Steam’s Tools library, but running a server is not automatically cost-free. With self-hosting, you provide the computer, electricity, internet connection, configuration and maintenance. A managed host charges a recurring fee in exchange for an always-on machine, a control panel and services such as backups, support, mods and crossplay. The right choice depends on whether your group values the lowest cash cost or the least administration.

What “free Valheim server” actually means

Iron Gate distributes Valheim Dedicated Server separately from the game through Steam’s Library Tools section. Downloading that application does not create a hosted world for you; it gives you the server software that you must run on a computer you control or rent elsewhere.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A self-hosted server can therefore avoid a hosting subscription. It still consumes resources and time:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Windows or Linux computer must remain powered on whenever friends need access.
  • Your internet connection must accept the traffic required by the server mode you select.
  • You must install updates, edit the launch script, monitor the process and protect or restore the world files.
  • Electricity, hardware purchases, bandwidth upgrades and the value of your setup time can make the total cost higher than the software’s zero-dollar download price.

Managed hosting changes who supplies those resources. You pay a recurring fee for an always-on machine and a web-based management layer. The monthly charge is predictable, while administration, maintenance and some troubleshooting are handled by the provider.

How free self-hosting works

Install the official dedicated-server application

Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide, dated April 11, 2024, directs you to Steam’s Library > Tools area. Install Valheim Dedicated Server, then use the Windows or Linux launch script included with the installation. The script contains the settings that determine the server name, world, password, ports and other startup behavior; edit the supplied file rather than creating an unrelated launcher from scratch.

The guide’s wording describes the purpose well: “Running a dedicated server is a great way to provide a persistent world in which you and your friends can play anytime.” Persistence means the world process continues independently of any one player’s game client—as long as the host machine and server process stay available.

Choose a networking mode

There are two materially different connection paths:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Steam-backend server: Iron Gate’s guide identifies the default port range as 2456–2457. For players outside your home network to connect, the router normally needs inbound port forwarding to the computer running the server. The exact router screens vary by manufacturer, so the important tasks are forwarding the documented range to the correct local machine and allowing the server through that machine’s firewall.
  • Crossplay server: Crossplay sends traffic through a relay server. Outside players do not need inbound port forwarding, which is useful when your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or your router cannot accept the required rule. Relay routing is a different connection path from the Steam backend; select the mode deliberately when editing the launch script.

Port forwarding is not a hosting fee, but it is an administration requirement. A mistake in the internal IP address, firewall rule or forwarded range can make a perfectly running server invisible to friends.

Keep the host available

Self-hosting only feels “always on” while the host computer is on, connected and running the server process. Sleep settings, reboots for operating-system updates, power failures and a changed local IP address can all interrupt access. Someone in the group must be willing to restart the process and correct configuration problems.

What paid Valheim hosting adds

A paid provider allocates a server machine and exposes controls through a panel or web console. The services differ, but the published plans below illustrate the current market snapshots checked on October 15, 2026. Prices are not universal rates: currency, location, billing term, taxes, promotions, slot counts and renewal terms can change.

Provider Published price Published features Important qualification
Godlike.Host See the current plans Valheim server hosting with a Pterodactyl-based game panel, free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, SFTP/FTP access and a built-in mod installer Locations listed include the US West Coast, US East Coast, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, Ukraine, Finland and Singapore.
DatHost €14.90 per month; €8.90 per month with six-month billing; €6.90 per month with yearly billing 10 players, crossplay, one-click world manager, mods/plugins, backups and a 14-day money-back guarantee Currency and term discounts can change; verify the amount at checkout.
GPORTAL $15.59 per 30 days; $42.09 per 90 days; $79.51 per 180 days; a three-day offer from $6.24 10 slots, 50 GB backup space, DDoS protection, ValheimPlus and one-click mods, and crossplay Published prices depend on location and term. The short offer is not a normal monthly equivalent.
Nitrado $16.19 per 30 days; $43.59 per 90 days; $4.09 per three days before the displayed promotion 10 slots, PC/Xbox/PlayStation 5/Switch 2 crossplay and selectable locations The displayed 40% reduction requires promo code DEEPNORTH40; treat the pre-promotion amount as the standard reference, not the sale price.

