Listed quantum pure plays remain early in commercialization and are operating at significant losses, according to the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) in its May 13, 2026 analysis. That makes the sector unusually speculative, but it does not mean every quantum-related company or every investor faces the same risk. Suitability depends on the business, its finances and commercial evidence, the price of its shares, and an investor’s ability to bear losses.
Why the risk is unusually high
Technical progress is not the same as a viable business
Quantum computing is a developing technology, and a technical milestone does not establish that a company can deliver reliable systems at scale, attract recurring customers, or earn a profit. ESMA describes the technology as being at an early maturity stage and says listed pure-play firms remain early in commercialization. It also notes that the ecosystem is expanding; that is evidence of activity, not proof that any particular company will become commercially successful.

Different technical approaches are designed for different kinds of problems. D-Wave describes its own offering as spanning annealing and gate-model technologies. That is the company’s characterization, not an independent assessment of commercial maturity, and it does not make the approaches interchangeable. Compare what a system can do now, how performance is demonstrated, and what remains necessary for reliable scale rather than treating a general claim of “quantum advantage” as a complete investment case.

There is limited precedent for estimating how quickly broad commercial deployment might arrive or what customers will pay for it. Quantinuum’s 2026 offering filing, as reflected in the available filing excerpt, says the lack of broad commercial deployment at scale limits reliable forecasts of adoption, pricing, customer budgets, usage, and long-term performance. Without established reference points, confident projections of future revenue or market share deserve particular scrutiny.

When reading company updates, distinguish recognized revenue from bookings, backlog, pilots, and technical demonstrations. These measures describe different stages of commercial activity. A pilot or announcement may be informative, but it is not the same evidence as repeat paid use or a production deployment—and none alone establishes profitability.
Losses and financing can dilute shareholders
Developing hardware, software, and services can require sustained spending before a business produces enough revenue to cover its costs. D-Wave Quantum Inc.’s fiscal-2025 Form 10-K reported a net loss of USD 355.1 million and net cash used in operating activities of USD 72.0 million for the year ended December 31, 2025. Its accumulated deficit was USD 982.0 million at that date. D-Wave also said it expected further operating losses and negative operating cash flow as it expanded commercial and research-and-development activity, and could not assure profitability. These are company-specific historical figures, not a sector average or a forecast for another issuer.

| D-Wave reported measure | Fiscal 2024 | Fiscal 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Net loss | USD 143.9 million | USD 355.1 million |
| Net cash used in operating activities | USD 42.6 million | USD 72.0 million |
| Accumulated deficit at year end | USD 626.9 million | USD 982.0 million |
All figures are from D-Wave’s fiscal-2025 Form 10-K and refer to the company and periods shown. Cash on hand is only one part of financial durability: compare it with operating cash use, debt and other commitments, and the company’s stated funding needs. If more capital is needed, a company may issue shares or other securities, potentially diluting existing shareholders.

ESMA reported that selected public quantum stocks experienced repeated valuation surges followed by corrections since late 2024. It attributed catalysts to expectations of external funding, technical milestones, and ambitious claims about potential economic impact. In late 2025, the combined market capitalization of four companies temporarily exceeded USD 65 billion, while weekly trading volume surpassed USD 70 billion. Those are historical market observations reported by ESMA in 2026—not current prices, a measure of company fundamentals, or a forecast of future returns.
For a stock, a promising technology is not enough to establish that the share price is reasonable. Consider current revenue and credible paths to future cash generation against the valuation being paid. Market excitement or a large estimate of the technology’s eventual market does not, by itself, show what a particular company can capture or when.
Does “most investors” mean everyone should avoid the sector?
No. The evidence supports caution, not a measured finding about the risk tolerance of a majority of investors or a universal rule to avoid every related company. Quantum exposure can come through pure-play firms, diversified technology companies, suppliers, and thematic funds. Their businesses and company-specific risks differ, and diversified holdings can change the weight placed on any one issuer. Diversification does not remove the technology theme’s uncertainty, valuation risk, or broader equity-market risk.
Rank #4
ESMA said in its May 13, 2026 analysis: “Notwithstanding heightened investor interest, these pure-play quantum firms remained at an early stage of commercialisation and continued to operate at significant losses.” That assessment is a strong reason to be wary if you depend on stable business performance or cannot absorb substantial losses; it is not a personalized recommendation.
Private startup funding figures provide context, but should not be mistaken for public-company revenue or stock performance. ESMA reported that generative AI startups raised approximately USD 25 billion in 2024—about 20 times quantum-computing startup investment—and approximately USD 35 billion in 2025—about eight times quantum investment. ESMA interpreted the comparison as evidence of stronger investor appetite for AI alongside strong growth in quantum startup funding. It does not predict which public stocks will succeed.

How to assess a quantum-related company
Use each issuer’s latest annual and quarterly filings, then test the investment case against evidence rather than the size of the promise. Rigetti’s fiscal-2025 10-K identifies factors such as performance, access, software, compatibility, price, financial resources, and personnel as competitive considerations. These are useful questions to investigate, not proof that one company is ahead of another.
- Identify the exposure. Establish whether the company is a pure play, a diversified technology business, or a supplier with quantum among several markets. Consider how much of its business and valuation actually depends on quantum.
- Understand the technical route. Determine what the system can do today and which tasks it is intended to address. Look for measured progress toward reliability and scale, not only ambitious road maps or headline milestones.
- Check the quality of commercial evidence. Separate recognized revenue from bookings and backlog; distinguish pilots from repeat customer use and production deployments. Look for evidence that customers receive value and return, rather than relying solely on announcements.
- Assess financial durability. Compare cash and investments with operating cash use, debt, commitments, and expected spending. Ask whether the company may need additional financing and what that could mean for existing shareholders.
- Test the competitive position. Examine performance, accessibility, software and applications, compatibility with classical workflows, pricing, partnerships, supplier or cloud dependence, talent, and financial resources. These areas matter because technical capability alone does not guarantee customers can adopt a product economically.
- Examine the price paid. Compare valuation with current business results and plausible scenarios for future growth. Do not treat market enthusiasm, addressable-market claims, or a technical breakthrough as substitutes for that analysis.
Can a quantum ETF make the exposure safer?
A fund can spread holdings across multiple companies, but it does not make the underlying theme low risk. ESMA said the first three EU-domiciled quantum-focused ETFs launched in 2025 and collectively held USD 0.6 billion in assets under management at the end of March 2026. It also said these thematic funds typically combine pure-play companies, larger technology firms, and enabling suppliers, while public-market vehicles focused on quantum remained relatively scarce. The AUM figure is historical, applies to those EU-domiciled funds, and is not an endorsement or a current total.
Before relying on a fund for diversification, inspect its holdings and weighting method. A thematic label alone does not reveal how much of the portfolio is exposed to early-stage pure plays, diversified companies, or suppliers—or how concentrated the fund may be.
Who may find these stocks too risky?
Quantum-related shares are a poor fit for an investor who needs near-term earnings visibility, cannot withstand sharp price moves, or would face financial hardship from a large loss. They may also be unsuitable when the investor cannot explain the company’s technical route, commercial evidence, funding position, and valuation in terms they understand. Those are risk-based considerations, not a claim that every company will fail or that every investor has the same circumstances.
The case for caution is strongest when a company’s valuation relies heavily on distant commercial potential, its cash use may force new financing, and meaningful recurring customer demand remains unproven. A careful review should begin with the issuer’s current filings and the investor’s capacity for loss, not a prediction about when quantum computing will transform an industry.
