Usually, dead batteries do not mean a smart lock has failed open—but they can leave you unable to enter electronically. Whether you can still get in depends on the exact lock: it may have a mechanical keyway or a documented emergency-power method. Check the model’s manual and act on low-battery warnings rather than assuming every lock has the same backup.
What happens when a smart lock’s batteries run out?
The electronic keypad, motor, or other battery-powered functions may stop responding. The result is model-specific: a lock may still be opened with a physical key, or it may require its documented emergency-power procedure. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal fail-open or fail-locked behavior for all smart locks.

A dead lock battery is also different from a household power outage. Schlage says its residential electronic and smart locks run on batteries and continue to function during a home power outage; however, features that rely on Wi-Fi or cellular communications may be unavailable. Schlage’s power-outage guidance concerns that manufacturer’s products, not every lock.

How you may be able to unlock it
Use the mechanical key, if your lock has one
Some smart locks retain a physical key cylinder. Yale identifies the Assure YRD216 and YRD226 as examples with a mechanical-key backup. Keep the key somewhere accessible to the people who may need it; a key locked inside the home will not help you get in.

Use emergency power only if the model supports it
Certain key-free Yale locks have external terminals that accept a standard 9V battery for temporary power. Yale says the battery provides enough power to operate the lock and unlock the door so you can replace the internal cells; it does not recharge the lock. Its Assure FAQ names the YRD256 as a model that can be powered at front terminals, while the YRD216 and YRD226 use mechanical keys as their fallback. For Yale Keyless Connected, the regional support instructions say to place a 9V battery at the emergency terminal, enter the master code, then press the star button. Replace batteries when the lock warns you
Warnings give you a chance to replace the cells while the lock is still operating. The signal varies by product: Schlage documents low and critically low battery indicators for specified keypad and Touch models, and Yale describes app alerts for referenced Yale Access locks. Check which alerts your lock supports and who receives them; an app notification is useful only if someone sees it. Schlage’s low-battery guidance
For the Yale Access locks covered by its guidance, Yale says a low-battery notification appears at 25% capacity, with more frequent alerts as the batteries near end of life. It recommends replacing all four cells with new, non-rechargeable alkaline AA batteries for those locks. How often should you expect to replace them?
Battery life depends on the model, conditions, and use. Manufacturer estimates are not guarantees for every installation or household.

What to check before you need the backup
- Find the exact make and model, then read its manual’s battery and emergency-entry instructions.
- Confirm whether it has a mechanical keyway, external emergency-power terminals, both, or neither documented in its instructions.
- Check the specified cell size and chemistry, and learn how the lock signals low and critical battery levels.
- If the lock uses an app alert, confirm who receives it and whether the notification is enabled.
- Separate local keypad or key operation from remote features that rely on Wi-Fi, cellular service, or a hub.
Do not assume a 9V battery will work just because another smart lock accepts one. Use only the fallback documented for your model, and replace the internal batteries promptly after using emergency power.
