The dividing line is practical: choose a mini PC for turnkey general-purpose computing, an SBC when a compact Linux computer must connect directly to project hardware, and a microcontroller for lightweight control that does not need Linux.
What does a single-board computer still do best?
An SBC combines a computer’s core components on one board. Raspberry Pi describes its flagship boards as compact computers that run a full Linux operating system and provide common ports. That combination is useful when a project needs Linux software and direct access to hardware interfaces, rather than only a general-purpose desktop.

For example, Raspberry Pi 5’s listed features include a 40-pin GPIO header and a PCIe 2.0 x1 interface, alongside dual micro-HDMI outputs and a microSD slot. These are vendor specifications, not independent performance results; check the exact model and accessory compatibility before building around them. Raspberry Pi’s 2025 industrial presentation describes its M.2 HAT+ as connecting M.2 peripherals, including NVMe drives and AI accelerators.

That board-level access and a familiar project ecosystem are real advantages, but they do not make an SBC the best choice for every small computer. A compact Linux board, a turnkey mini PC, and a microcontroller solve overlapping but distinct problems.
Which device fits the job?
| Task | Candidate to consider | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| General-purpose desktop or home-lab host | Mini PC | Total configured cost, CPU capability, included memory and storage, operating-system and software compatibility, power, noise, and upgradeability. |
| Compact Linux system that connects directly to project hardware | Single-board computer | GPIO and other I/O, board dimensions, power requirements, storage, cooling, software support, and accessory costs. |
| Lightweight sensing, control, or real-time embedded task | Microcontroller | Real-time needs, power, I/O, toolchain, firmware support, and whether the project actually needs a full Linux OS. |
| Product or industrial integration at scale | Compute Module or equivalent system-on-module | Carrier-board design, connectors, storage options, supply and production lifetime, and integration requirements. |
Raspberry Pi distinguishes its flagship SBCs from Compute Modules, which adapt hardware for embedded and industrial integration, and Pico boards, which are microcontrollers rather than Linux computers. Its documentation identifies digital signage, thin clients, and process automation among Compute Module applications. Those categories help clarify the choice; they do not guarantee that a particular board meets a project’s production, performance, or support requirements. Raspberry Pi’s computer hardware documentation and Compute Module documentation describe the product distinctions.
Why do mini PCs look more attractive now?
A mini PC is often the more straightforward option when the goal is simply to run desktop applications, host services, or build a home lab. It may arrive as a more complete general-purpose computer, while an SBC build can require separate decisions about power, storage, cooling, display connections, and peripherals. Compare the complete configuration rather than the board price with the mini PC’s headline price.

A January 6, 2026 Tom’s Hardware comparison reported price parity between similarly configured Raspberry Pi and Intel N100 mini-PC home-lab builds. That is a dated, configuration-specific comparison—not a rule that every mini PC costs the same as, or less than, every SBC. Prices, stock, and memory costs change; the useful lesson is to compare what each configured system includes.
When is the SBC’s extra setup worth it?
Choose an SBC when the project benefits from Linux and direct hardware access together, or when board dimensions, I/O, and an established hardware ecosystem suit the design. For a Pi 5 project, its GPIO header may be central; in another build, storage expansion through a compatible M.2 HAT+ may matter. A mini PC can be the simpler general-purpose host, but it is not automatically a substitute for a board designed to connect into a physical project.

- 【What you Get】You will get 1*Pi 5 8GB Single Board,1*RasTech Case,1*Active Cooler,1*Screwdriver,1*Installation instructions,12-month free warranty, lifetime service, 24-hour prompt and friendly response.
- 【More Connectors】There are two USB 3.0 ports(5Gbps simultaneously) and two USB 2.0 ports, which triple total bandwidth ,support any combination of up to two cameras or displays. Peak SD card performance is doubled through support for the SDR104 high-speed mode. It provides a smooth desktop experience for you. Offer Gigabit Ethernet and a PCIe interface, along with dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0/BLE wireless capability. The RasTech Pi 5 Kit use the new 27W 5.1V 5A USB-C power connector.
- 【 Support Dual 4Kp60 Display 】Each of the two microHDMI sockets can control a 4K display at 60 Hertz, now support HDR, offering super HD video for media streaming projects. RPi 5 is the first RPi model that comes with a PCI Express port (PCIe 2.0 x1 with 500 MB/s) to attach SSDs (requires separate M.2 HAT).
- 【 Excellent Chips And Applications】Pi 5 is a full-size Pi computer using silicon built in-house at Pi. The RP1 “southbridge” provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for Pi 5. Pi 5 is more friendly and convenient in the development of Internet of Things, Web development, machine identification, automatic control and other electronic equipment applications and network.
- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Remember that an SBC is not necessarily a complete desktop package. The required power supply and display cable depend on the model, and storage and input/output peripherals may add to the build. A screen and keyboard are not required for every use: Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance also covers headless configuration over Wi-Fi or Ethernet with remote access. Check the model-specific instructions and choose a suitable power supply before buying accessories. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guide explains desktop equipment and headless setup.
When should a microcontroller replace an SBC?
If a device only needs to read sensors, control outputs, or perform lightweight embedded work, it may not need a general-purpose operating system. Raspberry Pi describes Pico as suitable for real-time control and lightweight embedded projects. A microcontroller can be a better fit when the task’s timing, power, I/O, and firmware requirements align with it; it is not a drop-in replacement when the project depends on Linux applications or services.

In “The future of making,” published by Raspberry Pi Official Magazine, Jeff Geerling forecast that some projects would move from more expensive SBC-based designs toward supported microcontrollers. He said: “That started to happen during the industry-wide parts shortage, but it’s accelerated as more projects show the value of well-supported microcontrollers like the RP2040.” This is his commentary and forecast, not a measured count of projects or proof that the SBC category is shrinking.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is the SBC category actually disappearing?
The available evidence supports a shift in which device fits certain projects, not the disappearance of SBCs. A mini PC can make more sense for a general-purpose host; a microcontroller can make more sense for lightweight control. But a compact Linux computer with GPIO, board-level integration, or a familiar hardware ecosystem remains useful where those features are requirements.

There is no established independent statistic here showing that the SBC category is disappearing. Treat claims about a broad decline cautiously, and make the decision project by project: compare software needs, interfaces, configured cost, power, included memory and storage, and the support ecosystem.
