Executive communities may offer something conferences often cannot: recurring, confidential discussion of how AI is being deployed, governed, and measured. But the claim that they are replacing conferences is not established by the available evidence. A better reading is that AI decisions create a need for ongoing peer exchange alongside conferences, not instead of them.
Why AI decisions can call for ongoing peer exchange
AI has moved into corporate strategy, but leaders still face practical questions: how to deploy it at scale, measure value, manage risk, prepare the workforce, and build the expertise and culture needed to adopt it. The Conference Board’s January 2026 backgrounder reports that 43% of respondents to its 2026 C-Suite Outlook Survey named AI and technology as an investment priority. It also found that 30% of global CEOs—and 38% of US CEOs—identified AI as a leading negative business factor in 2026. These survey results describe executive priorities and concerns; they do not show that any particular learning format improves decisions.

Adoption remains uneven. In a 31 March 2026 release based on more than 250 HR leaders, The Conference Board reported that 60% of surveyed organizations were at an early AI maturity stage, primarily experimenting, while 11% reported more advanced integration. Robin Erickson, PhD, Head of Human Capital Research at The Conference Board, described the tension: “We’re at an inflection point for AI adoption. Use of the technology is happening very rapidly and there is massive investment behind it, yet the measurable impacts have yet to materialize,”
That gap between experimentation and integration gives executives a reason to compare experience with peers facing similar decisions. It does not, by itself, establish that a community is more effective than a conference.

What a recurring executive community can add
Peer support is already one route through which people learn to use AI. UK government research updated 27 July 2026 drew on 23 workshops involving around 150 organizations, 10 case studies, and a UK employer survey with 536 responses. It found that staff learn through trial and error, peer support, online videos, and prompts built into tools. The same summary cautions that informal learning can be uneven and risky: peer exchange can help people get started, but it should not stand alone as an organization’s approach to AI capability.
For executives, a recurring community can be designed to connect discussion with decisions rather than treat AI as a one-off topic. Its value depends on its programming and participants, not the membership label. Useful elements include:

- Continuity: repeated opportunities to revisit implementation as tools, policies, and evidence change.
- Relevant peers: participants who can compare experiences without assuming that every organization has the same sector, data, or risk profile.
- Room for candid discussion: a setting where leaders can examine unresolved implementation problems, subject to clear confidentiality expectations.
- Practical work: sessions tied to actual tasks and decisions, with follow-through between meetings rather than discussion alone.
- Responsible-AI coverage: attention to accountability, oversight, data quality, explainability, and legal risk as well as potential benefits.
These are decision criteria inferred from the documented learning and governance needs, not dimensions tested in a direct study of communities and conferences.

What conferences still do well
Conferences can concentrate expert content, expose attendees to a broad range of ideas, and create opportunities to meet people beyond a regular peer group. Stanford’s 2025 AI Index describes conferences as venues for researchers to present findings and network. It reports that attendance at selected AI research conferences rose nearly 21.7% from 2023 to 2024; NeurIPS drew almost 20,000 participants in 2024. These figures concern research conferences, not executive events, so they cannot establish executive conference trends. They do, however, offer no basis for claiming that conferences generally are disappearing.

A community and a conference can therefore serve different purposes: the conference can widen exposure to research and expertise, while recurring peer exchange can give leaders a place to work through how ideas apply in their own organizations. One format may complement the other. Whether that happens depends on the specific event or community.
How to choose a format for executive AI learning
There is no head-to-head evidence here showing which format produces better AI decisions. Use the following comparison as a practical checklist, not as a measured ranking:
Rank #4

| Question | Recurring executive community | Conference |
|---|---|---|
| How does learning continue? | Potential for repeated discussion and follow-up across meetings; confirm the actual schedule and between-session work. | Often concentrated around an event; check whether recordings, follow-up sessions, or other continued learning are included. |
| Who are the other participants? | May offer a more consistent peer group; assess how closely its members match the decisions and constraints you face. | Can bring a broader range of attendees and speakers; assess whether the agenda reaches your executive responsibilities. |
| Can sensitive implementation issues be discussed? | Potentially, if confidentiality rules are explicit and credible. | May be less suited to detailed, sensitive peer discussion; check the format of any closed sessions or roundtables. |
| What expert content is available? | Depends on the community’s speakers, research, publications, and programming. | Assess the agenda, speakers, and opportunities to engage with relevant experts. |
| Is learning tied to work? | Look for exercises and follow-through linked to actual tasks and decisions. | Look for practical sessions and a clear way to apply learning after the event. |
| Are governance and responsible use covered? | Check whether programming addresses oversight, accountability, risk, and workforce readiness. | Review the agenda for governance and responsible-AI content, not only new tools and use cases. |
| What is the time and travel burden? | Recurring meetings require time over an extended period; location and attendance expectations vary. | A concentrated event may require travel and time away from work; arrangements vary. |
| What is the total cost? | Check membership fees and any separate charges for events or services. | Check registration, travel, accommodation, and time away from work. |
What effective AI upskilling should include
Format matters less than whether learning is practical, current, and connected to responsible decisions. Skills England’s UK research recommends training linked to real tasks and decisions, combining technical skills with non-technical and responsible-AI capabilities. Its PRIMES framework says training should be practical, reachable, integrated, modular, expandable, and sustainable or kept up to date. For regulated sectors, it calls for stronger connections to safety, oversight, and accountability.
Capgemini Research Institute’s summary of research involving 500 CXOs, including 100 CEOs, reports that one in six CXOs actively uses AI in strategic decision-making and 41% of CEOs are testing AI. More than half of CXOs reported significant gains in cost, speed, foresight, and creativity; the summary also identifies legal risk, explainability, and data quality as concerns. The accessible summary does not state a publication date, so these figures should not be read as a dated trend. Capgemini recommends revisiting governance and accountability, assessing which decisions are ready for AI support, and building CXO confidence through targeted upskilling and mentoring.

For a community, conference, or internal learning program, those findings suggest checking whether participants leave better equipped to:
- identify a real decision or task where AI support may be appropriate;
- weigh expected value against data, legal, explainability, and operational risks;
- clarify who is accountable for oversight and outcomes; and
- update skills and practices as tools and organizational needs change.
So, are executive communities replacing conferences?
The evidence does not demonstrate a broad shift from executive conferences to communities, nor does it compare the two formats’ effects on decision quality. It does support a narrower conclusion: AI’s strategic and governance implications, combined with persistent capability gaps, give leaders reason to seek learning that continues beyond a single event. A well-designed executive community can provide recurring peer exchange; conferences remain useful for concentrated expert content and broader networking. For many leaders, the relevant choice is not one or the other, but whether each format fills a distinct need.
