Some are, but dishwasher safety depends on the exact bottle and its components. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the bottle, lid, straw, seals and filter before washing; don’t assume that plastic construction—or another model’s care advice—means yours is dishwasher safe.
How to tell whether your bottle is dishwasher safe
Look for care symbols or instructions on the bottle, packaging or manual, then check the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model. A bottle body and its lid, straw, seals or filter may have different cleaning requirements. If the maker does not clearly permit dishwasher cleaning, hand wash it rather than guessing.

How to clean and dry the bottle and its parts
- Identify the model. Check the bottle, packaging, care symbols or manual, then confirm the directions on the manufacturer’s official support page.
- Separate parts as directed. Check care instructions for the lid, straw, mouthpiece, seals and any filter. Remove a filter before dishwashing if the maker instructs you to do so.
- Use the dishwasher only when permitted. Follow the specified rack and placement. Where the manufacturers cited above allow dishwasher cleaning, they specify the top rack and avoiding contact with the heating element.
- Hand wash when the instructions require it. For one Brita filtering-bottle variant, Brita directs users to wash the bottle, cap and straw by hand with mild dish soap and rinse them; it says not to put that bottle in the dishwasher. Check Brita’s instructions to determine which variant you have.
- Clean narrow or hard-to-reach areas. Poland’s Warsaw State Sanitary Inspection station recommends cleaning the bottle interior, lid, mouthpiece, seals and straw. Its guidance describes a bottle brush for the interior and a small tube brush for a straw. The public-health guidance was published on 30 August 2024 and credits Poland’s Chief Sanitary Inspectorate; the English summary here is not an official translated quote.
- Rinse, then dry fully before closing. Rinse all parts and let them dry open. Nalgene specifically advises air-drying its bottle with the cap removed.
Does BPA status tell you whether a bottle can go in the dishwasher?
No. BPA and dishwasher compatibility are separate questions. The U.S. FDA says BPA is used to make polycarbonate plastic and that resin code 7 can indicate a container may be made from BPA-containing plastic. Neither fact provides care instructions for an individual bottle. Purpose-built reusable bottles are different from single-use bottles
Advice about refilling a disposable bottle does not establish whether a reusable bottle is dishwasher safe. Health Canada does not recommend refilling old single-use bottles because reuse can pose a microbiological risk if they are not cleaned properly. It suggests using a wide-neck bottle that can be thoroughly washed with hot soapy water between uses.
