USB and 3.5 mm describe different ways to connect headphones, not a sound-quality ranking. USB carries audio digitally to the headphones or an audio device; a conventional 3.5 mm headphone jack supplies an analog signal from the source or an adapter. The headphones, the device’s audio circuitry, compatibility, and the features you need matter more than the connector alone.
What is different about USB and 3.5 mm audio?
A USB audio connection carries audio digitally. Conversion to the analog signal that drives headphone speakers happens somewhere in the audio path, such as inside the headphones or a connected audio device. The USB-IF’s USB Audio Devices Release 4.0 specification, dated October 31, 2025, covers both analog and digital audio data as well as functions such as gain and tone control.

A conventional 3.5 mm headphone connection carries analog audio from the source’s audio circuitry or from an adapter. The connector therefore tells you where the signal enters the headphones, not whether the result will sound better. The quality of the conversion and amplification, the headphone design, and the rest of the audio chain still matter.

Do USB headphones sound better?
There is no general winner based on connector type alone. The official specifications and platform guidance cited here explain how connections and compatibility work; they do not establish that USB headphones sound better in a controlled listening comparison. A well-matched 3.5 mm setup can sound better than a particular USB setup, or the reverse, depending on the specific headphones and audio hardware.

Even a headphone jack’s performance is not uniform across devices. For example, Apple documents DACs, impedance detection, and adaptive output on certain compatible Macs. For the listed models, Apple specifies output of up to 1.25 volts RMS for headphones below 150 ohms and 3 volts RMS for headphones from 150 ohms to 1 kilohm. Those figures describe those Mac jacks; they are not a general measure of 3.5 mm audio quality.
Which connection is more convenient?
| Consideration | USB headphones | 3.5 mm headphones |
|---|---|---|
| Device connection | Need a compatible USB audio connection and a port your device supports. Windows provides a class driver for compliant USB audio devices, but support on other platforms and for specific headset features depends on the device and headset. | Connect directly to a device with a standard headphone jack. If the device has USB-C but no headphone jack, you may need a suitable adapter. |
| Audio path | Audio travels digitally over USB; the specific device and headphone implementation determine how it is converted and amplified. | The source or adapter sends analog audio to the headphones. Jack performance depends on that hardware. |
| Microphone and controls | Check the exact headset and platform. USB audio class support alone does not guarantee that every microphone or control feature works. | Check the plug wiring, device jack, and adapter. Microphone and inline-control compatibility is not universal. |
| Power | Power needs vary by model. Some USB headphones may need or draw power. | A passive wired model can work without a USB connection, but active or wireless models may still need battery power. |
| Best fit | Useful when your device supports USB audio and you want a digital wired connection or features offered by a particular USB headset. | Simple when your device has a headphone jack and you want to use compatible analog headphones. |
Will USB headphones work with your device?
Check the device’s available ports and its support for the specific headset before buying. On Windows, Microsoft documents a USB Audio class driver for compliant devices and says they do not require a proprietary adapter driver. Windows also manages audio endpoints, which can include USB and 3.5 mm outputs; this is Windows guidance, not a guarantee that every feature of every headset works on every platform.

- High-quality stereo sound - powerful 40mm drivers with Deep bass and a wide dynamic range deliver an exceptional listening experience
- Best-in-class comfort - the headphones' padded headband is designed to fit heads of all ages and the foam ear pads provide hours of comfortable use
- 6 foot USB cord - built to be strong enough for heavy use

- Safe listening limit - the maximum output is set to 94Db to prevent hearing loss
For a phone, tablet, or computer without a 3.5 mm jack, Apple documents using a USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone adapter with a compatible USB-C device. If the headphone microphone or inline buttons matter to you, verify that the exact adapter and device support them rather than assuming audio playback support covers every feature.
Can you use both connection types on the same headphones?
Some models offer both, but their behavior is model-specific. Apple’s Beats Studio Pro guidance describes listening over USB-C or 3.5 mm: USB-C listening charges the headphones, while 3.5 mm playback does not require battery power. This example does not establish how other headphones behave; check the manufacturer’s instructions for the model you own.

How should you choose?
- Choose USB if your device supports the headset and you want its particular USB features or need wired audio on a device without a headphone jack.
- Choose 3.5 mm if your device has a compatible jack and you value a direct analog connection or want to keep using existing wired headphones.
- Use an adapter if your device has USB-C but no headphone jack and you want to connect 3.5 mm headphones. Confirm microphone and control support if needed.
- Compare the actual headphones and device when sound quality is the priority. The connector label alone cannot predict which setup will sound better.
