Yes—if you want action-heavy Resident Evil games and, especially, have someone to play with. Resident Evil 5 is the more focused starting point; Resident Evil 6 is the bigger, less even spectacle, with multiple campaigns and more tonal swings. Neither is the safest pick if you are specifically after slow-burn survival horror.

| Co-op | PlayStation lists one to two local players and up to four online players; online play requires PS Plus. | Campaign feel | The stronger recommendation if you want a relatively focused action adventure. | Multiple campaigns make it broader and more sprawling; expect variety and a less consistent ride. |
| Tone and action | Action-forward rather than a return to classic slow-burn horror. | Even more bombastic. A March 2026 PC Gamer revisit praises its co-op while criticizing chaotic set pieces, inconsistent QTEs, and its outsized action tone. PC Gamer |

Choose Resident Evil 5 if you want a more straightforward co-op adventure
Start with Resident Evil 5 if you and a friend want a relatively focused action campaign. Co-op is a central feature, and the PS4 edition bundles two story expansions alongside extra modes. That makes it the clearer recommendation for players who want a direct action-adventure experience without the larger sprawl of Resident Evil 6.

#1 Best Overall
- Adventure horror game from Capcom
Choose Resident Evil 6 if you want variety and excess
Resident Evil 6 is for players who want a larger, more bombastic action experience and are willing to accept unevenness. Capcom’s release announcement describes multiple campaigns and two-player split-screen or online co-op across each one. It also describes additional player-controlled allies in certain online battles, so those special battles should not be confused with the two-player campaign co-op.
That scale is part of the appeal, but the tone will not suit everyone. In a March 2026 revisit, PC Gamer contributor Robert Zak called it “one of disappointingly few full-blooded campaigns you can play splitscreen on PC.” That is one critic’s view, not a measure of general consensus; the same article also points to chaotic set pieces, QTE inconsistency, and an unusually large action tone as rough edges.
Rank #2
- Starting with four distinct, yet interwoven story threads, for either solo or co-op play, both offline and online, not only does Resident Evil 6 deliver both different perspectives and gameplay styles
- Ada Wong, Resident Evil's very own femme fatale, dives into a thrilling campaign of intrigue and infiltration, featuring unique missions, gameplay and weapons. Ada is available from the start
- The most expansive Resident Evil game to date- Experience the horror through four distinct yet intertwined campaigns
- Solo or co-op - Resident Evil 6 delivers both single and two player co-op gameplay either offline or online
- Includes all the available DLC content from Resident Evil 6: Siege Mode, Predator Mode, Survivor Mode, Onslaught Mode, The Mercenaries maps, ResidentEvil.net costumes
What if you’ll play alone—or want survival horror?
Both games support solo play, but neither is the obvious recommendation if your priority is the slower survival-horror feel associated with other Resident Evil entries. The official descriptions foreground action and co-op, while Resident Evil 6 adds multiple campaigns. If you are deciding between these two without a co-op partner, choose based on your appetite for action and scale rather than expecting either to deliver a classic slow-burn horror experience.
