Open-ear earbuds may let some outside sound reach you, but they do not guarantee you will hear traffic, people, or warnings. They can be a reasonable option for some runs if you keep audio low, stay visually alert, and pause playback when a situation needs your full attention. They do not make a busy road safe by themselves.
What “open-ear” does—and does not—mean
Open-ear describes how a headphone is worn, not a safety certification. Some designs leave the ear canal unsealed; bone-conduction models such as Shokz OpenRun send sound through the cheekbones rather than sitting inside the canal. Shokz markets OpenRun for sport and says the design can help users remain aware of their surroundings (Shokz OpenRun).

That potential advantage is conditional. Fit, playback volume, background noise, and attention all affect what a runner notices. A device that leaves the ear canal open cannot ensure that a car horn, cyclist, emergency vehicle, or spoken warning will be heard. The available sources do not establish independent comparative measurements showing how well different open-ear models transmit traffic or warning sounds while audio plays.

Headphones can make nearby activity harder to hear, and the risk is more consequential on roads with poor lighting, heavy traffic, or unfamiliar surroundings. Shokz’s runner guidance specifically cautions about these conditions (5 Safety Tips for Runners). If you need to hear continuously to judge traffic or navigate a hazardous area, pause the audio or run without headphones.

Keep listening volume and exposure in view
Open-ear headphones do not make loud listening harmless. The US National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) says sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss even after long exposure, while long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss. Risk depends on both loudness and exposure duration (NIDCD: Noise-Induced Hearing Loss; the accessed page does not show a publication date).
Those figures describe sound exposure, not a guaranteed safe volume setting on a particular pair of earbuds. The World Health Organization’s 2019 WHO-ITU standard gives reference modes of 80 dB for 40 hours per week for adults and 75 dB for 40 hours per week for children. These are standard reference modes for personal audio devices, not a claim that every open-ear product operates at those levels (WHO-ITU safe-listening standard).

As practical safeguards, Shokz tells OpenFit users to control volume outdoors so they can hear their surroundings, including traffic signals and passersby (Shokz OpenFit). WHO’s standard recommends features such as sound-dose tracking, listening profiles, and volume-limiting options. Use those controls if your device offers them, and do not turn audio up to compete with road noise.

- Assess the route. If it has heavy traffic, poor lighting, unfamiliar crossings, or places where you must hear continuously, choose a quieter route or leave audio off.
- Set a conservative volume. Start low enough that nearby sounds remain perceptible. Reduce it further or pause when conditions become noisy or demanding.
- Check fit and controls. Make sure the earbuds stay secure during your activity and that you can quickly lower the volume or pause playback without losing visual awareness.
- Follow local rules. Headphone laws vary by jurisdiction; check the rules where you run rather than assuming an open-ear design is exempt.
What to know about choosing a model
Shokz OpenRun is one example of a running-oriented bone-conduction headphone, but its design and intended use do not prove it is suitable for every runner or safer than other models. There is no verified model-by-model evidence here to rank products by traffic audibility. Consider whether a model leaves the ear canal open, stays stable during your activity, and has usable volume and pause controls. Check current specifications and fit for your needs; do not rely on a product label alone as a safety measure.