These figures are provider-published examples, not an independent performance test. Before paying, check the final currency, tax, renewal price, included player slots, server locations, cancellation process and refund conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DatHost

DatHost lists a 10-player plan at €14.90 monthly, with lower monthly figures when you commit to six months (€8.90 per month) or a year (€6.90 per month). Its published feature set includes crossplay, a one-click world manager, mods and plugins, backups and a 14-day money-back guarantee. The longer-term prices exchange flexibility for a lower effective monthly charge, so confirm whether the displayed amount is billed for the full term.

GPORTAL

GPORTAL publishes 10 slots, 50 GB of backup space, DDoS protection, ValheimPlus and one-click mods, plus crossplay. Its examples are $15.59 for 30 days, $42.09 for 90 days and $79.51 for 180 days. A three-day offer from $6.24 is a short-duration promotion, not evidence that a full month costs $6.24. Location and term affect the amount shown.

Nitrado

Nitrado lists 10 slots and selectable locations, with crossplay spanning PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2. The published reference is $16.19 for 30 days or $43.59 for 90 days. A three-day price of $4.09 appears before a displayed 40% promotion that requires the code DEEPNORTH40. Promotions expire or change, so do not use that sale figure as a permanent price.

Self-hosting versus a paid host

Decision factor Self-hosted dedicated server Managed hosting
Recurring hosting bill No hosting subscription for the software itself Recurring fee; published examples above vary by provider and billing term
Hardware and electricity You supply and pay for the computer, power and connection Included in the provider’s service price
Setup Install Steam’s tool, edit the supplied script, configure networking and start the process Usually performed through a provider panel; exact workflow varies
Online availability Depends on your machine, power and internet staying available Designed to run continuously on the provider’s infrastructure
Router work Steam backend normally needs ports 2456–2457 forwarded; Crossplay uses a relay instead Provider handles the server’s network edge; your household router generally is not part of the setup
Backups and restore You must arrange, verify and retain your own world copies Some plans advertise backups or backup storage; confirm retention and restore controls
Mods and plugins You install and maintain them yourself Some panels offer one-click mods or plugin tools, but supported versions and limits vary
Support Your group troubleshoots the operating system, router and server Support is part of the service, subject to the provider’s policy
Location and latency Determined by where your host computer and internet connection are located You can often select a listed region; availability differs by provider

The comparison is not simply “$0 versus $15.” Self-hosting trades money for equipment, availability and technical labor. Hosting trades a recurring fee for convenience and a service-level dependency.

How to set up a free server yourself

  1. Prepare a dedicated machine. Use a Windows or Linux computer that can remain powered on for the times your group wants to play. Decide who has physical or remote access if the process stops.
  2. Install the server tool. In Steam, open Library > Tools, locate Valheim Dedicated Server and install it. This is separate from launching the regular Valheim client.
  3. Open the supplied launch script. Iron Gate provides a Windows and a Linux script. Edit the documented settings for the server name, world, password and selected backend. Keep a backup copy of the original script so you can undo an error.
  4. Select Steam backend or Crossplay. Use the Steam backend when your group can reach the forwarded ports and wants that connection path. Select Crossplay when relay networking is preferable or console and PC players need the provider-supported crossplay path.
  5. Configure access for Steam backend. Forward the default range, 2456–2457, from the router to the host computer and allow the server through its firewall. Reserve the computer’s local address if your router supports that feature, so a reboot does not send the rule to a different device.
  6. Start the server process. Run the edited script and wait for the process to finish its startup messages. Keep the window or service running; closing it stops the dedicated server.
  7. Test from another connection. Have a friend outside your home network try to join. A test from the same LAN cannot prove that internet port forwarding works. If you selected Crossplay, verify that players can connect through the relay without adding inbound router rules.
  8. Record recovery information. Note the world name, script location, router rule and who can restart the machine. Make a separate copy of the world files before experimenting with mods or configuration changes.

The exact command-line syntax and file paths differ between Windows and Linux. Use the launch script and instructions that ship with the Steam tool rather than copying an unrelated command from an older guide.

