Are Milwaukee Compact Tools Powerful Enough for DIY Projects?

Milwaukee’s compact M18 drill/driver is specified for routine DIY drilling and fastening, but masonry and heavy fasteners call for different tool types. Here is how to choose.

Yes—for most routine household work. Milwaukee’s compact M18 brushless drill/driver (model 3601-20) is specified at 550 in-lb of torque and up to 1,700 RPM, which is a credible specification for furniture assembly, shelving, cabinetry, pilot holes, and ordinary screw driving. Its 5.7-inch length is useful in tight spaces and overhead.

That answer has limits. A compact drill/driver is not automatically the right tool for concrete, repeated large holes, or long, heavy fasteners. Choose among a drill/driver, hammer drill, and impact driver according to the material, hole or fastener size, workload, and battery system you already own. The figures below are Milwaukee manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests.

What “powerful enough” means for DIY

DIY jobs demand different kinds of power. Torque is the twisting force used to drive a screw or turn a drill bit. Speed, expressed in revolutions per minute (RPM), affects how quickly a bit cuts and how smoothly a fastener starts. A chuck must hold the bit securely, while the tool’s size and weight determine whether you can control it in a cabinet, between joists, or above your head.

Milwaukee’s compact M18 brushless drill/driver has a published 550 in-lb torque rating and two speed ranges: 0–550 RPM and 0–1,700 RPM. Those numbers indicate a versatile general-purpose tool, not a promise that it will drill every diameter in every material. Bit type, material hardness, pilot-hole size, battery charge, clutch setting, and operator technique all affect the result.

Published specifications for the compact M18 options

Model Tool type Published size and weight Published output What is included or notable
3601-20 M18 compact brushless drill/driver 5.7 inches long; 2.3 pounds without battery 550 in-lb torque; 0–550 / 0–1,700 RPM All-metal gear case, 1/2-inch metal chuck, overload protection; bare tool
3601-22CT M18 compact brushless drill/driver kit 3.2 pounds with battery Uses the 3601-20 drill/driver specification Two CP2.0 batteries, M18/M12 multi-voltage charger, contractor bag
3602-22CT M18 compact brushless hammer drill kit 5.8 inches long; 3.2 pounds with battery 550 in-lb torque; up to 1,700 RPM Hammer-drilling function; Milwaukee identifies concrete drilling among its applications
3693-22CX M18 compact combo Impact driver: 4.4 inches long and 2.1 inches wide Impact driver rated at 1,700 in-lb peak torque Includes a hammer drill and a three-speed impact driver

Weight figures are not interchangeable: the 3601-20’s 2.3 pounds excludes a battery, while the kit and hammer-drill figures include one. The impact driver’s 1,700 in-lb figure is a peak manufacturer rating, not an independently measured working torque.

Which DIY projects the compact drill/driver suits

Furniture and flat-pack assembly

The 3601-20 is well matched to assembling furniture, installing drawer slides, attaching hinges, and tightening ordinary wood or machine screws. Use the clutch at a low setting first, then increase it only when the fastener needs more force. The 1,700 RPM range is useful for drilling pilot holes; the slower 550 RPM range gives better control when starting a screw or using a larger bit.

Shelves, curtain hardware, and wall fixtures

For wood studs, plywood, and many plastic or metal fixtures, the compact length helps you keep the drill square to the surface. A 1/2-inch chuck accepts a broad range of common drill bits and driver accessories. Select the bit for the wall material and use a detector or other appropriate method to avoid hidden wiring and plumbing. The drill’s published specifications support this category of light-to-moderate work, but they do not establish a safe anchor or load rating for a shelf; the wall structure and fastening system determine that.

Cabinetry and finish work

Compact dimensions are particularly valuable inside cabinets, where a full-size tool can strike the side panel or force your wrist into an awkward angle. Set the clutch conservatively, clamp or support the work, and drill a pilot hole sized for the screw. Brushless construction, an all-metal gear case, and overload protection are design features intended for a broad range of drilling and fastening applications; they are not an independent durability test.

Household repairs

Replacing hardware, repairing a gate, installing trim, or drilling through normal lumber falls within the ordinary drilling and fastening uses Milwaukee lists for this model. Keep a sharp bit in the chuck and avoid leaning your entire body weight on the tool. If the motor repeatedly stops under modest load, let it cool and check the bit, clutch, material, and battery before assuming the tool lacks power.

When a hammer drill is the better choice

Concrete, brick, block, and other masonry require an impact action in addition to rotation. For that work, compare the compact M18 hammer drill rather than the standard drill/driver. Milwaukee’s 3602-22CT is listed at 5.8 inches long, 3.2 pounds with battery, 550 in-lb of torque, and up to 1,700 RPM, with concrete drilling identified among its applications.

Those specifications make the hammer-drill category relevant, but they do not define a universal hole-size limit or a guaranteed drilling rate. Before starting, identify the masonry type, required diameter and depth, number of holes, and bit system. Occasional small anchor holes are a different workload from dozens of deep holes in reinforced concrete. For extensive masonry, compare the exact task with a more powerful or dedicated rotary-hammer class of tool rather than relying on the word “compact.”

When an impact driver is worth adding

An impact driver is specialized for repeated fastening. Its hex interface and pulsing impact mechanism can handle long or numerous fasteners with less tendency to cam out than a conventional drill, provided the bit and technique are correct. Milwaukee’s 3693-22CX compact combo pairs a hammer drill with a three-speed impact driver. The driver is listed at 4.4 inches long, 2.1 inches wide, and 1,700 in-lb peak torque.

