The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects growth for web developers and digital designers through 2035, while warning that AI and improving web tools may soften that growth. That broad U.S. outlook does not predict what will happen to frontend-only roles or to any individual developer.
What the current job outlook says—and what it doesn’t
The BLS projects employment for U.S. web developers and digital designers to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035. It also projects about 13,600 average annual openings across those combined occupations over that period. Openings include positions created by workers leaving or changing occupations, so they are not 13,600 new frontend jobs each year. Neither figure is a frontend-only forecast.

The BLS explicitly says that improving web-development tools and greater AI use may soften employment growth, increase productivity, and let some workers in other occupations take on basic web-development tasks. The figures therefore point to continued demand across a broad group of jobs, not a guarantee that demand for every kind of frontend work will grow.
For context, the BLS reports U.S. median annual wages in May 2025 of $92,650 for web developers and $104,000 for web and digital interface designers. These are occupational medians, not frontend-specific pay rates or forecasts. See the BLS outlook and occupational details.

Is frontend design safe from AI?
No part of frontend design is automatically safe from automation. A tool can generate a convincing first screen without establishing that the interface works for real users, meets accessibility criteria, behaves consistently across browsers, or fits into a maintained product.
The BLS describes web developers as people who create and maintain websites, with attention to performance and capacity. Its description of digital designers includes usability, functionality, compatibility, and testing. Those responsibilities extend beyond appearance, though the sources do not establish that humans must perform them or measure how reliably AI can do them.

Accessibility is one concrete part of the work: WCAG 2.2 sets out recommendations and testable success criteria organized around content being perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. Following a standard calls for evaluation against its criteria; a visually plausible draft alone does not demonstrate conformance. Read the W3C’s WCAG 2.2 Recommendation.

Which frontend tasks are most exposed?
The following distinctions are a practical way to think about exposure, not a measured ranking of tasks. Risk tends to rise when a task is repetitive, tightly specified, and easy to judge by its visible output. It becomes harder to reduce the job to code generation when the work depends on ambiguous needs, system constraints, and checking the result in use.
Rank #3
| Work dimension | More exposed pattern | More context-dependent pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Specification | Implementing a repeated layout from complete instructions | Clarifying incomplete requirements and translating user needs into interface behavior |
| Evaluation | Producing a visual draft or static screen | Testing interaction, usability, accessibility, and behavior across browsers and devices |
| Operational responsibility | Delivering a standalone output | Managing performance, capacity, integrations, and ongoing maintenance |
| Product context | Building an isolated mockup | Fitting work into an existing product, design system, and technical environment |
These are not separate professions: one assignment can include both sides. A generated draft may save time, while integrating and verifying it still requires understanding the surrounding product and constraints.
What one AI-built demo can—and cannot—show
In a September 30, 2026 DEV Community article, Erik Hanchett describes using an AI agent to build an interface-rich Winamp-style MP3 player and a simple 5K training coach. He presents them as personal demonstrations and argues that developers still need the knowledge and judgment to assess whether a result is good. The examples show one practitioner’s workflow; they are not a controlled benchmark, a representative survey, or evidence of AI’s effect on frontend employment or design quality.

That distinction matters when judging claims that AI can “build an app.” Producing a working-looking example demonstrates a capability in a particular setting. It does not, by itself, answer how much review, correction, accessibility evaluation, integration, or maintenance the result needs in a production product.
How frontend developers can respond
The practical response is to treat AI output as a faster starting point where it helps, while building and demonstrating the judgment needed to evaluate the finished interface. No skill guarantees job security, and the available sources do not quantify how much any one skill changes an individual’s prospects.
- Get comfortable turning clear requirements into repeatable interface work, and recognize when a request is too ambiguous to implement safely without clarification.
- Check interaction and usability rather than judging a result only by its screenshot.
- Evaluate accessibility against WCAG criteria instead of assuming that a polished layout is accessible.
- Test compatibility and performance in the context of the product, then account for maintenance and integration.
- Use AI-generated output selectively, and be able to explain what you accepted, changed, tested, or rejected.
The goal is not to avoid automation; it is to make sure the work includes the product understanding and verification that a quick draft cannot establish on its own.
