Live Activities are worth considering when people leave an iOS app while waiting and reopen it just to check progress. A compact, changing status on the Lock Screen or another supported surface can answer that question without another app visit. If the information is not time-sensitive, cannot be reduced to a glance, or mainly keeps a brand visible, the case is much weaker.
That is the decision framework offered by Viktor Gordienko, Senior iOS Engineer at inDrive, in an interview published by Dataconomy on October 2, 2026. Apple’s WWDC26 session, “Live Activities essentials”, also shows why this is a product and engineering decision—not simply a widget to add.

When are Live Activities worth building?
Start with a recurring user behavior, not the novelty of the Lock Screen. Gordienko’s first question is: “Do users regularly leave the app while waiting for something, then reopen it just to check the latest status?” If the answer is yes, and a small dynamic summary can remove that friction, a Live Activity is worth testing against the existing experience.
The strongest fit is an active, time-based process whose status changes while the user is elsewhere. The activity should tell the user something useful now; it should not be a static badge or a promotional message competing for attention.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Good candidates share three traits
- The process is in progress. There is a meaningful start, changing state, and end.
- Users have a reason to check. They leave the app and return repeatedly to see what has changed.
- The key update fits a glance. The user can understand the current status without opening the app for context or controls.
Gordienko summarizes the broader trade-off this way: “Live Activities have evolved into a complex ecosystem tool with Dynamic Island, Lock Screen, watchOS and macOS support. However, not every app needs one.” The quote is his interview perspective, not an Apple requirement.
Which product scenarios benefit most?
Gordienko’s interview examples illustrate the pattern, rather than making a blanket recommendation for any product category. A delivery, ride, or driver-arrival update can be useful while a person waits away from the app. A sports score can work when a match is underway and the score is the information the user wants. A timer, live audio analysis, or an ongoing task can qualify if people need its changing state while doing something else.

He also mentions the running timer for BeReal’s two-minute posting window and status for an ongoing task in apps such as Perplexity. These are examples from the interview; they do not establish that a named app currently provides a particular Live Activity in every version or region.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen a Live Activity is a poor fit
- The information changes rarely or is not time-sensitive.
- The status is too detailed to understand in a glance and cannot be meaningfully summarized.
- The feature exists mainly to occupy Lock Screen space or promote the app.
- The user does not benefit from seeing the process while outside the app.
Attention is limited. In his own testing, Gordienko said the Lock Screen already felt crowded to him with three simultaneous activities. He also reported reaching eight concurrent activities before stopping his test. Those are his anecdotal observations, not published usability thresholds, platform limits, or evidence that users generally tolerate a particular number.

What extra work does implementation involve?
A Live Activity needs its displayed state to stay coherent as the underlying process changes. The Dataconomy interview highlights push-token generation and rotation, server-side APNs work to start, update, and end activities, coordination between local and remote state, race conditions between background events and pushes, and expiration planning for long-running sessions. That is a broader lifecycle than sending an ordinary notification or drawing a Home Screen widget.
Apple’s WWDC26 implementation overview describes a useful separation: define stable attributes with ActivityAttributes, put changing values in ContentState, and build presentations for the surfaces where the activity appears. Updates can come from ActivityKit locally or from remote push notifications. Apple also distinguishes device-specific push tokens from broadcast channels intended for large groups sharing the same activity.

Plan the lifecycle, not just the first screen
- Starting: Decide which event starts the activity and what static identifiers or context it needs.
- Updating: Determine whether local app events, remote pushes, or both own the changing state. Define how conflicting or out-of-order updates are handled.
- Ending and expiration: Identify the real completion or cancellation event, and what should happen if an update is delayed or never arrives.
- Tokens and delivery: Account for token lifecycle and APNs server flows if remote updates are required.
- Frequency and payload: Validate current platform limits and the update cadence for the iOS versions you support. Gordienko’s interview reports an ActivityKit payload cap of 4 KB, activity duration of up to eight hours followed by up to four additional hours on the Lock Screen, animations limited to two seconds, and a possible battery effect from opting into frequent updates. Treat those figures as interview-reported constraints that teams should verify against Apple’s documentation for their target releases before relying on them.
Which surfaces should the design support?
Apple’s WWDC26 session identifies presentations on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, as well as StandBy, Apple Watch Smart Stack, the macOS menu bar, and CarPlay Dashboard. These are not interchangeable canvases: available space and context vary, so a layout that works in one place may become unreadable or unhelpful in another.

Teams targeting that behavior should validate it against the specific OS versions and device presentations they support; the session describes platform capability, not a guarantee that one view will fit every surface.

How should a team decide and measure success?
Before implementation, write down the user friction the activity is meant to solve and the smallest useful status it can show. Then compare the experience with the current app flow: does the user need fewer unnecessary check-ins while still knowing what is happening and completing the task?
- Confirm the behavior. Establish whether users actually leave and reopen the app to check an active process, rather than assuming that a visible feature will be wanted.
- Define the glanceable answer. Specify the changing state that helps users now, and what they must still open the app to do.
- Choose outcome measures. Track unnecessary app opens alongside task completion, relevant downstream actions such as review completion, and behavior toward the activity, including dismissal or opting out.
- Interpret engagement in context. Fewer opens can be a positive result when users get the status they need at a glance and still complete the task. A drop in opens alone does not establish success or failure.
These are suggested measures from Gordienko’s interview, not reported results. The interview does not provide an independent performance study, adoption rate, conversion lift, or quantified cost-benefit estimate, so teams need to evaluate their own user journey.