Choose the combo when your projects combine masonry drilling with deck screws, structural screws, lag-style fasteners, or production-style assembly. Use the drill/driver for controlled pilot holes and delicate screws; use the impact driver for compatible fasteners that need sustained driving force. The 1,700 in-lb figure is a manufacturer peak rating, so it should not be treated as a direct, laboratory comparison with the drill’s 550 in-lb rating.

Large holes or prolonged demanding work Compare a higher-capacity model for the exact job “Compact” specifications alone do not establish sustained performance No independent runtime or load test is documented here

Battery, kit, and ownership decisions

Bare tool versus complete kit

The 3601-20 is a bare tool. It does not supply a battery or charger, so it only makes financial sense as a first purchase if you budget for those items separately or already own compatible M18 equipment. The 3601-22CT kit lists two CP2.0 batteries, an M18/M12 multi-voltage charger, and a contractor bag; Milwaukee lists the kit at 3.2 pounds with battery.

Do not compare a bare-tool price with a kit price as though they were equivalent packages. Count the batteries, charger, case or bag, and any accessories you actually need. A second battery can let you work while the first charges, but the cited product information does not provide runtime figures, charge-time tests, or a guaranteed number of holes or screws per charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What M18 compatibility means

The 3601-20 is part of Milwaukee’s M18 battery system. Owning M18 batteries and a charger can make the bare tool more practical, while a new user should price the complete system. Battery capacity, temperature, age, and the load all affect real-world endurance.

M12 versus M18

Milwaukee’s overview shows current M12 and M18 combo-kit families, but the official material reviewed for this article does not provide directly comparable, model-by-model output figures. It is therefore not sound to claim that every M18 tool is more powerful than every M12 tool, or to rank the platforms in the abstract. Compare the exact model, tool type, battery configuration, dimensions, and stated ratings for your job.

How to choose the right compact tool for a project

  1. Identify the material. Separate wood, plastic, metal, drywall, brick, block, and concrete. Masonry is the clearest signal that a hammer-drill function may be needed.
  2. Measure the hole or fastener. Note diameter, depth, screw length, head style, and quantity. A few small pilot holes impose a very different load from repeated large holes.
  3. Choose the tool category. Use a drill/driver for controlled drilling and general fastening, a hammer drill for rotary masonry work, and an impact driver for repeated heavy fastening.
  4. Check access and posture. Compare tool length and battery-attached weight. The 5.7-inch 3601-20 body and compact hammer-drill dimensions can help in cabinets or overhead, where balance matters as much as peak torque.
  5. Confirm the battery plan. Decide whether you already have M18 batteries, need the 3601-22CT kit, or require additional batteries for continuous work.
  6. Select the accessory. Use a bit rated for the material, a driver bit that matches the fastener, and a masonry bit for masonry. A powerful motor cannot compensate for a dull or incorrect bit.
  7. Test on scrap or an inconspicuous area. Start with the slower speed and a low clutch setting, then adjust after checking the hole quality, screw seating, and surface damage.

Techniques that make a compact drill perform better

  • Mark the hole and use a small pilot bit before stepping up to a larger diameter in wood or metal.
  • Keep the bit aligned with the surface; side loading wastes torque and can damage the chuck or bit.
  • Use the low speed range for larger bits and high resistance, and the high range for small holes when control remains adequate.
  • Let the bit cut at its own rate instead of forcing it. Withdraw occasionally to clear chips, especially in deep wood or metal holes.
  • For screws, select the correct driver bit, maintain pressure along the screw axis, and reduce clutch or speed near final seating.
  • For masonry, use the hammer setting only with a suitable masonry bit and stop if the bit overheats, binds, or encounters reinforcement.
  • Keep vents clear and allow the tool to cool if overload protection activates repeatedly.

Limits, failure signs, and troubleshooting

The tool stalls or stops

A stall can result from a clutch setting that is too low, a dull bit, an overloaded hole size, a depleted battery, or excessive pressure. Remove the load, inspect the bit, charge or replace the battery, and retry at the appropriate speed. If overload protection repeatedly interrupts normal work after those checks, reassess whether the job exceeds a compact tool’s intended workload.

The screw will not seat

Check that the driver bit matches the head, the clutch is not slipping, and the fastener is appropriate for the material. For long or numerous fasteners, move to an impact driver rather than continually increasing force on the drill/driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The hole is rough or wanders

Use a sharper, material-specific bit, mark the surface accurately, start slowly, and support the work. On masonry, verify that you are using a hammer drill and masonry bit; a standard drill/driver may spin without producing useful progress.

The tool feels too heavy overhead

Remember that the 3601-20’s 2.3-pound figure excludes the battery. Use the smallest suitable battery, take breaks, and reposition the work when possible. The kit’s listed 3.2-pound with-battery weight is a more realistic reference for handling.

What the specifications cannot tell you

The published pages do not provide independent runtime measurements, owner-attributed performance statistics, controlled drilling tests, or a model-by-model M12 comparison. They also do not establish universal maximum hole sizes, fastening limits, or performance in every concrete type. Treat torque and RPM as stated specifications that help compare tools of the same category, not as guarantees for a particular job.

Product listings, specifications, kit contents, and availability can change. Milwaukee’s pages cited for these models were captured in October 2026, so verify the current listing before purchase, especially if a battery, charger, or accessory is essential to your plan.

Bottom line for DIY buyers

The compact M18 3601-20 has enough published capability for the majority of ordinary household drilling and fastening: furniture, shelves, cabinets, pilot holes, hardware, and repairs. Its short body is a genuine advantage in confined or overhead locations. Select the 3602-22CT hammer drill when masonry is part of the job, and consider the 3693-22CX combo when repeated heavy fastening justifies an impact driver. For large holes or prolonged high-load work, match a higher-capacity tool to the measured workload rather than assuming any compact model will deliver professional-scale endurance.
