No—not automatically. On a Samsung Galaxy, “locked” can mean a message is protected from deletion, a conversation is end-to-end encrypted, or content is stored behind Secure Folder access controls. These are different protections. For encryption while a message is being sent, check which app and messaging protocol you’re using and, in Google Messages, look for its specific encryption indicator.
What “locked” can mean on a Galaxy
| What you see or use | What it protects | Does it prove encryption in transit? |
|---|---|---|
| “Lock message” in some versions of Samsung Messages | A legacy Samsung manual describes this as protecting a selected message from deletion unless the user also chooses to delete locked messages. Menus can vary by model and software version; see the Samsung manual. | No. The described function concerns deletion, not encryption. |
| Encryption lock in Google Messages | End-to-end encryption (E2EE) for eligible RCS messages. Google identifies a lock on the send button and beside the message timestamp as the indicator that E2EE is active. | Yes, for the message when that indicator is present. Google explains the indicator and eligibility. |
| Samsung Secure Folder | Access to apps and files placed in the separate protected area, secured with a PIN, password, pattern, or supported fingerprint. Samsung also documents an enhanced-encryption option. | No. Secure Folder is an access and storage feature, not proof that an ordinary SMS or RCS message was encrypted when sent. Samsung Secure Folder guidance. |
The legacy Samsung manual is a version-dependent reference, so check the exact menu on your phone rather than assuming every Samsung Messages version behaves the same way.

How to tell whether a Google Messages conversation is encrypted
- Check the app. Confirm that you’re using Google Messages, not Samsung Messages or another messaging app. App features and indicators are not interchangeable.
- Check the message type. In Google Messages, an “RCS message” label indicates RCS; “Text message” or an SMS/MMS label indicates carrier messaging. Google’s RCS security guidance distinguishes the types.
- Look for the E2EE lock. Check for the lock on the send button and beside the message timestamp. Do not infer encryption from a generic lock, message color, or the word “locked.”
- Check both participants and the connection. Google says its described E2EE support requires both people to use Google Messages with RCS turned on. Encrypted delivery also requires data or Wi-Fi.
Google states that E2EE is not available for SMS/MMS. If RCS is disabled or unavailable and a message is sent as SMS/MMS, that message is not end-to-end encrypted. RCS without E2EE may have transport-layer protection from Google, but TLS is not the same as E2EE: with end-to-end encryption, the message is protected between the participants’ devices rather than merely over a connection. See Google’s E2EE explanation and RCS security details.

Secure Folder protects access to stored content
Secure Folder can restrict access to apps and files placed inside it, but it does not switch on E2EE for messages sent through the phone’s ordinary messaging app. Samsung also notes that notifications may appear while Secure Folder is locked depending on settings. If your concern is someone seeing message previews, review Secure Folder’s notification settings as well as its access lock.

Samsung Messages availability depends on region and device
Samsung’s US support page says Samsung Messages is being discontinued in the US and recommends Google Messages, with an exception for users on Android 11 or lower. That notice is specific to the US; it should not be treated as a worldwide end-of-service date. Samsung says availability and timing can vary by device and operating system. Check the current notices for your region: Samsung’s US Messages page and Samsung’s Messages app support page.

In an announcement dated May 11, 2026, Google said E2EE RCS messaging between Android and iPhone users was beginning a beta rollout. Google specified iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages, and said availability would roll out over time to devices supporting RCS with E2EE enabled. This does not mean every cross-platform RCS conversation is encrypted. For a particular conversation, use Google Messages’ lock indicator to verify whether E2EE is active. Google’s May 11, 2026 announcement describes the rollout.
