Paying to remove Kindle lockscreen ads is worth it if sponsored screens bother you, you want your book cover on the sleeping screen, or you’d rather wake straight into reading. If you barely notice the ads—or a case hides the screen—the ad-supported option may be the better value. Amazon sets the removal price for each device, so compare the amount shown in your account with the convenience you expect to gain.
What Kindle lockscreen ads include
On ad-supported Kindle e-readers, Amazon says sponsored screensavers can appear while the device is asleep, and sponsored content can also appear on the Home screen. Amazon says personalized advertising helps it offer some device models at a subsidized price. See Amazon’s explanation of Kindle and Fire tablet ads.
Removing ads changes what you see around the reading experience; it does not improve the text, screen quality, or reading features. Readers who prefer an uncluttered device may also value having the current book cover displayed when the Kindle is asleep, though preferences and available screens can vary by device and settings.
Why readers are divided
The debate is largely about how noticeable the ads are and whether the small convenience is worth paying for. Yahoo Tech’s search excerpt summarizing a Mashable discussion reports that Tech Editor Tim Werth favors removing ads, while another staff voice disagrees. The excerpt does not establish a broader consensus. A public r/kindle thread likewise shows mixed individual opinions; its comments are anecdotes, not a representative poll.

- Reasons to remove them: sponsored screens feel out of place on a dedicated reading device; a book cover is a more appealing sleep screen; or avoiding an extra swipe when waking the Kindle makes the routine feel smoother.
- Reasons to keep them: you barely register the ads, find them easy to ignore, use a case that covers the screen, or would rather keep the money.
How to check the removal price
Amazon’s removal procedure shows the price for the specific Kindle before you confirm. It is a one-time payment, not a universal fee that applies to every model or account. Follow Amazon’s current instructions at Remove Ads from Your Kindle E-Reader or Fire Tablet:
- Open Manage Your Devices in your Amazon account.
- Select the Kindle you want to update.
- Find Special Offers and choose Remove offers.
- Review the price in the pop-up. If you continue, Amazon charges the account’s 1-Click payment method once.
You can stop before confirming if the displayed amount is more than the convenience is worth to you. Check the current Kindle listing as well as the device-specific removal price: purchase options and prices can vary by marketplace, model, and date.

A practical way to decide
Think about how you actually use the device, rather than treating “ad-free” as an automatic upgrade. Ask yourself:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Do I notice or resent the sponsored screen every time I wake the Kindle?
- Would I enjoy seeing my current book cover instead?
- Do I mind swiping past the screen before returning to my book?
- Could someone nearby see the lockscreen when I leave the device out?
- Is the one-time amount Amazon shows for my Kindle worth those benefits to me?
The Kindle Paperwhite illustrates why it is better not to rely on old price comparisons: WIRED’s 2024 review discussed an ad-supported standard model, an ad-free option, and a Signature Edition, but its quoted prices describe that review’s time, not today’s offers. Recent launch coverage also reflects a changing lineup. Check the offer available for your own model and marketplace rather than assuming a past price still applies.