Common self-hosting problems and fixes

Friends cannot see the server

  • Confirm that the server process is still running and that the world and password settings are valid.
  • For Steam backend, recheck forwarding of ports 2456–2457 to the host’s current local address and verify the operating-system firewall rule.
  • Check whether your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT. If inbound forwarding cannot work, Crossplay’s relay mode avoids the inbound-port requirement.

The server disappears after a reboot

A reboot can change the host’s local address, stop the launch process or leave the computer asleep. Restore the saved router target, restart the supplied script and adjust power settings so the machine does not sleep during scheduled play.

The world is unavailable when the owner is away

This is an inherent self-hosting limitation unless another trusted person can operate the machine. A managed plan is more practical when the group expects access while the usual owner is traveling, working or offline.

A mod or plugin breaks the world

Stop the server, preserve the current world files, then remove or roll back the recently changed component. Managed panels may simplify installation, but they do not eliminate compatibility risk; confirm supported versions and retain backups before applying updates.

Players experience high latency

Latency follows the physical location and network path of the host. A home server may be excellent for nearby friends and poor for a group spread across regions. A paid provider with a selectable location can put the machine closer to most players, although the available regions differ by provider.

Costs people overlook when choosing “free”

  • Electricity: an always-on computer uses power for every hour the world is available. The amount depends on the machine and local electricity rate, so calculate it from your own setup rather than assuming zero.
  • Existing hardware: using a spare computer avoids a purchase; buying one solely for the server converts the subscription you avoided into an upfront cost.
  • Internet service: a connection upgrade may be necessary if the household connection cannot provide the desired reliability or upload capacity.
  • Administration time: installation, router changes, updates, backup checks and recovery after failures are unpaid work.
  • Risk of data loss: without independent world copies, a disk failure or mistaken file change can erase progress. A provider’s advertised backup feature is useful only if you understand its retention and restore process.

These are opportunity costs, not extra Valheim license fees. They matter most when the machine would otherwise be off or when nobody in the group wants to be the administrator.

Which option is cheapest for your group?

Choose self-hosting when

  • Someone already owns a suitable Windows or Linux machine that can stay on.
  • The group is comfortable editing a launch script and, for Steam backend, configuring a router and firewall.
  • Play sessions occur when the owner is present, so occasional downtime is acceptable.
  • You are willing to create and verify your own world backups and handle mod updates.

Choose paid hosting when

  • The world must remain available 24/7, including when the usual host is away.
  • No one wants to administer port forwarding, operating-system updates or a server process.
  • The group needs console/PC crossplay, a selectable server location or provider-managed networking.
  • One-click mods, web file access, offsite backups, DDoS protection or support justify a monthly bill.

Use a hybrid decision

Start self-hosted if you already have the hardware and want to validate the group’s play schedule. Move to a paid plan when interruptions, administration or remote-player latency become recurring problems. Conversely, a group paying for features it never uses can reduce cost by returning to a spare-machine setup, provided someone accepts the maintenance work.

Questions to ask before subscribing

  • Is the advertised amount monthly, per 30 days, or an effective monthly figure under a longer commitment?
  • What is charged at renewal after a promotion or introductory term?
  • How many player slots are included, and are additional slots priced separately?
  • Which PC and console platforms are supported by the provider’s crossplay implementation?
  • How much backup storage is included, how long are copies retained, and can you download or restore them yourself?
  • Which regions are available, and can you move the world later?
  • Are mods and plugins one-click installations, supported uploads, or entirely your responsibility?
  • What are the cancellation, refund and data-export rules?

Answer those questions using the checkout page and current service terms. A low headline price can become less attractive when it excludes backups, uses a distant location or requires a long billing commitment.

Bottom line

Godlike.Host is listed first here for managed Valheim hosting, with its own game panel, free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore and SFTP/FTP access. Valheim servers are free only in the narrow software sense. Iron Gate supplies the dedicated-server application at no subscription cost, but self-hosting still requires your computer, power, network configuration and maintenance. It is the cheapest cash option for a technically comfortable group with spare hardware. Paid hosting is the practical choice for a persistent world, console/PC crossplay, managed backups or support, with DatHost’s €14.90 monthly rate and the other term-dependent plans listed above as provider-published examples.
